So, Knot's holiday in Kiama was good in parts. My guess would be that the German Nurse more than compensated for the off chicken skewer.

Interesting blowhole video Kino - thanks for posting.

I drove up to the Hawkesbury district today. There was a large hazard reduction burn in the lower Blue Mountains, near Kurrajong Heights I think. The smoke was blowing Northwards away from densly populated areas. It generated a pyrocumulus cloud. Here's the view from Richmond, about 10-12km distant:

Here's a view of the burn earlier from the same spot

Yeah I agree Eddy. Pretty miserable and wind feels very cold. I hate days like this in winter.

True that and no wind now either for this area so it's just a nothing day. No sun, no wind, no rain, just absolutely nothing of any interest.

Grass is almost dead here btw!! Bit worrying for when Spring comes.

Griffith -4.5c this AM!!! Coldest morning temp on record - see how long that lasts - it'll be an "error" or "homogenised" or "removed" etc. Bet there's no media releases on it either. Thankfully WxZone have picked it up!

It looks like the westerly pattern is relaxing and turning more onshore over the next 2-3 weeks at least for us east of the divide, which is what the EC Monthly ENS has been saying, so the next few weeks should be wetter than it has been. West of the divide is a different story of course as onshore for us usually means drier weather for them(like in June). Hopefully a good soaking in there somewhere.

Yesterday morning's -4.5 at Griffith was the coldest on record at the current site for August, the old record being -3.3. It's not the coldest on record, that being -5.9 on 17/7/77. At the nearby CSIRO site (records 1915-89), the July and August records are -5.4 and -4.3 respectively.

So we have a new low temperature record for August, one of a number of low temperature records this Winter, at a site with records back to 1970, so its a significant one. "Warmist alarmists" don't say there'll be no more cold weather, no more cold records. We do however think that the fact that 'hot' records have been outnumbering 'cold' records by about 3-5 to 1 in recent decades is significant.

That -4.5 doesn't look particularly remarkable for the site. The BOM might check it, being a degree below the old monthly record, I don't know, they will follow their normal checking process. However, unless the equipment is malfunctioning, I do not believe that it would be 'removed', 'homogenised' or whatever. That would be extraordinarily unprofessional on the part of BOM staff. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

We are not going to get close to the forecast temp of 19c, so far top temp is 14.1c but its currently 13.3c no wind whatsoever.

A late maximum on the cards? probably not.

Bit of thinning to cloud westwards. Otherwise grey and cool as a cucumber. Ahh cloud. The spanner in the works of many a forecast. And the unknowable factor that renders any predictions of climate in a hundred years as nothing more than belief

Goulburn - there's one word for you.

And clearly I meant August, but nitpick if you must.

And it's a 55 year old record so that makes it 1962.

The low was -6.4C here on Sunday morning. Pretty cold, but not in record territory for this area by any means (e.g. there was a -10.1C at the Gurnang prison farm in Aug 1974). Even so, the ground was frozen, one dam was frozen over its entire surface and a barrel of water had ice 15mm thick on top. Frozen ground is great to walk around on - no mud to cake up your boots.

Not so cold last night due to cloud cover, but cold today under cloudy sky. Patches of unmelted snow remain from last Friday. Looking further ahead Access goes for easterlies, while GFS predicts a continuance of westerlies. Westerlies have been great for us, with around 80mm of rain so far this month.

Cheers Rob G! Sounds cold to me lol

And you're right re: models atm - they seem to be on a tipping point - some are swinging over to a more spring-like pattern while others want to keep throwing up colder air. The better news is for Central coastal & NE'ern NSW areas which *look* to be in for a substantial rainfall event, sadly missing out everywhere else. Waiting and seeing...

Awful cold and still afternoon, I was absolutely freezing despite there being no wind. It felt like 11 or 12 degrees but it's around 15 actually so I must be coming down with a fever. Had the heater on full warmth all the way back from Wollongong.
