Well day 2 of our official start to cyclone season 2017 seems like its time for a new thread.

Things sure seem different to the last couple of Build Ups.

Cheers

Doubt you need to take an umbrella, RF..

Just started to do some long overdue mowing this morning and some light showers started..just enough to wet the grass through..

Some solid clouds around your way Pogo, a little downpour just before Innisfail, quite breezy and cooler in Cardwell.

I'm not much of a drinker but I'm just about to have a quiet couple of brewski's this lovely arvo as well...

Just how nice is the weather though..30c or so days with about 20c or so nights and a little bit of humidity to give that tropical feel that we all love...

I see some models hinting at a bit of precipitation later on next week..that would certainly be nice..

What were you doing out there Weary..?...I caught a massive dirty barracuda a few weeks back trolling about 20 meter's off Cape Richards ...we were also amazed how fast the bush is taking over the old resort since it went up in smoke..

Havent heard a Townsville weather report from Ron yet..perhaps he is flooded in ... wink

What were you guys doing over there...?...Clearing the track..?

Have you looked up into the Marina from the main channel to the ramp near low tide...I cant believe how silted up its becoming..!..its reverting to the mudflat it once was..

A few mozzies about down here the last few days..but still awesome weather..we had a nice arvo up at Murray falls with quite a few others also cooling off ..a bit of a breeze down the creek causing the natural air con to almost make it too cool..

Yeah, Thursday on wards looks like some of us may get some reasonable showers. Hot spot will be south of Cairns again.

Yes I had that thought today also HF...particularly since some areas havent been mowed in months..then I proceeded to put a rock through the windscreen of the Hilux and drive the mower off a 1.5 metre high culvert...so I'm a bit knocked around tonight and totally over the whole mowing thing..what a doofus..unbelievable..!

Hopefully at least you may be right and we get some decent rain...the models seem to have been a bit more reliable lately....

30.5c here now and humid as hell....looking forward to some cooler weather over this next week.

HF,Looks like most of the showers on the radar are north of Cairns at the moment so the Daintree might be the hotspot this evening...

Got a croc scratching up already. I have noted a loose correlation between early nesting activity and and early o set of the wet. I stress the word loose though bjt it is worth noting that the earliest laying i have ever seen in the 11/11. This is not laying but still very early activity so it will be interesting to see if it pans out this time.

Funny you should say that Brett. I once knew an ancient old fella from up the Daintree who said something similar.

Bit of a change in the atmosphere down here today. A lot more humid than recent days and on the back of a predominantly south easterly. Feels more like the damp a North easterly carries.

Thought we may of seen a shower but it seems to be staying off the coast north of Cairns at the moment. Perhaps in the wee hours?

Models seem to of backed off a little on the rain amounts, but this time of year we will take what we can.

This is what hit home just before the south easterlies Simmo. People in Bundy complain that most storms go around but in two short years i have seen several absolute crackers here. The view from my yard on cup day.

Cheers mate. It was the lack of storms that disappointed me the most about Cairns to be honest. Plenty of rain and the odd blow but weather wise it isn't a good place for excitement that's for sure.

Nothing much to report down this way either..pretty patchy rainfall figures..must have been a nice bit of convergence out the back of innisfail and the Boulders scored 127mm..

Bunyip and Dormant have certainly had some nice falls..and poor old Simmo and his sou'easters ....looks to be all over for us though..

I emptied out 30.2mm here at holloways.
It was after 7pm when the rain started,- just small squalls here & there 'til about 2am when it bucketed down. Couldn't hear the radio,- but all gone about 4am
Mowerman came Wed arvo,- first time in 10 weeks, and I'm sure the grass is at least 2" longer this arvo.

Tried to rain several times overnight, but nothing in the gauge. Still, it was nice to hear on the roof even if faint.

Tonight is *cold* at 23C - I turned the fan off, first time since last year.

Definitely a very cool November so far, a good 2c-2.5c below my last 2 years and no real heat on the cards.

Bugga all rain to report again..no doubt the Daintree got some nice showers though..

Its been pretty close to average down here so far Simmo..yesterday was a cooler change which the forecasts seem to say is set to continue for the next week..the humidity really picked up this past week though which makes it pretty hard going for a 50 year old peasant, field worker like myself.. grin

How about this poor bugga lost in the Kuranda rainforest for 3 nights..shorts and thongs are going to make things pretty miserable for him..

Half way through the month and I am 3.2c below the last couple of years average. Only hot period this month was at the beginning when it was really humid, temps were still below average then though.
Not complaining, I prefer 27c days to 38c days.

Hints of some wet weather else where than just the coastal fringe starting around the 21st. Fingers crossed.

I've got a $9 Nylex that needs to be stabbed into the ground, & then gets splattered with mud. You can see I'm only a dabbler. I did get a $20 one but the top was too tight to get off and the funnel held the excess water instead of running over the top of the measure. Not that it's likely to run over very often.

