Hi all - sharp intense burst of cold air moving through Tassie will head north rapidly, bringing snow to CT's and Mid Northern Tablelands tomorrow and wintery conditions right across the eastern half of NSW.

Local hail is also possible with showers after lunch. Air behind the change will result in a very cold day Monday with temps 3-5c below average.

MetEye is on board, showing snow on the Central Tablelands at 1600 and 1900 tomorrow Sunday 26th. The snow seems to be East of the Divide, mostly above about 1,100 metres. The forecast says snow is 'possible' above 900 metres. Once again, the moisture isn't really there.

So we'll see how it goes.

MetEye upgraded overnight with flakes expected from lunchtime now through to 7 tonight. Rain expected along coast from 10am (though nothing on radar at all yet and southerly still not pushing up coast).

Upgrade in forecast for coastal areas from 'small hail' to 'hail'.

winds starting to swing around to WSW & increase now. Still no sight of any precipitation. If that cold air pushes north, I think there's still chances of flakes around Robbo / Bowral.

ha ha that lasted long frown storms off south coast now; but still nothing on radar near us. Not feeling that confident as yet. The colder air seems to be wrapping though Vic back over SA.

If the air was that cold I'd have expected a more significant drop of temp than 0.4c?

No worries. All good.

I just noticed that in the South Coast district, snow is forecast to 600 metres today so definitely Brown Mountain, Pidgeon Hole etc will get flakes.

I was just checking a FB friend who lives in Berridale, he has posted some photos of a nice snow covered ground there!!

Anyway closer to home we had a low of 4.4c this morning, slowly warming up as the last of this high cloud clears.

Looking forward to this afternoon.

Wow, this is some serious cold for the eastern GDR, I think Braidwood will get some snow then and probably Nerriga too. Then as the day wears on, that rain band moving up the coast should get heavier. Could be similar to a proper southerly buster but there may be snow at Robertson and Kangaloon as Kino suggested earlier.

Yeh, I was thinking that too but there's no snow forecast for the Illawarra high ground. If it's 600 metres on the South Coast surely there could be snow in the places you've both mentioned?
It is forecast for Jenolan, Lithgow and Braidwood, but not Bowral, Katoomba or Orange.
Bit hit and miss.

How high are the Watagan's?

BTs are still in line for some snow above 1200 metres overnight into Monday, wouldn't be surprised if snow goes to 1000 metres!!

They don't get very high, I think about 400-500m ASL so I assume it was a tongue-in-cheek comment by Stormy.

Thanks for that link Stormy3, I can't believe there was so much widespread snow around there. I don't suppose you lived in the area in 1965?

Yeah I knew it was a tongue in cheek comment, I just generally wanted to know.

It will be interesting to see what Canberra's and Braidwood's temp drop to shortly.

Certainly will be interesting to see. Moruya is sitting on 10 degrees right now, so the cold air is still remaining largely intact as it moves north.

Defin watching temps to the south as I reckon there's a chance of a flake at Robbo and will head up there - timing is the issue I'm guessing around 4'ish

I reckon could be even about 3pm!! time will tell I suppose. Good luck with the chase.

Gee if you were down the snow this weekend and was coming home up the Hume and had the timing right you could possibly see snow for a fair portion of the trip!!

Yep - that blob just to NE of Canberra is what I'm keeping an eye on. I'm thinking of leaving at 3 (only 35mins or so to Robbo). I think flakes won't be in initial surge but defin in colder air behind it IF moisture comes in from south (which looking at radar suggests it will).

Yeah I'd say you're right.

Snowing at Carwoola to the east of Canberra and in the southern suburbs of Canberra.

PS: Only getting colder at Moruya with 8.8 now.

The Wattagans are located West of Lake Macquarie. The highest point is Mt Warrawolong (641m), about 35km West of Morriset. I think Mt Sugarloaf (412m) is at the Northern end of the range. Mt Yengo (668m) is further West near Putty (and pretty much inaccessible).

The changed passed through Ulladulla about 12:10PM. It dropped the temperature by about 5 degrees by 12:30. At 12:30 it was just reaching Point Perpendicular.

