Spring is finally here and you know what that means...storms!

Thought I'd get this thread started with this canola which is coming into peak in South Australia. Will try and make an effort to post once a week for spring, hopefully it's a good one.

And a recently processed image from early spring last year.

Yep, nice work Markus! smile

Was that storm part of the September outbreak that included several tornadoes?

Cheers guys! Would be awesome to have a regular thread going smile

Rsav - Nah this was a storm event about 3 weeks prior to the tornado outbreak. Did see a large funnel that day though!

Hell yeah STL! I'm pretty certain that would have been taken on the same day as my above image, some rather nice gusters around that day.

Blyth Plains shot from the foothills of the Clare Valley. The canola in the last week is really getting colourful in the ranges now, will have some more shots of it to come smile

Awesome stuff Eddy, I also saw the moon rise from a pretty cool spot but no camera unfortunately frown

Yes it is quite beautiful down here Waver Rider...I just wish our weather was interesting a little more often!

A high telephoto image from the other day. The range these turbines sit upon is about 6-700m asl, the clouds during cold events are sometimes low enough to obscure these ranges, as was the case this day at times. Got pretty lucky with the lighting making this moderate shower look quite awesome, you can see a turbine on the left through rain curtains.

Quite windy this day, over half the turbines had been deactivated.

Yesterday, I said to my wife Helen, "I'm thinking of putting this shot on the Weather Forum". Helen replied, "The picture tells the story of the depths of Winter." I then said, "I took this shot just after lunch today, this is a Spring image".

Snow falling on the ranges of the Murrumbidgee and Goodradigbee Rivers. Where the Northern spurs of the Australian Alps, the Southern Highlands and the Southwest Slopes collide ... known as the Bramina Wilderness. The App Temp on Mount Ginini, when I took the shot was -8.0C.

Around here one can only dream of the coming of Spring.

Skysthelimit,Eddy and Markus, thank you for your beautiful images.

Snow has fallen for the previous two days, with barely a break in the fall, on the Baldy Range, in the Northern Brindabella Ranges, NSW. Then at 10.30am this morning, 7th Sept, it stopped snowing.

Early morning 7th Sept, Mount Domain and Snowy Corner. Snowy Corner is the flat spur that runs off Mount Domain. Mount Gingera is on the far skyline. With the high winds at the moment, most of the snow has fallen off the tree canopies. There is a lot of snow below the trees. With more snow predicted for later today and this evening.

PS, The black smudge in the image above is a Wedge-tail Eagle. Flicker's loss of quality, compared to my originals is very disappointing, I'm finding.

That was one thing I liked about Canberra when I worked there, was waking up to those snow topped mountains.

Nice to see you out and about again Wassa and thanks for the pics. You reckon we get all the good weather but I'd swap you some for a flutter of snow. smile
Lovely beach shot again Eddy. Looks like we all had our eye on the full moon.
Thats a great view heading out ion that Blyth road Marcus. I got a real surprise the first time I drove my car on it. Beautiful sunset shot. I spotted the wind turbines and thought to myself how its getting harder to take a decent scenery shot without their intrusion. Hey perhaps you could try a high telephoto pic of the next full moon?
I've gotten into the habit of looking for a full moon rise/set. It often looks surreal and can be a challenge.
Yeah Wave Rider its a great place to live especially if you're a weather nerd.

Anyway my first pic shows the moon setting in the western sky. Taken from Hughes Gap looking out over Spencer Gulf. The second is the moonrise in the east some 11.5 hours later. The cloud cover ruined what might have been. frown

Nice stuff STL, I reckon you captured that moonrise well, it has character about the shot!! What was your focal length?
Here is another shot from last night, the westerly winds of late have made for some nice ripples on the sand, although the winds did make it hard to trace my tracks back to the car.

Regarding my moonrise shot I used my zoom @ 300. I think its nice to see at least 2 thirds of the actual moon. Cloud is often good but too much wrecks everything frown

When it snows here, it leaves as quickly as it falls. The predicted snow falls for the night of the 7/8th of Sept didn't happen. Overnight an unexpected warm minimum of 5.8C accompanied by rain and the snow was gone from the hills ... on all but the highest peaks, like Mount Bimberi and Gingera. If the roads are open, I'll do a walk in the mountains this coming Sunday and take my camera.

Mount Gingera mid afternoon, 8th Sept.

Eddie, someone told me that Smugmug is OK. I'm guessing their "OK" is possibly relative to their quality though. Any thoughts? I'll get Flickr sorted out, quickly, hopefully, and (again) hopefully lose that over-processed look, that I'm seeing. The image above looks small. I posted it, at 800 pixels high. Cheers Mate.

Thanks STL.

And WW I will check Smugmug out tonight and do a comparison to Flickr!

Anyway while I'm here, I may as well post a pic from last night. I went out to try and capture the Aurora and yep I was dreaming again, I will capture it one day!!
Anyway the moonrise and cloud made for some interesting skies, even managed to capture some crepuscular rays, although noise reduction killed most of the detail in this shot.

