A cloudy, muggy day with sunny breaks early and late.

Those cells SW of Sydney late this afternoon delivered up to 22mm in the Appin area and 7mm at Campbelltown.

There's now a lightning-active cell, nearly stationary, just off Kiama. It should be giving a good lightshow to the Illawarra coast.

NAEFS has a cool signal across much of Australia, either side of latitude 30 degrees South. It's the first time I've seen such a widespread cool signal over Australia for a while. It's been nearly always warm this year:

To me, that suggests widespread cloud and rain over inland Australia. This is also my interpretation of what is being shown in the later parts of the models, e.g. the second week of GFS.

Note: red = warm, blue = cool, maroon = average. I can't see a definition for white. I assume it means 'mixed', on average, close to average.

I also note that while the Tasman sea has looked like a hot bath on this map all year, the (relative) warmth seems to have shifted South.

An average two days storm chasing. 400kms on Sunday, and a 900km marathon yesterday - getting to old at 60 for the 900kms.

Sunday -
Storms struggled initially out near Crookwell. Dewpoints were rather depressed at around 12C. Storms began to fire around 1.30pm.

Encountered a small storm near Crookwell with some close lightning and hail.

On way home a more severe cell at Marulan, with larger hail and flash flooding rain. Numerous close CG's, downside is not much on camera. The Hume Hwy was a mess with cars pulled over or doing 20kms per hour. There are always a few amateur "safety cars" in these conditions - drivers who think that hazard lights = I can drive in the fast lane at 30kph.

Monday -
Headed straight for sunshine, which was Cootamundra. Worrying sky for most of morning and even into afternoon with elevated morning convection lingering - high flat, almost mid level bases with turrets, a couple of which became lightning active.

It was not until 2pm until the surface became unstable and true storms started to fire. Hooked onto a severe cell near Junee, it had no road options, but was nice to watch for a while from about 20kms away on a dirt road with no cars or unnatural sound. Constant anvil thunder - no breaks, but little in way of CG's. It threw out a couple of microbursts.

Another cell in the background started to get going around 4pm and was located near Narrandera. I hoped that it would head East like the Junee cell, but instead it started to constantly build on the N/NW flank. I came within around 30kms of it near Temora, by now it was 6pm and with work on Tuesday I had no choice but to turn my back on it. It was still firing bolts out near Condobolin when I got home around 10pm, so was time wise unfeasible anyway. As a bonus on the way home however Marulan fired again with some lightning from a cell that exploded out near Nerriga. With the poor shear it grew on outflow boundaries to the NW.

From my window at Darling Harbour looking North clouds looking like they're getting some height and getting chunky.

Maybe, just maybe some showers later on?

You're not wrong, they look about as good as they get without showing on radar. It's not in the forecast but fingers are crossed

Mt's Keira & Kembla were covered in cloud this morning - showing the LFC level is low & atmosphere is unstable.

Your bonus was my loss haha. I thought Jerrawangala lookout halfway between nowra and nerriga would get me a view until the storm skirted 10km to my west never to be seen again. Tianjara lookout would have been in the rain and I was low on fuel so cut my losses and headed home.

Nope, I did 900km yesterday. At 60 years old I do not enjoy that long a drive any more.

Like you I thought that it would at least move NE a bit more, at one stage just on twilight the back end updraft tower was flashing every 2-3 secs. I really thought it would do the job, but Marulan was its last gasp.

At 59 I know what you mean. I can do the drive but recovery takes much longer than before grin

Some cloud popping up out here - nothing exciting but cloud will increase quickly this arvo I suspect.

Couple of large cells going up around Orange/Parkes direction.

Look quite substantial big Cauliflower shapes. Building quickly.

Others to my north & east getting dark bums.

The cicadas have arrived, so it's officially Summer (sort of). Heard them for the first time this season at dusk yesterday evening and they've just started up now.

---------

Mostly sunny in Sydney, warm and humid with an E-SE breeze and scattered low cloud. There is some structure visible in the distance.

Steve,

I heard my first cicadas 2 weeks ago. They must be migrating east. grin

I can see those cells in the western metro from here. They're only small but look to be quite localised and heavy. I haven't heard any thunder yet. Lightning tracker confirms.

Lots of small scattered and localised showers popping up across the basin and out to sea. Some briefly reaching moderate status according to the echos.

Would be interesting to see the rain rate under one of those as toward sunset the clouds seemed to be gaining height and becoming chunky. Most of the afternoon this feature escaped from the sky after and was replaced with a much flatter scuddy type of cloud and then toward sunset it was on the up again!

Hopefully some showers hit this area even if for some short lived excitement! smile
