Hello Again Friends:

According to the weather records for Mena that I keep up with, here is a list--since 1990--of the instances where the avg. max. for January was higher than the avg. max. for February:

2006:
Avg. Jan. Max.: 58.4F/14.6C
Avg. Feb. Max.: 52.0F/11.1C

2004:
Avg. Jan. Max.: 50.2F/10.1C
Avg. Feb. Max.: 48.8F/9.3C

2002:
Avg. Jan. Max.: 52.7F/11.5C
Avg. Feb. Max.: 51.8F/11.0C

1998:
Avg. Jan. Max.: 52.9F/11.6C (data for 30 Days)
Avg. Feb. Max.: 51.3F/10.7C

So, as you can see, such instances don't happen that frequently here. We are supposed the have tops into the 50sF/10C+ for the last 2 days this month, so February may just barely be warmer on average than January was.

Cheers~~~Wet Snow

Folks:
(Add to above post):
After further calculations, we'd have to have a max. of 66.5F/19.1C on both the last 2 days of February for February to have a higher avg. max. than January; so this will be another instance of a warmer average January than February--the 5th such time since 1990.

Greetings Again Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
Feb..21..56F/13.3C..39F/3.8C...1.15"/29.2mm
.....22..39F/3.8C...31F/-0.5C..---
.....23..40F/4.4C...27F/-2.7C..---
.....24..43F/6.1C...23F/-5C....---
.....25..47F/8.3C...20F/-6.6C..---
.....26..39F/3.8C...32F/0C.....(0.20"/5mm)
.....27..54F/12.2C..27F/-2.7C..---

This week featured warmth at the beginning and end with a cool stretch in the middle. Rain on 21st was courtesy of a Pacific cold front; very cloudy on the 23rd as a dry Canadian cold front passed and a southerly-tracking Low was to our south (rain was well south of me). Another Pacific cold front gave a nice 2"/5CM of snowfall--a period of sleet [frozen raindrops] beforehand--on the 26th (precipitation total is equivalent of melted snow). The snow-area was somewhat localized as areas not far to the north copped no snow at all. The snow was virtually all melted by the warmth of the next day. The 27th felt especially warm as there was no wind and very low humidities, with stronger sunshine. Overall Low-abt. 11:40PM-listed for the 21st; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:53PM-listed for the 22nd; Overall High-12:01AM listed for the 26th. Most of the snow fell with the temperature steady near 32F/0C. So, we have had 3 snows (separate accumulating snow events) this MONTH, which doesn't happen here that often; we don't even have 3 snow events in most YEARS here.
Upcoming forecast calls for shower chances beginning and ending the week with maximums in the 50sF/10-15C and minimums in the 30sF/1-4C.

Wishing ALL A Marvelous Week~~~Wet Snow

Hey Folks:

Well, I just stepped outside for a bit (now 8:14PM Friday and 47F/8.3C) and heard the Spring Peepers (Northern Spring Peepers---Pseudacris crucifer crucifer) in the nearby woods, so it seems like Springtime is rapidly approaching (Spring arrives in the NH on the 20th). Looks like we've a good chance for thundershowetrs/storms coming up on Monday. I think the top today (after a 30F/-1.1C start) was in the mid-60sF/~17-18C; felt really good outside and I didn't even wear a jacket all day. The tops may even get a tad warmer the next few days and it looks like the minimums will be above freezing for a number of days to come. There are already some jonquils blooming and there are some buds on trees in town, I see more green grass patches in the yard--so it won't be long now.

Bring on Spring~~~Wet Snow
P.S. I really can't wait until Daylight Savings Time starts, which will be on March 14th (for today--March 5th--the sunrise was at 6:41AM with a 6:16PM sunset; on March 14th, the sunrise will be 7:29AM with a sunset of 7:24PM---YAY!)

Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW.........RAIN

......5..66F/18.8C..30F/-1.1C...---
......6..66F/18.8C..35F/1.6C....---

This week featured a brief cold-snap followed by pleasantly warming temperatures. Low humidities, light winds and strong sunshine made for some fairly large temperatures spreads the last few days of the week. Light sprinkles on the 1st were courtesy of yet another Low-pressure to our south; as the Low was departing, we had a brief period of Snow Flurries [small snowflakes] in the late AM hours of the 2nd. Otherwise, the days were pleasant & warm (making me feel even more lazy...LOL...), and I'm even hearing the Spring Peepers in the nearby woods on some nights. Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:27PM-listed for the 2nd [the forecasters really missed it: our forecast was for clearing skies and a maximum of 49F/9.4C, well--as is sometimes the case--the clouds persisted throughout the day and the Daytime Maximum was only 38F/3.3C--abt. 3:05PM]. Next Sunday--the 14th--is the start of Daylight Saving Time in the US (YAY!).
[I neglected to mention this in my February 2010 Summary: KENA precip. for February: 5.47"/138.9mm, KENA rain for year: 9.45"/240.0mm].
Upcoming forecast calls for continued warm tops (in the 60sF/16C+) with T-shower/storm chances for Monday; as the weather pattern becomes more active as we (in the NH) shift from Winter to Spring (on the 20th).

Wishing ALL a Super Week~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Another pleasant day today (Sun., now 3:07PM), some high overcast and the Mena Info Line has the temperature at 66F/18.8C. I've seen a few Youtube vids of the rain/hail storm that struck parts of Melbourne---Amazing footage! Makes me so glad that we don't get hail that often here, and what we do get is usually fairly small.

