This 966 hPa low with cold air mass (<540 ) is modeled by ACCESS to arrive early Tue. morning and linger with showers until the following Sat. Temps this stage 15C-17C, good chance of being lower when we get there.

It has potential to be a good wet down for pretty much all of Vic and if it comes off start to fill the void of dry months we have experienced.

Given the cold air it should also be one of the better snow falls too.

Had strong gusty wind last night roaring roaring around the house and shaking it, warmish morning at 15C now with scattered cloud.

Yeah, Petros ... looks like it'll roar in and make the temperatures of the days leading up seem like dim memories. Samboz, it will be interesting to see how much rain comes out of Tues/Wed - official forecasts only have a max total for my area for the two days of 9mm though better elsewhere.

Windy, mild here today.

Mild n widy day here too TB, ...sticking with the Thursday night looming, the latest GFS shows it just as cold and windy, but less wet:

.....but as Samboz would say "hang on Petros, ...its still early days yet!"

This mornings GFS upate shows circa 3 inches of rain up in Alexia's territory over next 7 days!

I reckon Maffra will accumulate 15-20mm on latest guidance.

Heaps of snow for Vic Alps is good news.

...continuing my mini Thursday night theme:

Like last night, GFS continues to be lighter on with rain, and tilts the wind more to the WSW than SW as portrayed in its "wetter" prediction in today's morning run - but note the indicated rain above is only 12 hours worth (not a full day's accumulation). Still, a very bleak night for most of Vic, heaps of snow, ......and all up, heaps of rain for Alexia in Corryong.

I saw that Snowy Hydro has the best snow depth since 2004 after last weekends blizzard, will be pushing much closer by this time next week????

23.8C here today! - I wonder if tomorrow will be warmer!

Still looking wet up at Corryong over the outlook.

....and Thursday night still looks blizzard-like to me, the westerly tilt to the incoming southern maritime air might make it less cold than it might have been for low lying Vic coastal areas, but up in the Alpine!!!!????

Would love to be back up at Corryong right now! My time to return there will come around soon enough. wink

A shame I was stuck in work in Box Hill today, but today was my warmest day (and night) so far this winter! It dipped to only 14.0°C (my hottest August night on record), and climbed to 22.2°C here in Belgrave, my first 20°C+ day since June 16th when we hit 20.0°C.

My previous record-high August minimum is 13.3°C on August 3rd, while my hottest winter night on record is 14.5°C on July 22nd 2016. My hottest winter day on record is 24.3°C on August 30th 2014.

Glorious mild to warm and mostly sunny, aside from a few light showers that swept through this morning as a result of the pre-frontal trough. Also light winds, and a beautiful sunrise and sunset too!

Hard to believe a week ago it was my coldest day for the year, with a max of only 9.9°C on August 7th, all the more considering my first 20°C+ day for the spring/summer season has arrived roughly a week ahead of schedule; usually it doesn't arrive until around August 21st. Happy that despite the looming cold blasts, the rapid annual springtime warm-up in preparation for summer has finally started!! smile

Currently around 13°C. Looking forward to the heavy rain and storm risk tomorrow, hoping for at least 15-25mm! grin

Today: cloudy morning, sunny afternoon. Warm 23C. Moderate winds from northerly 1/4. Official forecasts and WATL generally edging Wed/Thurs rainfall up for this area: 5 -10 or 11mm and then possible smatterings over the following days. This area is getting VERY dry.

Dooga ... reckon you have chance of some snow on Friday?

Can anyone explain the significance of the blue line on the thickness charts? Something to do with snow? Thanks.

'Tb' - yep we are a real chance to at least
See some in the air, usually once the snow
Line is 600mtr or below we start to see snow
Falling 😀

Hi macman

From what I understand the blue line
Represents 540 thickness, which is usually
Any precipitation falling down to about 1400mtrs
Will fall as snow.

Then once the thickness dives below that 540
Mark then the lower altitude the snow will fall.
Eg. 536thickness is about 1000-1100m snow line
532thickness is about 7-800m snow line
528 thickness is roughly 4-500m snow line
And so on

Periods of very light rain throughout the day but only edging on 1mm. Upper level forecasts to 12mm tonight and tomorrow morning. Deceptively warm under a cloudy sky; with variable sometimes moderate breeze.

After a mild 19C day here with steady NW'ly and early arvo showers (1.0mm), Baro has crashed to 996 hPa and it's looming dark, almost stormy, to our NW, showers have just started.

