Sun out here in western suburbs. Lots of streaky mid-level cloud with some bubbling low-level. Feels like things are stabilising. Need the sun to keep shining to have any chance of these storms later.

Just had to Google what "Foehn" means, I always thought it was a spelling mistake! Am I the only one that didn't know that? A hot southerly wind on the northern slopes of the Alps. Cheers

Plenty of thunder and lightning here south of Brisbane, raining lightly now and getting heavier. Seems similar to the storm we had this morning. We need the rain, it's quite dry here

So annoying that Mt Stapylton radar is down for maintenance for a month, the Marburg radar is useless after watching the Doppler images for so long.

Wow what a supercell pushing through NE NSW on the triple point! Byron about to get smashed. Didn't even notice until Ken posted the warning.

Good heavy rain, masses of pea size hail, fangs galore.
Spring storm arrived a little early

Lovley solid storm here at nerang. Been raining for about 20mins now and got plenty of CG's and some 5mm pea hail as the core passed over with some solid rain enough to over flow gutters. Just a great way to end the day.

Large hail from the NE NSW supercell. Video of golf ball sized and unofficial reports of tennis ball sized on FB. The storm has just veered away from Byron and is about to move offshore.

Unfortunately I think our garden-variety storms have ruined any potential of activity with the southerly once it reaches SEQ. Still interested to see if anything fires up as the southerly moves through this evening and tonight though. My money's on a big offshore cell with spectacular lightning.

Driving through Chermside, Kedron, Everton Park and back to Bracken Ridge this arvo (around 15:00-16:00) had an awesome feel to it with very dark skies, plenty of CG's and low level sheet lightning and some heavy falls. Loved it.

Thunderstorms forecast to lash Gold Coast
Tanya Westthorp, Gold Coast Bulletin

THUNDERSTORMS have lashed the Gold Coast this afternoon dumping hail in hinterland suburbs and bringing trees down during a brief but intense storm.

Winds gusted up to 56km h at Coolangatta, lightning flickered across the skies and hinterland residents took video as hail was dumped in their backyards.

One Tallai house was damaged when strong winds brought down a tree.

Up to 8mm of rain fell.

EARLIER: THUNDERSTORMS are forecast to lash the Gold Coast across the next hour with heavy rain already hitting Burleigh.

Forecasters say storms have been spotted on the radar at Beaudesert and Murwillumbah and are tracking toward the Gold Coast and Tweed.

Rain is expected to be concentrated to Southport, Main Beach and directly east of Murwillumbah, arriving by about 5pm.

But heavier thunderstorms are also expected further south at Byron Bay.

It comes as forecasters earlier today warned of storms bringing small hail could lash the Gold Coast throughout today after a short, but intense storm caught parts of the city unaware early this morning.

Winds gusted up to 43kmh and rain pelted down for about 10 minutes along coastal suburbs, particularly Southport, around 7am before the storm quickly moved offshore.

About 2mm of rain fell.

But that’s not the end of the storms with Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott saying a low pressure system combined with a southerly wind change was creating instability across the region.

It is the perfect recipe for storms,” she said.

“We can expect more storms later this morning and this afternoon bringing damaging winds and potentially large amounts of small hail.

“It will all come down pretty quickly, it is classic spring storm conditions.”

Temperatures will hover around a balmy 25C today before the southerly wind change moves across at midnight, dropping temperatures to 22C tomorrow.

“It’ll be quite coolish for the next week or so,” Ms Westcott said.

There's been some spectacular large hail videos from this afternoon in NE NSW and here's one of them - reminds me of something you're more used to seeing in late spring rather than August:
