The start/end dates for this thread are a bit open-ended...and not all of the phenomena will occur through this whole period.

In short:
- The most dangerous fire risk looks like being in NSW and inland southern QLD...but our region will probably still see elevated risk as well.
- Fire risk will obviously be lower if there's less firebugs out and about (although it is school holidays I guess), if fires are contained quickly enough, there's no dry lightning, or if there's enough recent rainfall from showers/storms.
- The heat could approach, or break records in some places... although may not be as hot along the coastline if seabreezes can get in early enough.
- Raised dust possible mainly in far inland NSW/far inland southern QLD/northeastern SA. Prolonged dry conditions (also reflected in NDVI anomalies in these regions), very strong winds over those regions and frontal forcing could help to kick up some dust.
- For today/overnight, the slight chance of some very hit & miss showers or thunderstorms with low rainfall near the northern and northwestern parts of SE QLD (maybe more around the Burnett region if anything).
- For tomorrow, I think most things look good for storms in our region, some possibly severe.
If you really wanted to play devil's advocate and look on the pessimistic side of things, you could argue that any cloud cover/precip from previous activity overnight or early morning could interfere (although models currently suggest there should still be enough clear periods), there's no southerly change to help things, or that shear is a bit on the weak side. But I still think there'll be storms.

Strengthening N to NW winds dragging down very hot air over these regions ahead of a cold front sweeping across SE Australia with gusty W to SW winds behind it.

Here's some script outputs.
Note that for the fire one, it doesn't factor in whether areas have little to no vegetation to burn (e.g. desert areas).
Also, for the thunderstorm one for Friday, it goes from midnight Thu to midnight Fri so it naturally covers the early morning hours of Friday as well... not just the daytime):

Thanks Ken for your professional input. If these are going to be high based thunderstorms, what can make them severe is it wind gusts and can high based thunderstorms spawn decent lightning?

Just having a look at another modelling system and Brisbane currently has a dust particle reading of 3.9 g/m3 but out west they are recording 74.2g/m3. It is not ultra high but could be enough to trigger some respiratory problems or those with a COPD to struggle. It is building as the day progresses.

Tomorrow looks a lot better for storms than it did a few days ago, but still some issues.

Noticeably there are winds backing with height, which suggests to me that supercells might not be out of the question. Lots of instability in the atmosphere with up to 1500 CAPE over Brisbane by late afternoon. Seabreeze pushes the surface trough back toward Toowoomba in the late afternoon. Plenty of surface heating with temps reaching up to 30 with very cold uppers.

A few things I don't like though. Still feels very dry with dewpoints in the low teens, although the seabreeze does inject some moisture into the lower levels. Steering is from the NW, which makes it hit/miss for Brisbane itself, especially as the stronger storms will move E/NE. Looks like some cloud cover in the morning but clearing around midday.

All models have precipitation tomorrow afternoon. GFS keeps it entirely in the Sunshine Coast, Access-R across SEQ but with heavier falls in SC and EC has a good spread across SEQ.

Really interested to see what kind of storms develop tomorrow, if any. Some excellent severe storm conditions but they'll have to contend with the dryness.

Did you mean to say steering is from the SW?
ACCESS-R currently has steering (for the non-severe cells) from the WSW which takes on a more SSW component tomorrow night... obviously if any severe cells managed to develop, they'd take on a different track like you said.

Steering winds are a bit on the weak side though so I'm not expecting the more garden variety storms to race along... although if a cell or two managed to start becoming severe over the Scenic Rim ranges, it could take on that typical more northerly track (if it's a left mover) up into SE QLD.

Tweedstorm: I'd expect most storms inland of the coast to be high-based (the usual threat with these would be the gusty winds) but if any manage to come close enough to the coast, the seabreeze front and more moisture, their bases would become lower and maybe start trying to develop some shelf cloud structure.
If enough rich high-dewpoint air manages to get ingested into the storms closer to the coast then I don't think you'd be able to rule out hail either given the sufficiently cool midlevels... although that's only a bit of speculation on my part (I haven't had a detailed look yet).

