Shouldn't these new tropical threads be entitled "Wet Season" rather than "Build Up" now it's December?

Nice!

I should pull my finger out and get another one - Yasi 'borrowed' mine up at Bilyana and never returned it...

Not sure about the wind direction - there is a re-calibration process for the southern hemisphere - pretty sure I followed it but my direction seems to be out compared to other sites

Just keep tinkering - that's one of the best parts of getting a weather station. smile

Keep an eye on the official obs, and other stations in the area and eventually you'll get it pretty accurate.

Right, sorted out the wind direction problem - there is a calibration instruction in the manual that states that it needs to be reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, but only if you reverse the mounting direction, which I didn't - so the solar collector is on the southern side, I doubt it will be an issue in North QLD smile and it is 3.8 m above ground level

For most of the year the Sun is actually north of us. At midday in midwinter it is only at an elevation of approx. 47deg so for a lot of the year with it facing south I don't think the solar panel will be getting any direct sunlight. That unit has definitely been designed for mid/high latitudes with the solar panel at such a steep angle to the horizontal.

I'll see how it goes over the winter months, relatively easy to realign, just need to get on the roof

Been out past the Towers most of the day. Slow start to the day but come late arvo it really took off. Had the most active storm i have seen in years right on dusk. Was amazing to watch. All gone to rain now and surprise! A 30km gap tight over Tsv.

Off my weather station. AFAIK the airport is exposed to a sea breeze where as we in the western burbs are not, hence the temperature difference.

I did notice that the other weather stations around me on Wunderground were also recording upper 30ís on Tuesday

Both of my weather stations recorded less than 34 outside and I am in Cranbrook near the river, you must have more urban heat in your area.

The 2 in Cranbrook I can see are reading around 30 at the moment and so is mine but 3 in Rosslea are reading over 32.

Not sure where the BOM put the time, but if you go to the observations section for Townsville on Weatherzone (you'll need to sign up) there is an interactive graph showing the temperature over the last 24hrs and if you hover over it, it will show the temp and time for the reading.

For the record, the AP reached 34.7C at 12:20pm on the day in question.

While youíre on the topic of weather stations, I need to find one for roughly around the $100 mark. I know itís entry level $$$ we are talking about but I need to offer suggestions for my secret Santa present.

I see the Holman and Instrument Choice offerings, and one from Maxkon. Whatís peopleís thoughts on those brands?

Sick of the heat with no rain. Seems weather is a month behind. Had October winds in November and now November weather in December.

Put the model numbers into google with "review" and you should get the info you need.

There's a severe storm warning out for Townsville, Woodstock and Rollingstone. Received notification via Early Warning Email. My first reaction was "yeah right!". We'll see.

That's good. Should be more of it. The number of times these warnings amount to nothing one can't be blamed for being sceptical.

had some coastal showers overnight, very coastal on the ESE flow. if only it changed just that little bit for once. monsoon not showing signs of kicking in until second week of January, lean pickings until then. Not going to be the worst Decemeber on record, but going to be one of the worst.

When the monsoon does come, it will be with a fury because all this heat has to fuel something.

4/5 of the past years have been below average, the only exception being 2014 thanks to that April TC which brought 200mm of rain in a night, i was only 30mm above average that year.

That is over 80% of your (Townsville) median rainfall for the year (1069 mm).

that doesn't get us out of drought or fill our water supply. 5th consecutive year below average.

Unfortunately for you that is how averages work. Townsville has more years below average than above. It is the big wets that prop it up and they are few and far between. Not the ideal location to pack in 200,000 people.

That does not mean it is good rain at all.

Whats Bunderberg had? 3 flood events in 6 months? Im extremely jealous and frustrated at the same time that the Bowen to Cairns region continues to miss out on everything. Im sure you can understsnd having lived in these parts before.

Its actually funny seeing people from SE QLD say they always miss out, I bet everyones lawns are green down there.

You know shower events dont fill dams CF. We cant even water our dead lawns properly.

Regardless, its still again another year below average with no inflows into a poorly managed Dam.

We need real rain. Fast. 36C here at the moment.

It will rain again. I saw this in the early 90's in Townsville. Dry as a chip.

Not in Townsville, but in southern states they can.

You probably don't want to hear that we got another 80mm + overnight.

Now I have been known to go out on a limb and make predictions but this wet is going to bring stuff all by my reckoning. And yes the airport recorded that amount but no where near that amount fell in the catchment area.

Now in regards to rainfall. In tsv, what your getting is normal for tsv, as someone said its the big wets occasionally that bring the average up but in all honesty normal rainfall in tsv is around 800 in a normal year. The dam maybe poorly managed but the biggest issue is having a large town in that area. The natural resources cant supply the people there and the stupid council are building more houses. That area is only any good for a small town not a big city. The watee problems are only gonna get worse, with the occasional good year when a cyclone comes through.
