Yep been speaking to family back home in Portland was lots of smoke around earlier but gone now. A number of smaller fires around the state today. With this wind i expect a lot of drying is occurring today

For the first real time this season we will possibly see some dangerous fire conditions coming into next week. Low Humidity and High Temps with possible gusty winds to affect South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Gusty winds more likely just ahead of the cool change to impact mid-next week. Just checked the grassland curing maps from same time last year and we are a lot drier and that does not look to good heading into a complex set up of VERY HOT weather with a possible gusty cool change later that week. All eyes I can safley say will be on fire apps and VicEmergency website that is for sure.

Couple of fires around today including a few starts up in the high country from lightning - also are large fire involving tires at Strathmerton.

TFB for Mallee Tommorrow

Also as a type this just had a make tankers 20 in CURRAN RD TOWAN - North of Swan Hill - 300 acre wheat crop fire. Quiet surprising considering the time but still around 30 up there

Edit now make tankers 30 - 400 acres going strong

NSW resouces now responding also. Crews on the ground just said "Fire going like hell, jumping numerous roads, multiple properties under threat."

Now make tankers 40

Update: 500 acres, multiple fronts

Strike Teams forming up now

This Watch & Act message is for Chinkapook, Cocamba, Miralie, Nyah West, Nyrraby, Towan, Wood Wood, Yarraby.

There is a grassfire at YARRABY ROAD, NYAH WEST that is not yet under control
This grassfire is travelling in a westerly direction
Don't wait, leaving now is the safest option - conditions may change and get worse very quickly. Emergency Services may not be able to help you if you decide to stay.

Fire now contained - 900-1000 acres burnt - Crews will be blacking out all night. Fire held at Chinkapook-Nyah West Road, conditions have improved. Going to need a lot of work to keep it from flaring up tomorrow. Sounds like it was caused by a header like most fires up that way.

Got strike teams going to the fire on the SOUTH GIPPSLAND HWY WOODSIDE, right near the Omega Tower

Watch and Act in place:

This Watch & Act message is for Woodside.

There is a grassfire at SOUTH GIPPSLAND HWY, WOODSIDE that is not yet under control
This grassfire is travelling in a northerly direction towards the South Gippsland Highway.
Firefighters have been able to stop the spread of the fire. Staying close to shelter is the safest option, in case conditions change again suddenly. Continue to stay informed and monitor conditions.

The rain, especially up north, will have very little effect on grasslands, you have to remember that curing is a seasonal occurrence. Once it reaches a point it wont go back until the next season. Also up north it is so dry all that rain would have been soaked right up. The biggest effect of the rain will be on slowing down the process in other areas but with another warm/hot week I doubt it will have much impact at all.

A couple of years back I remember seeing a grass fire on a hot windy day burming very well despite the fact we had 50mm 2 days before and the paddock still had standing water in it as the grass had already died of (this was middle January)

Of course the effect of the rain in forested areas especially in ground/leaf matter will be much greater.

Large fire in Bunyips - I was flying out your way today and saw it blow up, leaving Moorabbin it was a small smoke column, by the time we were passing it it was a very large plume, was even more coming back about and hour ago.

A couple (so far) lightning starts to north of Bairnsdale and NE of Orbost. Expect more but conditions are not conducive to any rapid spread.

And a new one about 20km north of Samboz. Again, expect more.