ACCESS-R has a fair bit of instability aloft tonight/overnight/early Fri morning around our region (CAPE around 800 to 1000J/kg) above the capping but doesn't want to drop much precip except for in the north and a bit to the west.

GFS forecast sounding for Bris tomorrow afternoon and seems to be the easiest data to view has really nice lapse rate plenty of instability and low level capping. If only the shear was abit better would be looking pretty nasty. The low humidity overall and weakish shear I think is leading to the low precip percentage.

A small cell is currently passing just south of here, can see the sheets of rain in the evening light, must be a bit of moisture in the air as its certainly reaching the ground.
The last time we had over 2mm in one go was 67 days ago so even a couple of mm tomorrow would be awesome.

Nice Thread, Ken, & a very informative start well wrapped.

A rather dry trough line in the low & surface levels tomoro arv, with some moist onshores from the NE tho not quite making it to the trough, but better moisture in the 700's hpa with between 90% & upto 98% Relative Humidity in along the trough in places.
In saying that, the good moisture is only in a thin layer which would indicate high cloud bases that should form.
From there up, is going to be interesting, keeping my eyes open :-)

I'd still say unlikely....maybe just a bit of localised stuff near the SW corner, northern and coastal fringe/offshore overnight or during the wee hours.

ACCESS-R still suggests patchy early morning cloud may decrease as we head later into the morning (unless any overnight/early morning activity is more extensive than forecast).

Tonight's GFS shows a pretty big storm cell developing on the southern SC and offshore tomorrow evening. Up to 25+ mm.

The wind fields are pretty interesting for that particular area. Comparing the 4 and 7 pm a noticeable convergence from NE'lies on the 2m and 950 and increased wind speeds to 20-25 kts develop. Wind speeds on the 850 increase to 25 kts and 700 to 35 kts.

Not sure if GFS is picking up winds that help spawn the storm or if this is the inflow/shear of the cell itself. And of course it's GFS... Either way, it just goes to show that it's a dynamic environment tomorrow.

ACCESS-C has a similar feature (enhanced convection with outflow boundary) developing over central and northern parts of SE QLD tomorrow evening but it almost vanishes the associated precip later in the evening. Typically when you see these individual convective features in a high resolution model like ACCESS-C, they have a fair bit of precip with them but not this particular feature.

Having said that, I don't usually pay too much attention to the individual storms that a model forecasts (except if it's a dedicated convection-allowing model like HRRR used in the US) but ACCESS-C is getting better at replicating these and the latest version is in the process of becoming a nowcasting tool for severe thunderstorm forecasting/warning among other things.

I wouldn't expect anything less of the Mt Stapylton radar on a day like today laugh

1st map below - raised dust concentrations from EC for 10am Sat.
2nd map below - sane as above except for 10pm Sun.
3rd map below - updated thunderstorm script output for today (til midnight).

Still thinking highest thunderstorm risk will be slightly inland of the coast (e.g. Sunshine Coast hinterlands, Lockyer Valley, etc) due to the fairly weak WSW steering....but more coastal places like Brisbane metro still in with a chance.

Shear also still looks fairly weak on latest ACCESS-R which is a shame and a waste because the thermodynamics look great (including the 500hpa temps which are more than cold enough to support large hail but if we had stronger shear, this would greatly boost the large hail risk).
Maybe still just enough shear together with the seabreeze front to help with a bit of organisation.

Mainly sunny morning skies which should help.

But no coastal southerly change.

So given all that, there'll definitely be storms in our region but I'm thinking the majority of them will be non-severe and a bit pulsey with the outside chance that a small proportion of them might become severe:

Yeah Ken that dust per g/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter) has risen sharply from this time yesterday. Last night it hit 794.4 g/m3 to this morning of 1074g/m3 with the latest run.