The lid on my old Pro was too loose after the first few years.
I put 4 tabs of electrical tape just over the edge to tighten it up.
I used the 1mm blade in the 4" angle grinder to cut a small 'V' down to the 25mm mark of the inner tube. Before that the black funnel used to float as the inner tube overflowed into the outer.

Gotta laugh,- I have 3 friends who moved to Cooktown over the last 20 years, and all ended up selling their reef boats 'coz you simply can't use them.
Maybe a 32ft Beneteau Oceanis would be more the go. crazy

Hickory, it wouldn't matter if were a 60 ft boat, someone would still be cleaning up vomit most days...

Cooktown got lucky when GBRMPA were setting up the zoning maps..most reefs off Cooktown escaped Greenzone classification...guess they figured the incessant winds were just as effective as no fishing zones...

I suppose with a blow boat you can still drag a couple of spoons for some spaniards.

Tried to rain a few times last night. Big fat drops that wake you up but about 2 metres apart.

Hopefully some storms this week.

Hopefully some storm action tomorrow, RF?

WA looks like it is going to kick off its season with a developing low in that trough system!

As good as gone now, just a light sprinkle, and it's left us with roughly 30mm.

Very nice, especially since we have water restrictions after one of the town's three bores dried up a few weeks ago.

The radar looking great for a few drops in the next hour or so,- if the escarpment doesn't do it's usual number.

Nothing happened, typical. Small/medium cell to the north of us completely missed us.

Light smattering around Forsayth/Georgetown that might make it if we're lucky.

You still may possibly get something from that line of storms to your south 28..the 512 radar is also showing rain coming from 3 directions converging on the Tully/innisfail area...there may be some good totals for some folks tonight..

Sounds like it was worse up there Simmo, sun barely poked out for 10 mins at little Mulgrave valley.

Looks like a nice one coming into Malanda now. Had a couple of light showers here this evening.

*About to smash you too @28?

Yep. Come and gone, almost. Hit about 9.30pm, now 10pm - just a sprinkle now. A bit of lightning and quite a few rumbles.

Now will have to duck out and see how much rain there was.

That was a fast travelling storm...

Smashing down here currently ..

130 mm in the last hour and a half..

So much for the couple of bags of fert I put out today..its all probably floating out past Dunk island on its way to the reef now..I hate rain this heavy..

Loooks like Cairns and Gordonvale are next in line..

The rain is lightening off here a bit thankfully...

165mm in a couple of hours..

The last time the creek came up this high was December 22nd 2010, about 5 weeks before Cyclone Yasi..we had about 250 mm in a couple of hours that night and 700 mm for the Xmas week....then Yasi a month later...Not nice for a lowland smallholder..

Looking good for Mareeba on the radar soon..

30mm.

Great total Scott. the radar showed it hanging up just above you then pushing up through the Johnston area. We just copped the edge. Bingil Bay would show a fair total as well I would imagine.

Washed out just as it hit Mareeba, think only about 2mm if I'm lucky.
Everything has greened up again already, hopefully it will not be another month till we get a decent fall again.

EDIT: Only 1.2mm

That 28mm last night became 42mm by this morning. After the main stormy part it continued to rain for some time.

So nice to go to sleep to the sound of rain on the roof. In the 7.5 years I've lived here that would be a first. Mostly it's been short storms that move on quickly.

Did I mention we've got water restrictions. One of the towns 3 bores dried up a few weeks ago. Hope it keeps on raining.

Ended up with 195mm overnight..

Over 200 for the day counting a couple of heavy showers during the daytime..Glad you got some 28..Innisfail only got 10 mm...Simmo 1.2mm..wow......Weary 9mm..looking at the radar most would have been expecting more..I think it must have expended itself over our place...strange isnt it SF ,how totals can vary so much over a short distance..you guys got way more than us the night before..Bingil bay recorded 146mm the night before..

No fun being the bullseye Ron...I now have to organize an expedition 1km up through the slippery gorge to my intake to get my water started again..havent been up there since 2011 and I aint getting any younger and I have the flu..really hoping to have enough overcast and showery weather to leave it till friday morning when the boy can come up and help...till then its buckets for domestic water ...creek crossing and the road out needs a bit of work as well..

Yes Scott, such is the way of the weather.

I have noticed in my very short time here, that Bingil Bay gets the line share off a Southerly feed, particularly from the SE. I wonder whether Hinchinbrook Island has some bearing on this as it Sth Mission seems to be tucked in behind it a little more. I haven't really noticed any other patterns yet as the rain in recent times has been predominantly off this feed.

Having said this, I prefer the steady constant rain to the deluge. Especially as my place still has plenty of unlandscaped mud around it😬.

Another 10mm since I emptied the gauge this morning. Not even showing up on the radar🤔

Our creek has not topped the banks either since Yasi, but this is the 2nd time this year that it has come up and over the banks.

She certainly pizzled down for quite a while there last night! we ended up with 215mm for the 24hrs.