The SW'ly tilt to Thursday nights winds/rain looks to set in right through to the Friday morning commute in Melbourne, not as cold as it looked a day or two back:

.....but a classic set-up for traffic chaos for Melbournes roads, eg. South Eastern Freeway out near Wellington Road! :0

Wind gusty on/off all day, totally dry here round 0930, puddles in Maffra, make the Golf Course look better Petros grin

Temps - saw 19C, still not cold o/s @ 17C with Mt. Moornapa 18C @ midday.

Rain approaching on radar all day but never arriving, looked wetter in the Alpine area to our N but 3mm+ for Mt Wellington and Reeves Knob is nothing flash.

Licola has 10mm, not much run off for Glenmaggie Weir irrigators in that.

29mm on High Ridge might have a little run off for the Macalister River, and is S/E of Mt Buller which has 40mm+, good rain thru' that bit of high country.

Been light'ish rain for the last 1/2 hr here.

Hi Samboz,

"Rain approaching on radar all day but never arriving ..." I think there was some degree of virga in today's precip as there were times the radar showed rain over me but nothing falling. At the same time, I didn't see any visual evidence of virga.

Very true here also TB, radar showed the virga but nothing falling outside on a couple of occasions before Sale radar dropped out of service for a while.

Couple of weeks back not a thing on the radar but steady light rain at home.

Less than 0.5mm so far, better falls later tonight (ACCESS) but won't hold the breath waiting.

Grabbed a large square of lucerne near Sale, by 1015hrs I was the 7th one in.

Rain needed badly, about 2" since the end of April.

Don't doubt the low level snow f'cast dooga', 528 cold air on Fri a'noon and overnight into Sat.

Modest rainfall, again on ACCESS, could restrict snow depth do you think ?

Going to be COLD !

Samboz- yeah looks to dry out a fair bit
Going into Friday night/sat morning, but
We usually do fairly well in the south
Wester so Baw Baw should do well
Snow wise.

Hopefully it gives us up here plenty of
Snow flurries 😀😀
Maybe some higher parts around here
That are around 500m might get snow
Sticking?

6mm here in the 24hrs to 9am. Not much but the best fall since early June.

Some showers still evident in the area but seems to be clearing. Wind has been briefly quite gusty though dead calm atm.

Looking forward to some snow for you Dooga.

Windy o/night and this morning, 1.5mm...........should know by now as for many months the rain just misses this area and further East, the pic below is a good example of this -

Snow in the air once or twice, lack of cold
Snaps this winter.

Sprinkle clouds moving in from West bring isolated showers and clear far North Victorian border /South NSW.

Reached 12c of 8mm showers.

Had 5 wet days brings 49mm and only need another 9.6mm rain to bring average August of 58.6mm.

Nice shower round midday'ish, 4mm for thread now..... grin

Still calm, 14C.

Saw good rain when in Maffra/Sale midday.

Plenty of cold air still on ACCESS dooga', should do alright if some moistures about.

Haven't seen Mt Wellington all day, with 4mm there since 0900 can't expect huge white areas I'm guessing.

Terrific to hear of the better falls elsewhere in the State.

A squall is lashing rain on us here atm, kicking the baro up to 1001 hPa. I'd earlier tipped out another 3mm from last nights and todays showers ahead of the cold change proper, takes us to a handy 7mm for this event so far.

Its interesting to me that right now Vic is experiencing bands of squally showers, typical of a front, or embedded fronts......

Current Vic Radar:

.....yet the current MSLP chart shows us to be "just" in a general frisky westerly regime (which I would have presumed would have had isolated and scattered small scale rain/storm cells??):

Currently 6c and waiting for that icy looking
Cold air on the sat picture to push up over

Gusty showers atm.

Going by the radar for Bairnsdale, the temp has dropped suddenly and significantly - from 12C to 7C in an hour (but I'm not going outside to check!)

Certainly cooled down, with the gaps in the mini fronts coming thru' I can see stars in the S/W sky at the mo'.

Saw 14C when home round 3.30pm, almost calm here and 9C now.

If you can't work it out P. then my meagre knowledge has no hope of understanding it smile

Yep dooga', keen to see MtWell Saturday morning, might have a white coat by then if tonight doesn't do the job.

