Worthy of it's own thread now.
Many locations, including the state record now on notice.

Edit Reason: added year

The forecast high for Saturday here is 25C. Around this area official weather station are few and their observations are not continuous. Nonetheless 25.6C in Oberon town on September 24th 1965 and 23.9C at Gurnang on September 26th 1965 are stand outs.

The following histogram shows the frequency of 20C+ September days recorded at Bathurst Ag each decade since 1908 inclusive (one cross represents 10 days). The big spike includes the Millennium Drought 2000-2006. There certainly seems to have been a step shift in September climate since the turn of this century - at least in this part of NSW.

Looks like it will be almost as hot again around the middle of next week. Odd increasingly favour a more humid, moist October the longer these patterns drag on.

Heat is building in the NW area of the state, many centres now forecasting 40C on Saturday.
Singleton in the Hunter Valley going for 37C on Saturday.
After a brief cool down on Sunday, there could be a 2nd crack at the record by mid next week as well.

A snippet from one of the news feeds on this site quoting a hotel proprietor in Bourke.

"Out here it gets to 50 degrees in summer, so 40 doesn't scare us. "

Now has someone told the BoM about these 50 degree temperatures? I'm sure people like Blair would be interested in this? poke

Yes I am sure the hotel owner has recorded 50C under his front porch or verandah.
Just not an official weather station though.
But 40C will be impressive if it gets there.
Birdsville and the Qld channel country look to crack it first on Friday, then the heat will track into NSW.

OH has nearly made its forecast max (28), having reached 26.8 a little while ago, but the sea breeze is trying to get going there.

Beautiful outside, warm, clear sky, gentle breezes.

September sunshine hours are tracking at 9.6 per day. Apart from being rainless, it's been almost cloudless.

It's now looking very dry around here. Good rain in early June kept lawns and gardens healthy for a while but I think that's all been used up.

I don't think this event is going to penetrate the coast by the looks of it.
Certainly no records in danger in Sydney city, other than outer western suburbs, Hunter Valley and inland areas of the state.

Incredibly dry here today, 25 at Moss Vale with 12% humidity. But down to single digits in the west of the state like 4-5% humidity in some places. So amazingly dry airmass.

The September Equinox in Sydney is tomorrow, Saturday, 23 September 2017 at 6:02 am AEST. If we had a record for the hottest Spring equinox, tomorrow would be set to break it.

OH's max forecast for tomorrow remains at 33, Penrith and Richmond have been bumped up to 37, a new record for September if it comes off.

Sunday has been bumped up to 33 for OH, 35 at Penrith and Richmond.

Yep, the seasons are a changing.
Seems we do not have genuine shoulder seasons anymore, which is usually the best time of the year imo.
Tomorrow is going to be interesting, esp after a 30C diurnal range in Singo today, and 27C here. I will be working in Whittingham tomorrow.
Newcastle (Nobbys Head) also going for 33C on Sat and 34C on Sun, could get close to a record on that headland station as well.

I would not rule out a 39C in Sydney tomorrow, maybe not at Obs Hill, but in the west. Provided the NW winds completely mix down. 38C (with possible 39) should be a given at home if the NWer takes over. Will be 31C here at least. Records will be axed far and wide tomorrow!! A historic day coming up.

I wonder how much of this cloud will spoil the party??

I thought I heard the storm bird the other morning and I was right, he was going off his tree at 4.30am this morning.

Yeah pretty cloudy here in the Highlands too Eddy, hopefully it doesn't spoil today's potential.

Will be some very impressive diurnal ranges today. Goulburn down to -0.3 this morning and should reach 30C and Canberra about 1 degree. Even Camden down to 6.5C this morning and should get up to 38C today, so diurnal ranges of above 30!

Very warm here despite cloud, already up past 20C and with 9% humidity and dew point of -13.6C.

Something we haven't seen much of lately - an overcast sky. The cloud must have arrived around dawn, given that places that get inversions had pretty chilly (single figure) minima. Judging by the Satellite, the cloud has been back building since then.

The BOM's updated the forecast at 8:19 to 'morning cloud clearing' and is still going for 33 / 37 for OH / Penrith. The 'look out the window' test would disagree. Not only is it cloudy but there's very little wind about. Wind observations are all over the place.

That being said, there's warm air about, it's already 22 at Mt Boyce, equivalent to 29 at sea level. The flags on the Harbour Bridge show a brisk NW'er.

We shall see.

NW centres look on target to take out the state Sept record, one would think, numerous centres going for 40C. 33.8C already in the NW corner town of Tibooburra.

