Did you manage so see the cloud-covered Mt Keira yesterday?

Interesting model update this arvo - the BoM hi-res ACCESS-R shows a blob of 10-15mm for the coastal strip along the Illawarra and Sydney now.

Yep sure did, it was quite covered in cloud while further south it was clearing up and quite a lot of blue sky.

It was quite awesome, both Mt Kembla and Mt Keira covered. I was going to nick up there to check it out but it cleared too quickly.

Outlook for November to January: for our part of the world, average to above average rainfall, average to slightly cooler for temperatures.

Outlook Nov to Jan

The coolness and wetness seems to be focused on NE inland NSW, which to me suggests NW cloud bands and inland troughs, with a dominant Easterly pattern.

November and December look average or a little below for temperatures for us, while the 3 month period looks average. That suggested a warmer January.

We shall see.

Cheers Steve; that's a pretty significant change since the last one only 2 weeks ago.

Very interesting Steve777. Well lets hope this above average rainfall falls where its needed, even here its getting on the dry side of things and there is even talk of water restrictions coming into play. Anyway like you said time will tell.

Just hoping there is a fair share of storms thrown into the mix!!

Looking at the today's sounding shows how weak today southerly really was. Today's southerly was only a couple hundred metres in height at its peak, generally most southerly changes are much higher in height. More of a surface change really!!

I wonder if Homer got his southerly breeze?

Sure was a shallow southerly. SEer down on the coast with extremely hazy air but then up on top of the escarpment there was a strong westerly with crystal clear conditions.

Kino there will be many more times where MT Keira will be covered in fog as we hit the warmer months. smile

This is a pic I took up there earlier this year in March. (Sorry about link, can't copy image URL from a smart phone)

Nice - but that looks like an eastward moving event? A westward moving event I think would be rare unless it was an ECL (which would lower the LFC due to cyclogensis)? That's what impressed me about the other day; it was pure orographic cloud from a very unstable lower level ne'erly flow. Pity no upper support.

It was actually weather from the NW IIRC with light rain falling but the lower clouds were drifting in from the NE I think and probably forming because of the saturated atmosephere from the rain that had been falling.

Orographic low cloud hugging the escarpment seems to be common in summer, I see it because my house is so close to it. Keep an eye out and you will be surprised how often it does happen. Occurs in southerlies, easterlies, noreasters- basically any direction from the ocean when there is very high humidity.

In fact many summer days it has been cloudy at home with fog sometimes on the escarpment, only for it to be sunny at Port Kembla Beach further away from the mountains.

Donít disagree but I was referring to only Mt Keira and Mt Kembla being covered while the rest was clear (as you noted).

Oh okay apologies for the misunderstanding. In that case I agree it is uncommon for the rest of the escarpment to be clear.

How things have changed, I was away for four days around Yass/Wagga Wagga/Cootamundra,and I was amazed at how green it is down that way compared to Sydney. It's usually the other way around!

When I checked my rain gauge when I got home we had ...wait for it 1mm!

Well it's greening up nicely here now too. I suspect showers for you coasties over next couple of days.

cool morning here with a min about 3 degrees - full sun though and warming quickly, currently about 11 and heading up.

It's been a fairly cloudy morning here after a sunny start. Sydney seems to have a bit of an 'Adams Family' cloud parked over it, especially the North. It'll probably burn off later. The Westerly is very light, it will be replaced by a NE'er soon. I think the city will fall short of the forecast (24 coast, 28 inland).

It looks like we have a cool(-ish), cloudy and slightly wet (5-10mm) weekend coming up.

I'm headed out to Cooks Gap for a month from tomorrow, will be interesting to see what transpires out there. They desperately need rain and plenty of it, all though apparently they had 17mm last Sunday. That's a good start. Will keep you posted as to what happens smile

Noticeably greener here around Bowral as well even though there hasn't been much rain, but obviously just enough. There's even a bit of actual growth around. Dry as a bone on the coast though.