All stopped out here, but I will leave the gauge til morning to check. I'm not going to brave the back door which is crawling with mini black stink beetles. No way. Vacuumed enough of them tonight already...
Driving to Cairns tomorrow morning, might leave it a bit later so that everyone else can pack down the mud before me.

Nothing too exciting here, just an extremely noisy green tree frog yelling through the kitchen window. Must have been trying to use the pool as a mating pond. Had to be relocated.

Looks like a bloated version of the one I lobbed over the hill. You wouldn't believe it but about half an hour later it had resurfaced near the pool and resumed its wonderful song in alll its glory. And do you think I could find it again...

According to the Amphibian Research Centre this may be a Dainty Green Tree Frog (Litotria gracilenta), commonly known as a Banana frog,- and a very sick one at that, apparently.
Is it still alive, or did it croak ? (pardon the pun).

I had a bit of a look at the Dainty Green Tree Frog images, and they look quite different? that one has a very blunted face compared with normal tree frogs. The only real reason i noticed it was it started screeching (think of the sound a tree frog makes when it is being eaten by a bird or a snake and you will know what i mean!) when i walked near it. I thought it may have been puffed up because of it's night of "bushiness" on the dam grin but it stayed like that the whole time.

I let it go into the palms and it quickly went on it's way.

I thought that too, with it's blunt face it looked nothing like the Dainty frog, but this morning I had another email back from the Wet Tropics Management Authority saying it was a Dainty Green Tree Frog too.
Now I don't know what to think. Neither mobs knew what ailment it had,- just that it was real crook. Anyway, if it hopped away it may recover all by itself.

I the sent the photos to my resident experts, the taxonomist said it is definitely the Dainty Green Tree Frog, the amphibian disease person said
"Sorry I dont know, looks terrible.

Wonder if its air or fluid? Fluid build up can be due to lots of things like kidney damage. or parasites blocking lymph drainage."

I was talking to a few 'older' locals who have been in the region for 50 years or so. They reckon we are in for a huge wet simply based on us having quite a cool November - they see that as a sign of a big wet! Bring it on!

Cooler than average temps on the east coast at this time of year are more likely in LaNina weather patterns DU. Onshore due to enhanced trades and more associated moisture feed though it does not guarantee a big wet, just increases the odds.

I'm not sure what all this cool November talk is based on.
So far this November, the daily max temps are only -0.1 C down on the 75 year average.
The nightly mins have actually been +0.1 C above the 75 year average.
So negligible, it's hardly of any concern.

Have a look outside cairns hickory. Most locations are 0.7c to 2c below average for November. Only a couple of the locations I looked at were average or just below. I am sure there are a couple that are above but majority of the coast is below average

In Townsville at the moment and it has pretty mucn all browned off again. Poor buggers still missing out on the rain.

Yeah down this way it has been cooler than average particularly at night over the past week or so. BoM's maps show both daytime and night time have been cooler than normal over much of eastern Queensland.

A real tradies nightmare this week HF lol, especially leading up to xmas
I dont recall a November this green in recent times, normally when we take the kids around looking at xmas lights it is fine with often crunchy grass.

I don't either, in the 7.5 years I've lived out here. November 2010 was probably green, we had several showers from August and one fantastic storm on 19 November, so it must've been green at least since that date. grin

We just had a nice short shower producing barely 0.5mm, but at least settling the dust.

Completely overcast with some nice dark clouds to the south east. Hope they don't miss us.

Agreed. I don't care what the historic temps are compared to averages... our DP and humidity have been lower and this November has been pleasant - I've never said or thought that. Usually by now I am getting a bit grumpy to it all.

Lets hope that December follows the trend with the extra winds from the Sth.

33mm this morning was a nice way to wake up. Although...... I will need to muck out 48 post holes for the retaining wall. I can handle that. Sitting on the deck with a nice cup of coffee watching the rain come down is a great way to start the day.

Bam, just like that the humidity rolls in. It is bloody steamy today. Currently 29c, 75% humidity, DP 24c.
Looks like down south will be stealing all our rain. Some massive falls forecast for Victoria.

A very pleasant morning.
Cicadas singing away, not earsplitting thankfully, yet.

Grass is green, birds chirping.

31 degrees on the deck and 48% humidity
28 degrees inside and 53% humidity
Occasional light breeze

Wowza, it is really hot and humid now. I was outside melting while doing some work in the garden so thought I would check the WS. Currently 34c with a DP of 25c. I now know why. I feel like I am back in the Valley.

EDIT: Surely we have got to get a storm. lol

Geez ya lucky thing Scott. Only 29 degrees.
35 degrees here and humidity 37%.

Hottest part of the day, when the house temp catches up the outside temp and stays there while outside gets cooler. Great in winter, but not summer.

Mmmm, lovely bit of rain. Bit of thunder too. Might get 4 or 5mm out of this.

Good old Sky Muster dropped out immediately but back on now. Our trusty newly upgraded 4G stepped in with no trouble.

20 minutes or so later....11mm in the gauge.
Bit of decent lightning and thunder around too.