The cloud is thinning and breaking up from the South. Temperatures are now on the move, Bellembi now 30 (as Kino noted in the D2D thread), Airport 29, OH 27.

Penrith still hasn't reached 20 but it should shoot up there when the Sun comes out. Nearby Richmond is on 25.

Still only 23C at Penrith, while the hottest location around is Moruya Ap with 34C.

Up here at Bowral it's mostly sunny and 29C which is also a new record already.

The cloud is reforming over Sydney, but places under sunshine are very warm already: Nowra 33, Moruya 34. The 29 at Bowral would be equivalent to 33-34 at sea level.

The NE'er just started at Bellambi, knocking 5 degrees off the temperature.

Scone has just taken out it's Sept record, 34C now. (27 years of records at Scone AP, previous 33.6C)
Real heat yet to funnel down the Hunter just yet.

Moruya Airport reached 36.0 at 12:30, smashing the record for the current site (32.0 - since 1999) and the Pilot Station site (34.7 - since 1910).

EDIT: meanwhile, the cloud hung on in Sydney long enough for the seabreezes to get started. OH now 30.8 with a light NE'er at Fort Dennison. Penrith has now been unleashed, now 34.5, up 10 degrees in a little over an hour.

Looks like we will have to have a very late max in the Lower Hunter, if we are to take out the records now.
Singleton has just hit 35C, and just taken off for a surge.

I think it's because the seabreeze at Albion Park blows over the lake before reaching there, whereas here it completely goes over land between here and the ocean.

At the bottom of Macquarie Pass though there was a strong NWer and I reckon it was 35-36C but I don't have a car thermometer. frown

Edit: Actually it's gone more northerly now and temp 34.0. Certainly feels that warm too. Very nice!

Looks like Penrith and Richmond have got the 37C as forecast, a record for the Sydney Basin in September.
Such temps have not eventuate in the Hunter though, unless Singleton suddenly turns on the heat again.

Looks like Wilcannia got the state September record, as predicted by WR, at 41C.
At least until other centres that do not have 24 hour records are checked. (including previous record holder Wanaaring, Brewarrina, Collarenebri etc)
Edit: Brewarinna has not kept any records for the last few days, does this every month for a few days it seems, so unlikely any challenge from there.

I wonder who writes this guff -

Quote:
A new September record for New South Wales has been broken and total fire bans remain in place across half of the state as an unseasonal heatwave takes hold.

How can a new record be broken? Do they mean the old record has been smashed or a new record made? And "heatwave"? yeah it was hell hot for inland NSW and parts of Urban areas; but one or 2 days of heat doesn't make a heatwave.

Wow that was a brief spike indeed, none of the half hour obs show temps above 30.5C.

I reckon that line of echoes on radar around Goulburn could be dust.

Wed next week appears to have been downgraded for NW areas, to 39C as a max in some spots. (Wanaaring, Walgett, Brewarrina)
This is only a very isolated area of the state as well, and not widespread like today.
Another crack at the Sept record this month seems unlikely now, so today was it.
Edit - the NE corner of the state, Grafton, Casino, Evans Head could still pull something off tomorrow or next week.

Might a record September Mininum be on the cards for some locations tonight? In coastal locations near Sydney it's about 27. At OH it was 23.0 at 9:00 and the record is 22.0 (24/9/2003).

We shall see.

It's a barmy night outside. I left the air conditioning (too cold) to enjoy the warmth.

Just been tallying up records. Of the 25 long-term stations I use for tracking in NSW, there are 14 definite records and 2 probables (Gunnedah Ag and Moruya Heads, where we'll need the final manual obs at 9am to confirm). Also 5 in Victoria, and 1 in Queensland. Largest record-breaking margin at these sites so far is 2.1 at Bathurst (coincidentally, I spent the afternoon within 1km of this site), although Kerang might edge above that when its final report comes in. From our preliminary analysis, looks like records over around 80% of NSW.

Still a scorcher here in the Highlands with 26C and it actually warmed slightly in the last few hours. Meanwhile Albion Park is at 16C.

min records over the tablelands would probably be smashed thanks to high temps + decent wind and cloud cover.

Wow Ulladulla nudging 32C!! Bega, Moruya and Nowra also in the 30's. Goulburn at 27C is pretty absurd too so could get even warmer on the coast. Is it January or September? confused poke

Even a few drops of rain up here and wind really picking up. Very gusty and trying to mix down I think.

Stupid high temps here tonight, went UP from about 8pm. Still quite elevated at around 26 now. Could see lots of dust swirling in the lights outside. So as mentioned earlier those radar echoes almost certainly areas of raised dust. Air tastes VERY dusty. Zero precip

It is 28 degrees at 11.45pm here in Riverwood. I always believed in climate change...now I am a firm believer.