I'll chuck another option into the mix, Imgur. I've been using it for years and find it's a great embedding tool. It allows you to link uncompressed images at their original size so if you upload at 1024px you can essentially link uncompressed images. I usually upload at around 1400px wide and I've found its compression to sharpen and add noise to images but its not too bad.

Can't believe photobucket did that though, must have been financially desperate to literally hold images hostage. The fee is insanely ridiculous.

Envy the area you frequent Wassa, the cold doesn't seem to bother me as much as most but then I've never lived somewhere where it snows frequently so maybe after some time I'd get sick of it. Love that image with the light rain/snow falling in the distance.

Yeah I absolutely love that road! Lived in Blyth for a couple years and so have driven it hundreds of times now, I could never get sick of it. I do agree about the turbines, they make good subjects but they are becoming very widespread across the hills making their exclusion harder. Unfortunate consequence of progress I guess.

I don't think the cloud ruined the shot, I like how in the second one the cloud kinda parallels the ground.

Yep also went out last night and whilst it was going off in Tasmania I could see nothing but moonlight here. I've seen it in the past naked eye at this latitude but it was pitch black.

Some rainbow action from me, the week of frequent showers and near continuous cloud is over, time for some sunshine smile

You may notice the lack of colour in this rainbow...the drizzle was very fine and so it came out whiter like you'd see in a fogbow.

Wow this thread is two pages already and we're a week into spring!! Great photos guys, keep it up.

I will second Markus' comment on Imgur. I use it from time to time when I want to quickly upload an image and share it right away as you don't even have to sign in.

I mainly use Flickr though. I have noticed that a bit of quality gets lost though. Instagram really keeps the image quality, but you can't embed code to paste in forums etc. (at least I don't think)

My images have nothing on the other ones, but I thought I might share anyway. Last week on the escarpment above me:

The sunlight looks warm and inviting, but it was actually freezing cold. About 10 degrees with plenty of wind!

Sounds a bit like here Wassa. Snow is a rarity here so when it happens people generally go out of their way to see it before it disappears. Nothing this winter at all but every now and then it surprises us.
Keep trying for that elusive aurora shot Eddy. I see like me you take a consolation shot.
Marcus I sat in my car for an hour waiting for a rainbow. I had the scene all picked out but the clouds wouldn't part frown
Wave Rider I like that sheer drop in your first pic. Would love to see that waterfall in its entirety.

Ok my pics today are all of clouds. I 've always called them spaceship clouds for obvious reasons smile

A snowy Mount Murray, mid morning, on the Bimberi Range, from Baroomba Rocks, in the South of the ACT.

A beautiful spring morning. 6.0C, a cloudless sky and not even the slightest movement of the leaves. 10th Sept.

It is a rare day when there isn't a cold wind in the mountains of the Bimberi Wilderness at this time of year. Spring really starts about mid November here.

I think they're powerlines Eddy but not entirely sure. They had these weird ball things:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the waterfall pretty much in its entirety Skys. The wasn't that much water falling thanks to the dryness lately and the water is very windblown. Quite cool in its own way guess. smile Rubbish pic though.

Nice lenticulars STL and a nice snow capped mountain Wassa, 6c at what time of the morning? Looks mid to late morning?
WR, Rubbish nah, I will still look at it smile In fact I will look at any picture regardless!!

I will have quite a few pics to post of todays adventures, but I will do it in stages.

This pic was taken on the first lake of the Myall Lakes, I had no intentions of taking a pic of this lake as its quite accessible, but as I was driving past and had seen how still it was, I couldn't resist!!

The Bimberri Wilderness looks a bit too rugged, cold and uninviting for me to ever want to visit Wassa. At least until it warms up. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the waterfall shot Wave Rider. Those viewing platforms are sure handy things aren't they? Provided a whole busload of sight seeers don't all crowd on there at once.
Thanks for the pics Eddy. Is Boolambayte Lake usually that green or is that some sort of algal bloom?

I had a trip to Adelaide yesterday and stopped at Lochiel on the way home. This small town sits opposite Lake Bumbunga where salt has been mined for over a century. Water feeds into it through rainfall on the surrounding topography and the lake generally has pink coloration which is at odds with the surrounding countryside and can look quite spectacular at times. Situated on National Highway One its a popular photo stop for travellers. Some take things further and are compelled for some reason to wander out on the flats. As they sink in the mud they generally reconsider the wisdom of their decision. The group pictured spent a long time cleaning up. They also copped a rain shower before they made it back to shelter frown but hey they were happy smile

Thanks STL

No its normally clear and was on the day, although over the years it has been prone to blue-green algae. TBH I only see a little bit of green, I'm wondering if it was the polarizer I used or my poor editing skills, anyway I will rework it and see if I can get it out.

And great pics STL, judging by the tyre marks on the lake, how many cars get bogged??

Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated. It could be a number of things, like it might be time to go to Specsavers grin laugh
but then again it could be the sand that gives it that green/aqua colour, why I say that is if you go to Google earth it even shows green in the top lakes.

