Certainly seems like that at the moment, Perth getting a 5-6 day spate of 30+ days, unusual for early November over there, and low pressure rain and cool conditions over here.
The high pressures though in the Bight are most prominent in Feb-March, and very hot conditions prevail, part of the reason of the strong seasonal lag over there.
Also the turning to more humid weather over here, most of the time, in late summer and March.

Like Dave we got a chilly morning here with 9.2C. But today is a crystal clear and beautiful day with those SW winds which are tending southerly. Temp is about 21C here with 32% humidity.

A bright, sunny day with brisk Southerlies in Sydney, chilly for a sunny day at this time of year with. OH, warm in a Southerly, almost made it to 22, while the Airport failed to make 20. The outer West got to 23-24. 'Apparent temperatures' at 3:00PM were 12.4 at OH and 9.9 at the Airport.

We're under quite a cool air mass at the moment, with 850 temps of 4-5 today, predicted at be 2-3 tomorrow and not to rise above 6-7 until early next week (GFS). There's a cold Southern Maritime air over the Tasman, spilling onto the coast. I would expect the average for this time of year would be about 10-11. It won't reach those levels again until around Tuesday next week. Heat haters can rest easy for the time being.

-------

It's peak Jacaranda in sydney. The recent rain knocked them about a bit but they're still looking good.

Hoping the chill will be gone in time for my trip to Sydney and the NSW Blue Mountains in just under a fortnight's time! Would love to be basking in gloriously warm sunshine and perhaps have some storms as well. smile

Thought it was wind but checked radar and it's raining!

I like it when we get rain at night like this and then tomorrow during the day it should be fine and maybe with some sunshine.

Hey Kino, today was an absolutely glorious day!!
Yeh sure, it was a bit cool, but the sky was deep blue for the most part, humidity was non-existent, and the sun felt warm. An almost perfect spring day. It was just a tad windy but that was nice as it took the sting out of the sun. We may be almost into summer, yes. The heat will come and you'll get your fix eventually, and many months of it as well. I'm loving these late spring temps.

Lovely picture Steve of the Jacaranda.
They certainly have been stunning this year, but I seem to remember that I think that every year!! I've seen many glorious examples of them over all parts of Sydney during the past 2 or so weeks, particularly in Parramatta Park beside the river.

ASF - hope you enjoy your trip to Sydney and surrounds and you get some warmth and possibly some decent storms. Looking forward to your reports.

I like it too mate.

Geez, I just checked the radar and there's plenty of showers about. I hope we score some as well.

Quite heavy rain overnight, although only 5.2mm reported at the airport since 9am yesterday.
This is obviously way out compared to town, and one of the problems with moving a weather station 10Ks away.

Surprisingly heavy falls around Newcastle and the Central Coast last night, up to 40mm. In the Hunter, it was more than for the 'event' just finished, which delivered about 20mm in exchange for a sunless weeeknd.

There's more going on that the usual stuff blowing in off the Tasman in a Southerly. There's nothing in the surface chart that would explain it. Whatever it was, the forecasters seemed to have missed it. The showers are still happening on the coast from about Lake Macquarie Northwards.

Little or no rain around Sydney, it's cool and partly cloudy here.

5mm here in official gauges with some decent showers overnight - more at my place, coastal strip always does better with those southerly stream showers.

Pretty stable, mild boring weather for the next 7 days, with EC & GFS then predicting another period of unstable weather with a deep trough - ED does like a retrograding Tasman Low over the mid north coast.

I'm watching what that plume of tropical moisture currently pouring down central Australia does. Hard to think that will just slip by without any local influences.

It looked nice coming up the coast late last night Dave, but it just thinned out to a bit of drizzle....so 40mm further east equalled wet grass here. There is a .5mm in the gauge between the storm event and last night. Frustrating.

I hear you GR.

Those Watagans a bit of a rain shield for you.

DaveM The watagans sure are a rain shield for us,for coastal rain to come in the wind has to be Easterly.

It's been 30 years since but the sight and most especially, smell, of the Jacaranda flowers reminds me of final exams at Macquarie University.
The campus grounds were a spectacular sight every November.

yeah usually dumps its load at Cooranbong and Martinsville.....which as the crow flies are not that far away.

A good wet long fetch SE'r will easily push showers through and right up across broken back and on towards singleton, but shallow coast events fizzle about 10ks east. The watagans are really only hills....but they certainly play a role here in marginal setups.

As stormy says easterlies are good, but whilst black northeasters in theory should be awesome here, the geography of port stephens means that the showers that develop to hit this area run over land for a long way compared to further south (where they develop below the port stephens penninsula). So only in very unstable setups does the a NE feed pay.

We win in ECL's. Long fetch easterly events and storms with SW'erly shear. Other conditions including NW feeds can certainly pay nicely, but the top 3 are those above and perhaps a strategically positioned upper cold pool event....(the cold pools need to sit over NW Victoria for us to get the storm bands...or up near bourke to create unstable unshore flow for heavy showers from the east)

Few showers starting to appear on radar to our south near Jervis Bay associated with what appears to be another surge of southerlies hugging the coast - we will see if they make it.

I have always felt that Cessnock is a hot dry town - COMPARATIVE to other places not so far away.

Cessnock feels to me as a town that has a climate I would expect much further inland.

Yet just nearby it can be so very different, just have to wander over Freemans to see the diff.

its not that bad really. It actually can collect quite a lot of storms coming off broken back and its further away from the rain shadow of the watagans so showers pass in front of the watagans (to the north) and collect Cessnock. It would arguably get better rain than us.....
dont know what the figures look like compared to nearby stations..