This is just wrong at this time of the year. I can understand late October....

Who turned on the heaters?

When I went to bed it was 26.9c at 10.30pm at Horsley Park (an official BoM site close to me), it got to 28.2c at 2.30am and at 4am it was 27.6c!

Now outside the wind is howling from the NW at around 60+km/h as well! CRAZY, as the temps around here were supposed to drop to 18c overnight.

Has this ever happened before in New South Wales for any month ( 80% of the state establishing a new monthly record on the same day ), or, are you aware whether something similar has happened in the other states, to that extent?

It's just incredible.

Sydney OH minimum of 25.7C at 6:41pm yesterday
Now 27.6C

How much will that smash the September record by?

Looks like previous September record was 22.0.
Looks like that record is about to get obliterated.

Wow that is a big gust!!

Possibly one of the warmest nights ever (inc. summer) at Obs Hill last night, only got down to 25.6C. But yesterday 9am was 23.0 so that will be the min as Yep said. There's a slight chance that the temp could drop below 23.0 before 9am today but hopefully not.

Still an extraordinary effort though.

There will be some incredible minimums at places where yesterday warmed up really quick. Scone Ap for example, the min is just 25.8C!! Some records may be smashed by several degrees.

Holy hell, 29.9C at 0730, 31.8C at Tocal, 29.9 at Williamtown and even Nobbys Head at 29.2C.
Was slow to warm up yesterday, compared with Scone, so record minimums unlikely here.

Still pretty impressive to beat a record by that margin, even if it is a pretty short term record.

PS: Obs Hill beat it's September record by 1.0 degree with 23.0C as the min. Could've been higher than the November record as well if 9am yesterday was a bit warmer. Nov record only 24.1.

I think a weak cool change passed through Sydney around 7:00AM, with a subtle wind shift from N of W to S of W. There was a small drop in temperature from 28 to 26 at OH. The temperature has been rising only very slowly since then, to 27 now. This contrasts with sites in the Central Coast and Hunter, where temperatures are now into the low 30s.

Finally, last nights heat hit's the Sydney press this morning.

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/weathe...923-gynjoc.html

Quote:
Much of NSW would have felt like they spooned a hot water bottle last night.

Sydneysiders especially would be forgiven for thinking they'd slept with the heaters on as the city sweltered through one of the warmest September evenings on record.

Temperatures in the city did not dip below 26 degrees on Saturday evening, an event weather experts describe as "phenomenal".

"We expect lots of variability for this time of year, but not quite to these extremes," Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jake Phillips said.

Sydney's overnight minimum temperature was 25.7 degrees, beating the September record by 1 degree which was set in the usual 9am to 9am 24-hour reporting period.

Yes the overnight minimum temp was 25.7 degree.
But as posted on here overhight, that was not the minimum temp for the 24 hour period

As the 24 hour minimum temp was 23.0 degrees at around 9am yesterday morning. 1 degree above the previous record max min Sep temp of 22.0.

The BOM does not help with the way it lists minimum temps on their observations page, in not actually displaying the 24 hour minimum temps, and thus likely confusing any media that go there to get what they think are 24 hour minimum temps. (Including the media owners of this website)

The 24 hour minimum means record high minimums, and sometimes even record low, are almost impossible to beat, as well as being unrepresentative of what happened at night.

Record lows arent impacted. Low maximums can be though.

SMH has actually done pretty well there IMO to describe the actual overnight min but then clarify the nature of the 9am reset

The BOM are still going for 33 across Sydney in their 10:17 update, in spite of there having been little warming since 7:00AM. At some stage later today, it will gradually cool down.

Had the SMH wrote something like

"Sydney's overnight minimum temperature was 25.7 degrees, beating the September 9am 9am 24-hour reporting period previous highest minimum temp record (22.0) by 1.0 degrees when the temperature dropped to 23.0 at 9am yesterday morning."

then I would agree with you.

But the omission of key facts, like either the 22.0 previous record, the new 23.0 record, or even what the previous September record was for an "overnight" minimum temp, and what the definition was for "overnight", and what the definition of minimum temp is on the BOM Observations page, does not fit within my criteria of having done "pretty well". IMO

Pretty hot in the north, 34C at Tocal, 36 at Taree and 37 at Kempsey.

Here it's pretty miserable and cloudy with 18C currently.

Taree used to top the state a fair bit back in the day, before they moved the weather station east to the airport in the late 90s.
But yes, it looks like peak heat will be around there to Kempsey today.

Yeah that would make sense given that the town would be away from the sea breeze on many days.