Myall Lakes

When I first looked at the picture I though "gee that water is green!". On further inspection and if you look beyond the shoreline you can tell it is just the sand causing the illusion that the water is green. I think I can make out some sort of weed bed a bit further out? Anyway just my 2 cents smile. Don't have much to say on the forums these days. I just come and appreciate the photos from everyone....and they are pretty damn awesome!

Here is a pic from the Singing Bridge looking south-east, Myall river sandbanks. Clear days and the lack of rainfall has made for some nice water clarity.

Thank you Eddy. I'm pleased that you like the image. I walked in the snow, my first walk in snow in many years. I took 554 images in three day, in the high country.

I think that the images posted on the Forum are some of the best images of Australia, that I could wish to see. I enjoy everyone's posts.

I'm with Flickr. I'm slowly working out what level of my processing style, Flickr can best reproduce. I still see slight fringing on the hard edges of some tree lines and skylines (from over processing?), that I wasn't seeing on Photobucket. I'll stay with Flickr for the moment. I think the look of my images is improving on Flickr.

I haven't tried Imgur that Markus uses ... yet. I probably should do a few comparisons of the same images between Imgur and Flickr, for my confidence.

Limited visibility, early morning, South West Slopes of New South Wales. I'm guessing the smoke is from both the burning-off of agricultural stubble and several inland bush fires.

Thanks for sharing your pics everyone. Wow Wassa thats a lot of photos you took. Glad to see you back in the thick of it. I'm currently trying Flickr too and I'm relatively happy so far. Still annoyed with Photobucket. I wonder what the washup is with them. Do they regret doing what they did?
These are a couple of early morning shots from near Laura, first up, and then Georgetown a few weeks back now. Gee we desperately need a good rain now. These warm windy days are really taking their toll frown

Skysthelimit it has been good to get back into the photography, after a bit of a break. The combinations of hues and values are very beautiful in your photographs.

I wonder if Eddy has ever taken a bad shot? ... only he would know.

Cirrocumulus clouds above Woomeragama ... pronounced Wu-mar-gu-ma apparently. Southwest Slopes of New South Wales.

Hazy bright light and Canola near Gooramada in Victoria, beside the mighty Murray River. There were wind gusts in the tree tops. The air was perfectly still at ground level. The sun was shining on the Canola. 95% of the sky was overcast and the whole scene was wrapped in a smokey atmosphere. It was a lovely day.

Thanks STL and WW.
It was a sunset indeed STL.
Nice pics too WW.
And Wassa, I wonder that question with yourself.
To be honest, I would love to say no, but in reality I take more bad shots than good ones. Thank god for the digital age hey!!

I received a Miops trigger for my birthday the other day, looking forward to using it, now we just need some storms??

Smoke and snow.

The snowy tabletop formation is called The Jaithmathangs (1852m) and to the right is Mount Feathertop (1922m), Victoria.

Eddy, I read a bit and watched a video about using the new trigger. So many potential uses for it, limited only to one's imagination.

So much for me posting once a week ha! Been out shooting A LOT lately so will chuck a few images in over the coming days.

Too many great images in here to mention but Eddy that rainbow composition is excellent, very cool.

Wild Wassa, how long does the Spring snow melt usually take, is it a rapid process?

I'll chuck this one up for now given it's sorta rare, Undulatus in the turbulent wake of storms on a strong cold front, over the central Flinders Ranges. I could only get glimpses of these clouds when the low cloud broke up so I was pretty lucky to get this shot. One of the more other-worldly skies I have seen.

Wow looks like an awesome beach to visit with or without your camera Eddy. Likewise I've enjoyed looking through your Flickr site. Very impressive array of pictures smile My grandson and I were checking out your night beach lightning shots smile

Hello and thank you Barb. I'm happy to share any pics with you! smile

Well it rained most of the day here today which is not ideal with harvest in full swing. Big let down for the storm chasers. We just can't take trick atm frown I did witness a decent storm over Port Pirie last night though.

Had some lovely cumulus skies over the preceding days smile

Nice pictures Eddy and Skytl.

Jacaranda season has another couple of weeks to go, with the greenery pushing through the purple. Here's a beautiful Jacaranda still in full bloom in a park in Windsor, with random shopping trolley:

Very nice Steve. Yeah they sure are pretty those Jacarandah trees. Crystal Brook in the mid north of SA has quite a few of them adorning its streets smile

Love the way the golden stubble shines in the sunlight immediately after the grain crop is harvested.

Wow we finally got a stormy day. Not only that but I hardly had to travel. In fact these pics were all taken within 15 kms from my home. These lightning active cells built up quickly and dumped a lot of rain. The first two pics show just one of the fires started by lightning. Harvest was in full swing but it will be some time now before a lot can resume. The town's grain bunkers were eerily quiet today compared to the previous week. I think the last pic is the cell that dropped hail on Gladstone as well as knocking out the power and knocking down a few trees frown