If it were Summer the change would be about 3 hours away.

Heads up anyone going to Robbo - Macquarie Pass heavy delays due to broken down bus and there's been an MVA out front of the Robbo Pie Shop with road closed smirk

Damn it, yes have to go up Jamberoo Pass then. It takes so much longer from here and it's an annoying road. Macquarie Pass on the other hand is fun.

Be aware Kangaloon currently only accessible via Robbo due to MVA ATM. May head there myself when the colder air arrives.

Yeah, unfortunately. I would've preferred to go Mac Pass and then turn right at Tourist Rd towards Bowral but oh well.

Indeed Homer. Feels surreal that it will be about 15 degrees colder up there than it is here now.

Nothing but r**n and a few icy splats. Even nothing at the top of the Gib right now with very light rain.

Torrential rain coming up Jamberoo pass though even with a big lightning flash! Saw a bit of hail accumulation near Robbo btw.

Made the trip to southern highlands. Saw small rice grain hail and some very isolated sleet. I got stuck near top of Mac pass, had to turn back and go Jamberoo. Close to going home unless that next line does something

I'm hoping it might be the goods for something. It produced snow in Goulburn so there's a chance. Especially around Burrawang or Kangaloon.

Caught the side of the band moving through. Nice light to marginally moderate rain for the last 10 minutes. No hail though frown

Temperature dropping like a stone.

Hope we get some more h2o. Feels like forever since the last drink.

Afternoon all ...its been a while. A quick report from the western side of the tablelands. A drive to the top of Mt Canobolas about an hour ago saw snow falling and a light settling. Orange Airport now about 2 deg which explains why I saw a few( very few)wet flakes with the last shower of rain a few minutes ago... Maybe that's it for us.
I'm glad to hear of the snow reports in the southern highlands... A late winter burst of excitement !

Good to hear from you WW. Good effort to get up the mount! That 2deg signals the arrival of the coldest air so far, but the moisture seems to be tailing off now. Temp on this side of town not as cold according to the nearby WS (4deg) and there's been no further pptn for a while. You must be nearer the mount to observe that little bit of snow?

Yep, and after my last post I saw that so went back outside again and the hail got much heavier.
As I type, it's still hailing as I can hear it hitting the skylights.
Little pockets are starting to build up in corners around the house.
The BOM were spot on with their forecast this morning. They just got the timing wrong.
The hail is very tiny. Baby pea sized. There is lots of it though.
My almost 200 metre elevation probably helps.

Hahaha same here, thought maybe it was you, guess we'll know next time. I did see your car parked at the pie shop.

And I really want to thank you for your report when I was starting to head home past Mittagong towards the Hume Hwy. My thoughts were that it wasn't going to snow again but glad I turned around grin

A bit disappointed with this cold change here at Stanhope Gardens, light rain and wind, no hail. However did see one flash over Hornsby way. Temperature dropped to 11.4c. Coldest air is over the coastal fringe around Robertson. Wollongong 7'c and Helensburgh 5'c at present, thanks to Weatherunderground PWS.
Could be a bit of sleet around the escarpment.
Hope some more colder air gets further inland.

Thinking about it now I think most of the precip observed was actually sleet, but there was one point where it was snow with big flakes. That was up Trig Station Lane btw.

That was EPIC!

I will post some video and photo's soon. But that was my first ever snow chase and nailed it! And thanks to WR for the Kangaloon tip! Triggs Station Lane Kangaloon, near the top is 850m ASL according to Google Earth. That's fairly impressive for only 35 mins from my place.

Sadly it didn't settle, but we got a good hour of fat wet flakes - first time ever seeing snow grin hopefully next time a bigger dump.

Decided to target the Roberston area today given the fast moving and direction of this cold pool.

Was going to leave at 3pm but when I saw Moruya's temp at midday, decided to go asap and left home at 130pm.

Arriving at 215pm (via Jamberoo Pass due to MVA on Macquarie Pass) first observed this:

This made me happy; showed plenty of moisture upstairs and very cold air coming.