(Mt Buller - 163mm in last 3 or 4 days)

Hi, had another 20.5mm since last report so just over 40mm over the last 2 to 3 days. A couple of flakes and blobs and graupel mixed in with tail end of a shower pre 9am today. Over 5 degrees now and as usual with SW flow things drying up as they come over this location.

Righto d' - no pic didn't happen....lol.... grin

After starry clear skies last night went on to more frontish type showers with some wind.

7mm for thread by 0900 this morn which was cloudy and overcast, got to 11C by 1030.

Travelling thru' Maffra at 1100hrs, dropped to 6C and a cold rainy front pelting quite heavy from the S/W.

7C in Sale, showers and big front went thru' round 1415. Didn't have camera unfortunately but got home to another 5.5mm in the gauge since 0900.

Maffra looked MUCH wetter, 1/2" today wouldn't surprise (And a smiling groundsman from local Golf club smile )

The odd smaller shower in last few hrs, not a lot in them.

A brief clear period this morning of MtWellington environs showed enough of Trapyard Hill to approximate as good a snow event as any this year.

Hope to get a pic tomorrow AM, clouded in at the mo'.

Having now cracked 1/2" for the event it is the best rain for months..thanks Huey!

50mm dooga', excellent fall, very handy drop for those tanks grin

Max Sale 10C today....agree with that no probs based on obs while travelling.

Up round 15mm for the thread here, very nice.

My "other" Maffra rep. has reported 14mm today - the water lying on the ground certainly looked like that!

(Expect P to be having a "wet" BBQ at the Golf Club grin )

I got a maz of 13C (which would have been the value when I reset the thermo last evening.....).

Just poured out a MAGNIFICENT 19.5mm rain since last night, apparently most fell today, takes us to 26.5mm for this event - so far!

Very significant for N Gippsland, heaps of puddles on roadside from Loy Yang to Maffra road trip before.

Samboz, it'll be a "wet" degustation at the Tinny Pub!
.....and the rain is still tilting into Vic from the SW (meaning N Gippy is not yet sheltered by Tasmaninia) - a good chance for another 5mm or so more I reckon by this time tomorrow evening! smile smile

Poured out another 1.5mm from last evenings clearing showers so 28mm for this snowy event! smile

Cant believe Samboz hasnt posted a Mt Wellington snap by now (mind you its still snowing up there at times). An occasional misty glimpse from Royal Maffra revealed impressive and low snow up there - a photo tomorrow morning would look magic. Probable frost tonight which didnt look possible with the wind/clouds here at 4pm, but now 10C, calm and sky clearing - good night Irene for the Daffodils which have emerged around Maffra??

Lake Glenmaggie secured for filling.

Now to the outlook, that cut-off low looming may add a few more useful mm's for us in Victoria early next week?

Computer died late last night P, been messing round buying new laptop and getting programs running on it, a slow process and my brain processor is slower than ADSL on a school holiday morning.

Will reload I.C.E. for wide pan's, see what I can dig up shortly.

Redid maths for total this event, 13.5mm and extremely happy with that.

Better get the mower ready soon grin

Cool calm day, 8C here now.

Mt Useful looked to have the most snow I've ever seen from the Tinamba Rd. perspective this morning/evening. Like you Samboz Wellington was obscured, could see enough glimpses to know that it's impressive/low snow line on the way home from Melb. late arvo.

Any chance the next cut-off low can hold together enough for a follow up for us Vic's tomorrow/Tuesday???

Not according to WATL Petros. Must check ACCESS.

Can't get a IMGUR pic to work, no idea what's going on !

Some follow up would be handy.

edit..West and Central do OK P, scattered light stuff this end (maybe grin )

Alpine area adjacent to Mt Wellington which is on the very right border of the pic. Round 1550-1630M ASL. Taken y'day morning (19/8)

Very poor pic, largely unedited, poor clarity, apols.

Steady rain and 1.9c not even a hint of a wet blob. After big fat wet flakes Saturday morning at 3-4c. Vertical profile so important.

All that in the pic heads south ca, there is a small hydro elec at Glenmaggie Weir north of Heyfield (4MW installed 1994).

Keeps irrigators happy, see water going @ many farms lately after such a dry spell.

Light shower here this morn, 0.1mm, max 12C and calm, ACCESS got it right this time.

0.25mm here with a morning shower.

That picture is fine Samboz, too blurry from down here for anyone to take a quality photo, if we had a clear day, very impressive ("record") pictures would have been snapped by many in N Gippy today, such is the extend of quantity and low level of snow that up there atm.