Kempsey seems to get very hot, as does Port Macquarie when the sea breeze gets pushed away.

Funny weather today. At OH it's been stuck in the high 20s for over 24 hours. The cloud has stuck around since early morning, backbuilding from the coast, with no sunny break longer than about 10 minutes that I've noticed. Nowhere in Sydney has reached 31 since the 9:00 cutoff. OH's maximum looks to have been 29.2, with most sites around 28-30.

Back to more normal weather for the time being, but still above average with no sign of significant rain in sight.

Plenty of sun here but cant get past 28,wind too strong and cooler than yesterday. Also, I think the amount of dust in the air is also keeping a lid on temps - not worth washing the car a yet, itll be dirtier after Ive finished.

Yes Steve777, funny sort of a day. Southwest change came through right on lunch and cooled things down considerably by 7-8 degrees, then the breeze became onshore for a brief period cooling things even further. Since the wind has died down to nothing the temp has warmed up slightly. Currently 25c and very hazy skies!!

Nice afternoon for beers and BBQ too!!

So does anyone or anywhere keep records for NSW overnight maximum minimum temps from between say midnight and sunrise?

It's possible to generate them for any site which has 1-minute data (we've got an internal tool to do that), but few sites have more than 10-15 years of 1-minute data. For longer-term stuff, if I'm in the office (which I'm not) I generally search 3am and 6am temperatures to look for possible candidates for extremely hot nights historically.

It appears a 2nd crack at the state record next week is back on again now it seems.
Looks like Wilcannia's record yesterday could well be short-lived.
This follows intense heat building in Birdsville and Qld channel country, getting to 42C there.
Brewarrina and Wanaaring going for 42C on Wed, Collarenebri and Walgett going for 41C, Bourke 40C.
This event will not be statewide though, only in this region.
Wilcannia and nearby White Cliffs though are only going for 32-33C, so not in the mix this time.

Today was a rather odd day. Plenty of cloud but periods of half sunshine and then even a few drops of rain around 12:30-1pm as I was driving around the countryside. Then it cleared to sunshine in the late arvo and the sky was a slightly unusual colour. Very light blue at rhe horizon but this weird almost greyish blue overhead. By 4pm there was not a cloud in the sky. But yet the temp more or less hovered around 18C for the whole day, despite a mix of cloud, rain drops and sun at seperate times of the day.

Also rained a little last night and every rain drop on the car left red dust on the car. Gave it a hose and the drops dried very quickly into red dust again so there must've been very fine dust in the air as well as the rain drops.

Yes great sunset pictures CS22.

Talk of dusty skies brought to my mind the great dust storm of 2009. Yesterday was the 8th anniversary. Here's some vision, not mine, just something I found of You Tube. There are lots to choose from:

Sydney Dust Storm 23 Sept 2009

There's a thread about it here: NSW Dust Storm. Unfortunately most of the pictures were on Photobucket.

-----

A very pleasant night outside. Little wind, about 20 on the coast, down to 12 in the usual cold hollows.

Looks like we set two records on the weekend.

One was a new min record of 14.9 vs old record of 13.6, the other was a max which appears to be 31.2 vs 29.

Breeze is VERY cool out here today.

Yep.
Yamba too only 24C, compared with 36C at Evans Head.
Yamba Pilot Station is like Cape Byron in it's location.
This is why you cannot take any notice of a headland temperature, Nobbys Head in Newcastle included.

Bourke now upgraded to 42C on Wednesday as well, along with Mungindi.
The state September record looks almost certain to go again.
Will be interesting to see who gets the prize out of these perennial hot spots.
The far NE corner will also feel the heat, esp on Thursday.

All eyes will be on the above centres tomorrow, along with Brewarrina, Tibooburra and Wanaaring, and the whole of the Northwest.
It also looks like Birdsville in Qld has put the national September record on notice tomorrow as well going for 43C, challenging West Roebuck in WA.
Will be interesting to see what eventuates tomorrow in the far NW corner of the state.
Heat chasers, this would be a great day if you can get out there.

36C already in Tibooburra, which is almost SA time where it is on the NSW-Qld-SA border area. 38C in Birdsville.

Bourke has peaked at 40.7C so far, so Wilcannia's state record of 40.5C from last week has definitely gone.
Still some more time to peak again, and centres that do not have 24 hour readings to report.
Edit - Delta AWS near Wanaaring has peaked at 41.3C now, state record for September just set.
Birdsville so far has equalled the Qld state record of 42.6C, but still needs more time to get the national record.

It would have to count, surely, as the new NSW state Sept record.
Looks the national record is close but no cigar for SW Qld, peaking at a rounded 43C but just under.