Based at the Cheese Factory Cafe, quick check of the forum gave me a tip by WR of Kangaloon. Checking Google Earth Pro, noticed that there was an area of above 800m up til 850m. Left Cafe at 245pm and headed there.

With the car thermometer showing 1c and radar showing solid band of precip headed our way, I thought today just may be my day!

Then it started! And kept going. Hail and sleet at first, but definitely snow after that, with bag fat wet flakes.

The while time the temp swung between 0 and 3c. In fact it stayed 3c until the top of Macquarie Pass on the way home.

That was definitely the Peugeot 307 that was in front of me. poke

Nice accumulation on the car too, that never happened for me as snow or sleet would last a few mins and then stop or turn to rain briefly. Would've happened on the laneway but I only stayed for 5 mins.

Tell you what though, it was BLOODY cold!! There was lots of wind and it was unpleasant to be in so I sat in the car and watched with the window open (the side that the wind was not coming from of course!). I felt colder there than at Porters Retreat last weekend.

God that pic of the temp is giving my computer a hard time though!! Edit: Fixed!!

Yeah soz re: the temp pic; it's Imagur being annoying, it should be better now.

Yeah we saw you again and I wished I'd flashed and stopped lol. But my crew were hungry and I wasn't convinced there'd be much more left in the event and decided to refuel.

This event proves that you shouldn't always look at the models for guidance, like GFS today predicted 0 to -1 at 850mb over the Southern Highlands at 4pm which would be snow down to 1000m ish. In the end, it was absurd temps on the coast like 7C at Nowra that meant there had to be snow in the higher parts despite what models say. Current data is always better than the models.

If GFS comes off; could be another snow chase next weekend. Too far away just yet but I love those mobile blue bulges.

Absolutely. As soon as I saw that Moruya temp and the radar, I knew we had a chance. When Nowra tipped in at 8c, GAME ON.

Still moisture heading through the CT's.
Surely that would have flakes in it, or has the colder air passed?
8.8 here atm.
Cold outside, but toasty inside.

My brother sent me a message at 2pm saying it was snowing at his place in Canberra. The snow was falling but not settling. He's at about 665m ASL, to the NW of Gungahlin. It looks like snow was settling above about 720m ASL and especially above approx 780m (the photo is the hill range behind his place) -

GFS actually has the air getting even cooler tonight. Looks like theres some more moisture headed towards the illawarra so robertson might get another flakeage.

Anyways drove from shooters hill to goulburn this evening and pretty much snowed/sleeted all the way till around taralga. With some very light settling in some spots.

Glad to hear pretty much everybody had seen some sort of icey precipitation grin.

It's 0.9 at Mt Boyce, as cold as it's been all day, but there's been no measurable precipitation there for a while. Certainly cold enough for snow.

Most Sydney and Illawarra sites are between 8 and 10 under cloud, OH on 8.8, so there's cold air about. Just need some moisture in the right places.

EDIT: great picture Seabreeze. Interesting report Sidney.

Even though the change has arrived here, the cold air hasn't as yet, in fact the temp has risen by a degree since the arrival of the change.

Snow at Kangaloon about 820m ASL

Same as above but very overexposed because that seemed to show the snow better

Crappy video still but shows the snow falling the best on the Trig Stn Lane.

Yep will do, thanks for the tip. I think I'm busy on Sunday but will find a way up there if it's worth it. Probably won't be doing a 3hr slog to Shooters but if it's in the Highlands then it's not too far away.

Alas had to head from Bowral to Newcastle at 530, so no home snow chase for me. With Moss Vsle around 1.5 at 680m I'd think a few settling flakes in Robertson and Burrawang very likely given they are 100m higher.

We just had a short shower of very light snow, here, on the hill above Moss Vale. It lasted for around 5 minutes. Although it was only very light, is was quite visible with the help of the front lights of our home.

Damn wind again, average night but looks like it'll be quite a cold day. Ewwww.

Interesting overnight model runs now have switched - ACCESS interested in another cold outbreak next weekend while GFS and EC gone a bit warm. GFS still likes a cold surge but keeps it over the snowies. But still keeping an eye on it.

