Fairly hefty Hurricane. Be interesting to see the damage caused by Harvey. You would expect fairly decent building codes over there but I am guessing they probably are not that fantastic. Alot of the footage I saw it showed a decent amount of damage. Match stick houses. Australian/large part of Asian building standards are so much higher.

350mm of rain already fallen in Houston with another 400-500mm expected - this is about as bad as it gets

Hello Folks:

7:17PM Monday here & I've been watching the Weather Channel's continuing coverage of (now Tropical Storm) Harvey.
As of now, Houston has received 36"/914.4mm of rain, with more to come. The Brazos River at Richmond, TX (~25 miles/~40 kilometers SW of downtown Houston) is expected to crest at a record of 59FEET/17.9METERS--which would break their old crest record by almost 4FEET/almost 1.2METERS.
The footage is just heartbreaking. The reporting crew has had to constantly move to higher ground during their reporting; very nice & expensive homes in subdivisions are either under water or about to be. MULTITUDES of folks are being rescued by a number of different types of watercraft. My thoughts & prayers continue to be with those impacted. More of the heavier rainbands have moved East, into Western parts of Louisiana.
Both Hobby Airport & the International Airport in Houston are closed--and will be so for a few more days.

You may care to access the US Weather Channel, if possible in your area; as they have great in-depth reporting & coverage.
On your PC, Please see: http://www.weather.com

GFS still has another 700 mm to fall right over Houston.

Are there any good places to follow what's unfolding in Texas? The few stories on the news just make it look like another flood. Looking for some coverage that gives some technical detail and gives a real sense of the scale of the disaster.

There's been plenty of live coverage on youtube. Just search Hurricane Harvey live and pick one. CBS News Live & The Weather Channel's coverage are the two I've been watching.

Amazing to think Houston may get more rain than Mumbai did during their July 2005 flood, which was ~1100mm over 48 hrs (944mm in 24 hrs). Never thought of it happening in the U.S at least

Unreal, it seems like it just keeps wanting to rain in the south, as EC & GFS both have very heavy falls from another burst of monsoon southerlies early next week.

And then there's another bloody big Hurricane headed towards the Florida coast at the end of next week, it is yet to be seen whether we'll see a recurve to the NE or not.

I saw Bastardi on Twitter is concerned about that one too; reckons STR positioning will allow it onshore on the east coast. Double whammy if that happens frown

Hello Folks:

Such staggering rainfall amounts in the Houston, TX-area also happened with Tropical Storm Claudette (formed July 16th & dissipated July 29th, in 1979).
Alvin, Texas (a southern suburb of Houston), recorded 42"/1,066.8mm of rain from Claudette in 24-hours; this remains the 24-hour rainfall record for any location in the US. Parts of SE Texas recorded up to 45"/1,143.0mm in total rainfall from Claudette & parts of SW Louisiana had up to 15"/381mm from Claudette--along with significant damage & beach erosion & highway damage along the coast.
Most of the pumps that keep water out of New Orleans, LA are around 100-years old, and the significant rains really put a strain on them, as some parts of those pumps aren't made anymore & if certain parts break, they'll have to be newly fabricated.
I believe the remnants of Harvey are forecasted to move Northwards and have a fairly rainy impact on my area over the coming days.

Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow

Hello Folks:

For your Interest: Here's the Wikipedia article on Tropical Storm Claudette--in 1979--and the record rainfalls she dumped.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Claudette_(1979)

Mena copped a total of 4.30"/109.2mm of rain (0.07"/1.7mm on June 26th; 1.78"/45.2mm on June 27th & 2.35"/59.6mm on June 28th) as the remnants of Claudette tracked NE'wards over my area.

Hello Folks:

The US Weather Records site has now updated to show records through August 28th. As you can imagine, the Daily Record rainfalls are numerous & eye-popping; most all the Daily Rainfall Records (records for that Specific Date) were broken by large margins.

Among those eye-popping records: (Location; record [old record & year set in parentheses]):
Aug. 26:
Houston, TX--Hobby Airport: 12.07"/306.5mm (3.33"/84.5mm in 1959)
Aug. 27:
Houston, TX--Hobby Airport: 10.99"/279.1mm (1.44"/36.5mm in 1954)
Houston, TX--Westbury High School: 12.73"/323.3mm (1.29"/32.7mm in 1959)
Smithville, TX: 12.90"/327.6mm (3.10"/78.7mm in 1959)
Aug. 28:
Cleveland, TX: 14.90"/378.4mm (2.12"/53.8mm in 1955)
Huntsville, TX: 12.24"/310.8mm (1.70"/43.1mm in 1945)

Quite a number of Daily Low Maximum Records Broken/Tied as well.
Some of those Low Maximum & Daily Rainfall Records also Set Records For Most Rain on any August day or Most Rain on any Day.

WoW!!!~~~Wet Snow
