Here comes the southerly - plenty of thick Cu developing over Saddleback right now, hoping we see some maritime moisture.

Can smell the showers to the south /south east now; with the change bringing an 8c jump in DP's in 10 mins! Showers forming on radar just se of Kiama, hopefully they'll push ashore. The change is very shallow though as can be seen on satpic - over the rages the winds are still dry sw'erlies.

31 for next Wednesday. Before I get too excited I will wait and see how much cloud there is on the day.

Yeah timing on this one will be crucial - very dry gusty nw'erlies though with it; huge fire danger. Then a savage cold change - Access likes a dump; GFS & EC like nada.

Ahh I see. Didn't know the Fairfax goofballs had a finger in the WZ pie. Some of the moderation decisions seem clearer now.

It did feel warmer than yesterday IMO but certainly didn't feel like 20.

Btw it is really windy AGAIN tonight.

It's almost been non stop since Sunday night, with the only breaks being yesterday morning for a few hours and half of Wednesday night.

Yeah and those showers got oh so close and then did their usual u-turn and headed to NZ. Oh well.

Yep, the westerly was just too strong for anything to make it ashore.

It's been such a lovely sunny week, what a shame the wind and cold has really been spoiling it. The wind probably wouldn't bother me as much if it wasn't cold.

Edit: Monday morning was cold so maybe the wind started on Monday and not Sunday night. Been so many days that I can't remember!

Same. I wouldn't mind it so much if it pee'd off at night either. Instead of it thrashing all night long.

True that too, in most places the wind dies down at night. But here it speeds up lol.

Yeah especially in the 12am to 3am time slot. Just when you're trying to get a nice deep sleep and then BANG!

I thought I heard thunder before! I was right - there's a little cell just off the coast.

I wouldn't be able to hear anything over the wind laugh

Looks like the wind has been worse up at Moss Vale so at least we're not there. smile

Yeah Bowral / Moss Vale have been copping it apparently. Even when it's warmer next week, it's still going to be windy with it. And then cold. Cold. Cold. Again.

I was out doing a little photography last night and I could see the odd flash way down south, a quick look at the radar and nothing on the Newcastle radar, but on the Wollongong radar I noticed that little cell. Its amazing sometimes to think how far you can see lightning, I estimate it to be just over 200Ks.

It really is amazing how far you can see lightning and cloud tops.

The distance to the visible horizon is approximately equal to:

D = 3.57 * sqrt (h).

Where D is the distance in kilometres and 'h' is the height of the observer in metres. See: Distance to Horizon.

It works the other way too - how far away can you see a cloud. On a clear night without intervening hills, mountains, buildings, etc, lightning at 5,000 metres would be visible for up to 250 km. At 3,000 metres, that would still be nearly 200km.

-------

The usual weather here: clear, sunny, get an electric shock when you touch door knobs. It's 17-19 across Sydney, not as windy as it's been but there's a bit of a bite in the breeze.

Sydney's had 1.4 mm of rain in the past 5 weeks.

Next Wednesday is shaping up to be the first tricky fire risk day of the season.