Cold and overcast here, but the satellite shows cloud to be coastal, generated in the Southerly airstream. Sydney's West looks clear. It also shows sinewy white cloud patches in the tablelands, likely valley fog. There's also a white patch South of Oberon that isn't moving, and a similar one near Trunkey Creek. Snow?

Here's a screen capture of the Satpic of our area as at 7:30 this morning, from 'Layers' (visible true colour). The cloud out to sea and hugging the coast is moving quickly Northwards in the SSW air stream. The sinewy patches on the tablelands would be vally fogs.

Satellite Picture NSW by Steve, on Flickr

The white patch South of Oberon and the fainter patch North of Trunkey Creek were not moving and were shrinking as the sun rose higher. The Trunkey Creek one was gone by 9:30. I suspect that these were snow that fell yesterday evening. Can anyone verify?

Thank you Eddy.

-------

Still chilly and overcast here, with the working week to come looking cool ahead of a warm weekend (850 temps 12-14 over Sydney next Sunday afternoon), then maybe another cold outbreak mid next week.

Here's something we've not seen much of from NAEFS lately - a cool signal over much of SE Australia for next week (issued 27/8): NAEFS

Better detail of the snow early this morning is captured by NASA's aqua/modis imagery:

Good cover around Black Springs/Mt David/Isabella and Burraga. Seems to thin out towards the east. Hardly anything near Oberon.

Where in the gong are you wave rider? The mrs always wants to move down there. Warmer in winter, cooler in summer she says.

Colder than penrith tonight!

I live in Dapto which is around 15km SW of Wollongong and a bit inland. We often get rather cold at night in winter but Penrith's coldest nights are colder than we get here. Frost is rather rare, only happening about once every winter.

Yep would be way cooler in summer. We are a fair bit warmer than the coast and a bit warmer than Albion Park but average max temps would only be in the high 20's. There's never long spells of extreme heat here like in Penrith.

It's warmer in winter in some ways. Our mornings warm up much quicker because we don't get fogs and the inversions just break up quicker here anyway. So it can be 18 degrees here in sunshine at 10am but still below 10 at Penrith with fog for example. But, it is also much windier (we get vicious westerlies here) so wind chill makes it feel much colder than Penrith when there's strong westerlies around.

Yeah happy bday Stormy.

Another below average morning here 2.3.

And crikey next week is looking cold! Still a deal away but we could see a dumpage right across the Tablelands.

Hello Stormy and happy birthday.

Overcast and chilly here, but fairly bright, so the cloud is thin. satpic shows cloud over the coast from Kiama to about Forster, including all of the Sydney Basin. It will probably clear by late morning.

I can't see your camera on my PC (Windows 10). I get the following masseage:

Even colder here, got down to 0.0C so no doubt would've been frost early. But we had no wind all night whereas Albion Park had a breeze for much of the night which probably prevented the temp dropping as far as it could have.

Our second coldest night of the year with the coldest being -0.4 on the 2nd July. Winter is still very much here. But the cherry blossoms say it's spring. They were lining streets of Mittagong in full bloom when I went there on Sunday.

Yeah Dapto is sure a cold hole grin but seriously I think it suffers more from the katabatic effect than Albion Park Rail (where the Airport actually is). I'd love them to put an AWS in Calder - I think it'd be far colder and wetter there. Actually, I wish they'd put a few more AWS around the Illawarra - it's pretty ordinary that we have 3 on water (Kiama, Port Kembla and Bellambi) and only 1 off the water (Albion Park) (maritime effects would 'water' down the colder mins (apologies for the pun it is early ha)).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STORMY!!! grin

I get the same error message as Steve posted.

Next week could be quite crazy according to GFS especially (it will surely back off though) However EC and Access also reckon we will have quite cold weather again at some point next week.

Could be interesting.

-4 here this morning too - full sun though now smile

Yes I agree that we get more katabatic effects than Albion Park because it's closer to the escarpment here, but not last night. Every time I went to check the temp, there was no wind at all. Yeah would be interesting to have a few more AWS's. Calderwood Valley would get some cracker cold mins.

PS The nights are quite often colder at Albion Park than here because it's lower there.
