Not unexpectedly, Access and GFS seem to have backed away from a major cold outbreak at the end of the week.

MetEye shows some snow for the Central Tablelands next Friday (18th) into early Saturday, although confined to the Oberon Plateau to the SW of Jenolan - areas over about 1,100 metres perhaps.

In fact, this event looks similar to last week's (August 7), but longer lasting. Heavy falls in the Alps (35-70cm over the next week) but little beyond.

There's still some decent potential showing up in the lower levels like 850mb temps being -3, but the upper cold pool at 500mb is slipping southwards so I suspect the whole change will fall apart unfortunately. I was quite sure this would be the one since all of southern Australia from Sydney to Perth and southwards was covered in sub 0 degree 850's and sub 30 degree 500's just a couple days ago. But it won't happen.

Hate to admit it but I told ya so. Highs are too anchored.

I think its still looking relatively cold this upcoming weekend, certainly colder than what we have been experiencing of late anyway.

The most concerning thing is the lack of rainfall being predicted, certainly not desperate here as yet but just head a few Ks away from the coast and its a different story all together!!

W.A gets the juicy fronts. What do we get. Blocking highs. In a little over 2 weeks we won't be able to talk about any winter systems as winter will be gone. The paltry number of threads started for upcoming weather events this winter says it all.

OK - starting to look good, the WxZone snow forecast has widespread snow on Saturday, pushing right up into the CT's. What're the thoughts re: a possible snow chase this weekend?

Forecast still looking good for CTs on Friday and Saturday, but Access-G is showing bugger all rain around then. GFS is very positive on precip, so will be interesting to see what wins out.
