The seabreeze was starting to mix-in again there, though didn't quite win the battle until 3pm. A little mixing zone between the "oven" and "air-conditioner".

Today, Coffs got to 33.0C (@10:44am), Kempsey 36.3C (@12:33pm) and Port Macquarie 35.8C (@12:23pm) (well above the forecast of 29 for Port. Similar story yesterday there, forecast 33, but got to 38.2). The shallow SE'ly change didn't quite get the job done when it tried to displace the W/NW'ly on its first try at Port today -

The plume of inland dust being carried towards the NSW coast shows up well in this morning's Himawari-8 shot:

So there is going to be almost a 10+ degree jump in temperatures tomorrow in SEQ. I can recall plenty of times we've had a drop in temperatures like that, but never a rise. Very strange.

It actually looks like a weak, very shallow (below around 850hpa) warm front type structure pushed southwards along and off the coast today with a somewhat cooler ENE flow to its south (and cloud cover) over SE QLD for much of the day and warmer northerlies invading the region behind it. You can see it pushing south in the EC winds/temps and satellite imagery from today (see below).

Elevated fire dangers yet again tomorrow with the heat and gustier winds. The max temp for Brisbane itself will also depend on seabreeze timing and extent but some places still look like getting very close to, or breaking Sep records again.
Birdsville's already set a new state record today for hottest Sep max temp (records go back to 1954 when combining both sites):

All eyes for NSW tomorrow looking at Casino, and possibly Evans Head (where the sea breeze notoriously does not penetrate).
Possible shot at taking out the today's record in the NW.

There appears to be an artefact on the radar between Yarraman and Dalby on the UTC 20:48 Mt Stapylton observation. And another one up near Woolooga. Any thoughts as to what is causing this? I thought it could be a heat plume from a bushfire, but there is nothing on Sentinel?

Usually its the RAAF lads practicing to confuse the radar, this looks rather localised & heavy. Interesting.
WATL looks nice for next week. Wouldnt it be great to measure inches instead of mm?
BOM very cool on any precip atm though.

There is nothing on the Himawari sat pic that would explain those echos or the ones out to sea as well.

I would say it's a bad case of Anomalous Propogation which often occurs when there is a strong temperature inversion present just above the surface causing the radar beam to bend back towards the ground. Massive inversion here:

That's incredible, it looks as if the Sunshine Coast copped the worst of the heat today. Quite weird considering the seabreeze won out over the westerlies both up here and near the coast south of Brisbane. Not sure why that wasn't the case along the SC.

Combination of N-S orientation of coast, with even a bit NNE-SSW just north of Maroochydore Airport, and range close to the coast perhaps?

I think I've seen somewhere before that NE seabreezes funnelling through the Brisbane valley in preference to nearby ranges is an important factor in severe storm initiation.

Edit: Amberley has reached 40. None of the half a dozen stations I've been looking at for records today have reached 40 previously in September. Plenty I haven't looked at though that might have made it in the past.

Edit Reason: moved 7 posts from the day-to-day thread and into the current event thread related about the heat :-)

Bracken Ridge maxed out so far as at 15:06 at 28.3C and currently sitting on 26.3C. A very nice Northerly wind keeping it cool. It is amazing just the variations across the Brisbane Observation Area.

Not sure what those echos are on the Gympie radar, definitely not clutter like this morning since they're clearly moving east. Satellite picture shows cloud but I see none out that way from here.