To put it into perspective the Red Dawn dust storm on 22 and 23 September 2009, the concentration level measured near Sydney was 15,366 μg/m3 with Visibility down to 400M. But still 1074g/m3 is not pleasant and will leave a film of dust everywhere and people coughing, sneezing or wheezing. As it is our cars have a layer over them everyday. Just hoping that the NW winds can keep that dust to the south of us.

Hi all. Yes conditions are ripe for dust storms .It is very dusty here its so dry and have wind from the South West between 20 and 38kmh ,Forecast to be from the West North west .33 degs already.
Have been in 3 dust storms 2 on the coast and one out here.
On a funny note 20 years ago family out here were having lunch and just all got our bowls of ice cream ,And we watches a large dust devil coming down the middle of the road .We were all watching and starting to eat ice cream then it hung a left and hit the house and veranda,It left us all covered in dirt and mud for ice cream .We had to laugh lol

Looks like more heat late next week as well as this weekend. Pretty crazy how we're having a 3 month early summer up here, while down south they're having the best end to a snow season in 20 years.

Sunshine coast doing well in a NW setup? Never thought I'd see the day.

Still got to see if there is enough shear to get them down from the hills.

Great to see the radar lighting up again! It's been a bit of a slow start this spring.

The storm just NE of Gatton is producing an incredible amount of lightning according to the tracker, the sea breeze is gusting quite strong at the moment so hopefully it'll continue to inject more moisture for it to grow!

I think Stappy has dreadfully overcooked the storm out your way... looking out towards Oxley-ish way from here it just looks like light rain, there was even a gap in the clouds.

Likewise, here we should be under green-intensity rain, but I'm sitting here with my window open and our roof is barely running off.

Spoke too soon. Good dump of rain and some pea-sized hail. There would have been some bigger stones south of here judging by the radar.

Just drove home from Noosa to Doonan. Moderate heavy rain in Noosa with some pea size hail. I would not be surprised if Noosa-Tewantin records 10-15mm of rain in the end. However back at Doonan and as I drove out of town less rain and at home we only got 2.5mm. Unfortunately rain did not fall in the hinterland where needed to fill home tanks. Enough to dampen grass for a bit.
Can only hope for a round 2 but not holding my breath.

A few good isolated storms around with some close CG's in the SW part of town. Only 5 drops of rain however which should about do it for the month. No measurable rain recorded for September. In general, only trace amounts over the past 4 months. The driest I have seen it here since spring 2009. Hope some of you got lucky today. It was nice to hear thunder again but.

Nothing here, looked promising earlier but is now clear skies apart from the area of storms towards the sunny coast. Looks likely that our September total will be a big fat zilch, and after 0.8mm in August things are fairly desperate here. And almost 7 days of 34C+ from Sunday onwards, unheard of for this time of year, especially considering the record max here for Sept is 35.9C and before that was just 34.0C!!

Currently in Gympie Southside...the wind has really picked up here the last 5 minutes, the storm cell hitting the Sunny Coast looking at the radar doesn't appear to be going any further North then Kandanga, so doubt we'll see rain here...been a nice light show to our South though

Despite a few problems the set-up was quite promising for this time of year. And then it definitely delivered above expectations. Some good falls, hail and a great lightning show. Probably the best September storm event that I can remember.

Unfortunately we look very storm-deprived in the weeks to come.

Not enough precipitation to wet the ground here. The region did better than expected, however.
A few nice cells went to the north and south in reasonably close proximity.

Looked like a decent storm this afternoon moved through the Bellingen-Dorrigo area and then just inland of Coffs Harbour where it died out, bringing no rain to the city.
Since July 16th (69 days ago), there has only been 0.2mm fall at the Coffs Harbour AWS. Quite amazing, it's hard to imagine Coffs so dry. We've had 4.8mm here since July 16th. Very dry on the NENSW Coast, quite a number of places with just 1-5mm over this period (the odd place here and there with 0-1mm).
Hopefully the final three months of the year are more kind.

It was a wonderful light show here and a total of 2.2mm, which broke the 35 day dry spell and settled the dust a bit.

Now comes the heat!

