So what's the chance of storms in Sydney or within a few hours drive tomorrow?

Over the ranges, yes, coastal areas I'd say not that good. Depend on how much sun and timing of the change tomorrow.

Personally I would be very surprised if there are thunderstorms around here tomorrow, I'd say less than 5% chance. More likely in the Hunter but again I think that forecast is way over exaggerating. The Northern Tablelands and adjacent coast will probably score something though.

But it will be hot, should be in the low 30's quite easily I reckon. I also would expect little or no rain with the cool change tomorrow evening.

Here's hoping I'm wrong though, would love a storm or even some actual rain!

I'm sure the rain will return soon, hopefully with storms. I don't think storm's are that likely tomorrow but it must be soon now.

It was trying to rain here earlier this evening (without success).

Real mixed bag of days this week, but still tracking slightly above average for October. (allowing for the obligatory day in the month already with missing data as well)
A big contrast to last year where October was well below average, and over 2/3 of days failed to make the average max.
Some very light rain overnight, but only 0.2mm registered at the official weather station in 24 hours, which is only a trace.

It was raining when I woke up but now skies are completely clear to my west here, so should warm up rather quickly. If we had the moisture today we'd get some storms but the westerlies will dry everything out. Should get 32C here so a warm day ahead.

Thanks Steve, and nice way to promote your videos and get more views!! grin

Don't think it'll dry anything out WR; it's warm and sticky outside. We could see storms today; mainly on the ranges as I said. We'll prob get the wafting anvil as per usual. But, sure is trying it's best. I'll wait for the sounding first.

21/17 with NE'erlies in already. Hopefully they have a deep fetch and pump moisture into the approaching trough. *waiting* for the sounding - last nights showed some decent instability, with very good upper jet aloft.

Hi everybody - well I suppose 5mm is better than nothing smile

HOWEVER - I suspect the race people would have preferred PROPER rain if it was going to do it - not annoying stuff just enough to make their life a little too exciting. smile

At the moment there is a large BLOB of sparking cloud out around Cobar. It looks like it "might" come here but we may only get the southern edge of it. Or it may actually juuuust miss us.

MUDGEE might do well out of that blob.

Endless stream of traffic heading eastwards this morning. smile

Moisture staying strong; waiting on sounding to see what's happening upstairs. Clearly there's some drier air (looking at Cu being shredded as they get up) but with strong heating and healthy DP's it could go ok. If storms *do* get going then expect they'll be severe IMO.

It cleared shortly after sunrise here. It's now warm, bright and sunny with light winds and the sea breeze just getting started at OH.

Some sites around Sydney finished with around 1mm of rain or less to 9:00AM this morning, but most of Sydney, including OH and Chatswood, had no measureable rain to 9:00.

OH has gone 25 days without rain and has had under 2mm in last 66 days. Chatswood has gone 42 days without rain.

I know this may not be the page for this post but could somebody have a look at the last 3 hr sat animation over NW of NSW and notice the zebra type affect with what looks like low clouds running east west. Only the they are not moving. I know there is no geographical features that correspond to this in that area so I have a theory that it was the paths of last nights storms as one of the lines passes directly over Tibooburra which we know had a storm last night. Is it possible that its the change in ground temperature or something like that that is the cause. I don't believe I have seen it before.

They're called Lee Wave clouds.

Quote:
Both lee waves and the rotor may be indicated by specific wave cloud formations if there is sufficient moisture in the atmosphere, and sufficient vertical displacement to cool the air to the dew point. Waves may also form in dry air without cloud markers.[4] Wave clouds do not move downwind as clouds usually do, but remain fixed in position relative to the obstruction that forms them.