Hello Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
Mar...7..66F/18.8C..42F/5.5C...---
......8..61F/16.1C..44F/6.6C...0.40"/10.1mm

.....12..50F/10C....41F/5C.....---
.....13..50F/10C....38F/3.3C...---

This week featured some pre-Spring warmth with a cool-down at weeks' end. Rain was due to passage (early AM on the 9th) of a Pacific cold front--which was closely followed by another Pacific cold front which passed in the late-evening hours of the 10th. As I stated in an above post, my area could've potentially copped some very nasty weather (as E & NE parts of Arkansas did), but I barely copped any rain as the shower-areas were patchy in my area (but exploded just to the S & E of me). Low-pressure well to the N/NE of Arkansas circulated cloudiness and cool conditions over much of Arkansas (with chilly NE winds) on the 12th & 13th (reminders that we are still in the last days of Winter). Otherwise, the conditions were glorious and perfect for any outdoor activity. Blooms & buds on various trees/plants are really starting to appear by now. Overall Low-abt. 11:46PM-listed for the 9th; Overall Low-abt. 11:50PM-listed for the 13th. Yesterday [4PM in Australia is 12MIDNIGHT here in the US Central Time Zone]--Sunday--was the start of Daylight Savings Time for much of the US and sunset here was not far short of 7:30PM (YAY!). Forecast for the upcoming week calls for similar mild conditions with T-shower chances by the weekend (Spring in the NH arrives on Saturday).

Wishing ALL an Awesome Week~~~Wet Snow

Hello Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
Mar..14..62F/16.6C..38F/3.3C...---
.....15..66F/18.8C..42F/5.5C...---
.....16..59F/15C....38F/3.3C...---
.....17..52F/11.1C..38F/3.3C...---
.....18..64F/17.7C..31F/-0.5C..---
.....19..68F/20C....35F/1.6C...---
.....20..57F/13.8C..32F/0C.....0.80"/20.3mm

This week featured mostly warm and pleasant conditions with rain & snow at weeks' end. The precipitation (.80" rain and .90"/2.2CM snow) was due to Low-pressure forming along a Pacific cold front (vortex of Low is just south of me). Precipitation started as early PM rain, followed by a brief period of sleet [frozen raindrops] which changed to snow [around 9PM; still snowing lightly as of now [2:58PM Sunday, Mena Info Line has the temperature at 35F/1.6C]). Overall High-abt. 3:22AM (pre-frontal warm SW winds) and Overall Low-abt. 10:59PM-listed for the 20th (the temperature [Daytime High] was still 54F/12.2C around 8AM before the steady fall in temperatures upon frontal passage). Areas of N/NW Arkansas can expect fairly healthy snowtotals from this system; the back-edge (NW quadrant of circulation around the Low) is yet to cross my area, so I'll cop a bit more "white stuff" before the precipitation ends (my area will cop less snow as I'm fairly close to the somewhat drier vortex of the Low). Spring in the NH commenced on the 20th and signs of Spring have been evident for the last couple weeks. Virtually all local trees have good-sized buds on them and lawns are starting to be taken over by patches of green grass; spring flowers--jonquils and others--are blooming as well and our Forsythia bushes are almost in full bloom (vivid yellow blooms). It's nice to go all day without having to put on a jacket. Forecast for upcoming week calls for fairly warm tops with T-shower chances later in the week.

That's quite an impressive list, most of those would beat some of the severe cold snaps recorded here in the past.

The coldest 7 day period at Birmingham airport was between January 8-15 1982 with an avg max of -2.8C (26.9F) and an avg min of -14.0C (6.8F) Available records go back to 1973.

What's the warmest week on record during winter in Mena?

Also, I love the way the climate can change so rapidly in North America, going from 20C one day to snow the next. Makes the weather here tame by comparison.

Late-March Greetings Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
Mar..21..35F/1.6C...29F/-1.6C..0.20"/5mm
.....22..61F/16.1C..34F/1.1C...---
.....23..70F/21.1C..32F/0.0C...---
.....24..71F/21.6C..53F/11.6C...1.00"/25.4mm
.....25..54F/12.2C..46F/7.7C....0.45"/11.4mm
.....26..64F/17.7C..33F/0.5C....---
.....27..69F/20.5C..47F/8.3C....0.05"/1.2mm

This week featured more very variable early-Spring temperatures and conditions. The dry days featured lower humidity values which made for some good daily temperature spreads. The rain (plus .25"/0.6CM of snow) on the 21st was from the departing Pacific cold front of the previous day (I copped a total of 1.15"/2.9CM of snow from the event). The rest of the rain was due to yet more passages (early AM on the 25th and late-day PM on the 27th) of Pacific cold fronts. Otherwise, the days were very pleasant with ample sunshine. We really dodged one on the 27th as my area had the potential of seeing some severe T-storm cells. Thankfully--as is sometimes the case--the T-shower/storm line really wasn't that organized in my area (I barely copped any rain and only heard a few claps of thunder); the severe cells blew-up in areas not too far to my south and east (as the line got more organized and filled in better. I'll gladly only cop a small rainamount as long as the severe weather misses me). Very chilly on the 21st with the light rain and early AM snow. Had fairly gusty and strong pre-frontal SW winds on the 27th (that and the warmth contributed to the strong T-showers/storms in parts of E/N/NE Arkansas). Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:41PM-listed for the 25th; Overall Low-abt. 11:35PM-listed for the 27th. The back circulation of the low-pressure has my area of the US covered in clouds with drizzle and cooler temperatures with a chilly NE wind (now 3:24PM Sunday; after a 44F/6.6C start, there are now some peeks of sunshine with the temperature only around the 50F/10C-mark). Forecast for the upcoming week calls for unseasonably warm temperatures (possibly up to the upper-70sF/~25C by Wednesday) with a mostly dry week. Leaves will start to appear on the local trees fairly soon.

Wishing ALL a Perfect Week~~~Wet Snow