Very nice picture CJl. The last of storms that hit around 19:30 gave us a total of 11mm. It was pretty impressive for the amount of lightning it threw at us. Now the heat comes and drags all that moisture away. DOH!

We ended up getting 9.4mm at home here, I was out and about during the storms around 3pm and the lightning was just tremendous. Constant flangs and plenty of CC lightning as well.

Whoever posted the other day that storms were likely to be highly charged was spot on.

We had a second cell come through around 8PM where I was at Albany Creek and it was just as ferocious. I was getting in my car at the time and a MASSIVE flang went off right as I touched the door handle, just about gave me a heart attack haha.

A miserable 3mm here from the storms yesterday. It's been quite humid here today (for September) with not much wind - no fun!

I noticed the QLD BOM have not included forecast temps for next sat.Maybe they don't want to scare us with extreme temps.

Seabreezes kept the coastal fringe from exceeding about 30-31C today. A bit further inland though the dry NW/NNW'ly winds reigned, Kempsey maxed out at 35.5C. Feels like an evening in late spring, low 20s with dewpoints around 17-18.

Warmer conditions expected tomorrow: Kempsey 37C, Coffs 35C and Port 33C. There should be a couple of storms up on the tablelands tomorrow. The consensus seems to be that it is likely to remain fine on the coast though (only small chances of precip at this stage).
Severe Fire Danger for the North Coast, Far North Coast & New England fire districts too.

Seabreeze, might be worth extending the end date of this thread to say 30th Sep given the overall continuation of the heat til then?

IF Thursday's max temp is reached, it would break the all-time record for hottest Sep max temp in Brisbane (Amberley's going for 40C).

But I think I'd rather wait til the day to see if that happens considering how tricky Brisbane can be when it comes to max temps and seabreeze timings (EC currently suggests the W'lies might keep out the seabreeze for long enough that day to allow that heat although it also has a weak coastal change approaching the border later that day).

VIC and NSW have also already broken their state heat records for September.

Not surprised that records are being broken Ken....Hot and blustery today, 65% humidity - going for 30C and no rain forecast...feels like we skipped Spring and jumped straight into Summer! Oh for a good soaking storm.....

It looks like the sea breeze briefly failed at Coffs Harbour, allowing a spike to 38.8 at 2:30PM, smashing the old September record of 35.2.

33.9 C for the high here today. Quite breezy and dry as expected. Was a bit uncomfortable, but not as bad as I had though it would be. I see it has been hotter in other places by reading your posts...
We actually had 5 drops of rain about 30 min ago from a towering cumulus. Looks to be more significant rain out towards Inglewood. Hope it holds together. Doesn't look like much, but anything would be nice. Even a little CG action in a few of the cells out west.

I know there are other factors in play, but it is frustrating to see all of the colder waters in the Pacific, (like La Nina), yet we can't buy a drop of rain here...

Coffs got to 38.8C today, Kempsey 38.6C and Port 38.2C.
Coffs' spike to 38.8C this afternoon was quite sudden and short-lived. The afternoon seabreeze only failed for about 40-45 minutes, as you can see below -

The seabreeze didn't fail here this afternoon, so it just continued to be a warm, moderately humid day. Our north-facing bay leaves us prone to picking up a seabreeze if there's one to be found.
Brother is up from Canberra, he's not enjoying the humidity (grew up here, but has acclimatised to down there). He should be thankful it's not as humid as Summer-March often is, lol.

Storms on the tablelands and western slopes this afternoon/evening. The storms are very fast moving and high-based, so they've largely brought no measurable precipitation (virga). Only one storm has broken through the coast so far, down on the far southern MNC.

Fire Weather Warning for the North Coast and Far North Coast again tomorrow.

The wind was strange all day yesterday (at Urunga 15 mins south of Coffs).

If I remember correctly around that time there was a sudden, strong gust of wind that lasted for about 10 minutes then dissipated.

Not so bad today sitting at 24.1C on the coast, 69% humidity. Skies clear as french crystal, not a cloud in sight, but very windy which probably helps keep the temperatures down. The weekend looks like having a chance of some rain smile

The seabreeze was starting to mix-in again there, though didn't quite win the battle until 3pm. A little mixing zone between the "oven" and "air-conditioner".

Today, Coffs got to 33.0C (@10:44am), Kempsey 36.3C (@12:33pm) and Port Macquarie 35.8C (@12:23pm) (well above the forecast of 29 for Port. Similar story yesterday there, forecast 33, but got to 38.2). The shallow SE'ly change didn't quite get the job done when it tried to displace the W/NW'ly on its first try at Port today -

It actually looks like a weak, very shallow (below around 850hpa) warm front type structure pushed southwards along and off the coast today with a somewhat cooler ENE flow to its south (and cloud cover) over SE QLD for much of the day and warmer northerlies invading the region behind it. You can see it pushing south in the EC winds/temps and satellite imagery from today (see below).

Elevated fire dangers yet again tomorrow with the heat and gustier winds. The max temp for Brisbane itself will also depend on seabreeze timing and extent but some places still look like getting very close to, or breaking Sep records again.
Birdsville's already set a new state record today for hottest Sep max temp (records go back to 1954 when combining both sites):

All eyes for NSW tomorrow looking at Casino, and possibly Evans Head (where the sea breeze notoriously does not penetrate).
Possible shot at taking out the today's record in the NW.

There appears to be an artefact on the radar between Yarraman and Dalby on the UTC 20:48 Mt Stapylton observation. And another one up near Woolooga. Any thoughts as to what is causing this? I thought it could be a heat plume from a bushfire, but there is nothing on Sentinel?

WATL looks nice for next week. Wouldnt it be great to measure inches instead of mm?

I would say it's a bad case of Anomalous Propogation which often occurs when there is a strong temperature inversion present just above the surface causing the radar beam to bend back towards the ground. Massive inversion here:

That's incredible, it looks as if the Sunshine Coast copped the worst of the heat today. Quite weird considering the seabreeze won out over the westerlies both up here and near the coast south of Brisbane. Not sure why that wasn't the case along the SC.

Combination of N-S orientation of coast, with even a bit NNE-SSW just north of Maroochydore Airport, and range close to the coast perhaps?

I think I've seen somewhere before that NE seabreezes funnelling through the Brisbane valley in preference to nearby ranges is an important factor in severe storm initiation.

Edit: Amberley has reached 40. None of the half a dozen stations I've been looking at for records today have reached 40 previously in September. Plenty I haven't looked at though that might have made it in the past.

Can see the battle between the westerlies and the seabreeze on Stapy's Doppler wind.

Here's a more comprehensive list of the QLD record breakers today (a number of NE NSW records were smashed as well of course):

It got to a toasty 35.3C here at 14:19, which is impressive considering I am 400m elevation and normally a bit cooler!
There was some amazing hot winds that blew from time to time and luckily no bush fires.

Yeah a couple of records broken in the far NE corner today which spent the day on the northern side of the trough.

- Casino 40.2C, record was 38.7C (combining two sites: the 'new' Airport Records: 1995-present / the 'old' Airport Records: 1965-2012)
- Lismore 39.6C, record was 37.2C (combining two sites: the Airport Records: 2002-present / the Town Records: 1957-2003)
- Ballina 38.2C, record was 33.0C (Records: 1992-present)(a short history of records but still a significant temp for September from an AWS only 4-5kms inland)
- Murwillumbah 37C (rounded, final figure comes in tomorrow), record was 36.0C - (Records: 1972-present)

~

There was literally 15 drops of rain here this afternoon that fell over a period of a couple of minutes. It came from the cloudband crossing the northern parts of NSW, which is struggling to produce recordable rain.

Today up in the Wide Bay area,
Gympie 38.2C (new record Sep high, 52 years of records)
Maryborough 34.7C (new record Sep high, 60 years of records)

BTW, in my previous post I forgot to mention those were September records yesterday. I think everyone would have just assumed so anyway, but I should have specifically mentioned it.
