Pretty decent fire there Seabreeze, looks like it's still at Watch & Act status at time of writing.

NF: Yeah it's the former (wind speeds around the 600hpa level in our part of the world for typical size storms) that are the main factor in storm forward speed.
While strong midlevel winds often correlate with strong shear, there can be times when midlevel winds aren't that strong but due to low level winds coming from an opposing direction, it increases the shear between the two levels. Strong shear increases the likelihood of rotating persistent updrafts that are a feature of supercells as well as separating the downdraft from the updraft.

I follow someone on social media who lives at port. The smoke cloud resembles what California is currently experiencing. Glad we don't have Santa Ana winds here

Yeah, some spectacular images coming from those in Port Macquarie. Thankfully it's burning in a fairly unpopulated area (mostly National Park).

Expecting tomorrow night's southerly change here to be accompanied by the smell of smoke.

The fire's burnt area increased from 3641 hectares on the 5:40pm update to 6008 hectares on the 10:30pm update.

Damn decent fire! my sister is working down around Port at the moment and having to drive from SWR there each day, she said that the number of helicopters and stuff dumping water on it has been crazy.

Faint glimmer of hope appearing in the 7-14 day timeframe from now.

Hoping it isn't accompanied by southeasterly winds or weak shear (I haven't checked):

Looks like another 2 weeks before decent storms/rains. Good wet signal for January though.

Another stupid block setting up in the Tasman Sea only high is much closer to us rather than over NZ this time. Extremely strong troughing stuck east of NZ for whatever reason looks to be the main culprit this time?

Just looking through some modeling and its a long way off in weather terms, Thursday the 21st looks like a very mild chance of some weak storms at this stage. But a long way off and everything can change as we all know. Other than that it is hot and muggy weather, BLAH! Hate it. I will be keeping an eye on it and see how or if anything does give us some excitement in life.

Its incredible ya get troughs that dip down into south east Oz or out in the coral sea that linger for days on end but when they arrive up here they're gone the next day only to be replaced by another annoying ridge.Think I might head out west in the leadup to the next trough that passes through might get to see storms for more than one day.

Judging by the quick check I made of the Brisbane Groundhog Day forecast yesterday, Iím glad I went to Japan for a break... max temps of 9C here in Tokyo with blustery winds making it feel much colder, the hotel swimming pool partially froze over yesterday and blizzard, gale and avalanche warnings along the west coast and mountains in recent days with up to a metre of snow in some places.

Still looking on track for the last graph you posted Ken. End of next week might see the return of some instability.

Yeah there was a huge dump of sea-effect snowfall in Niigata recently, definitely a stark contrast to the weather here.

Weather in SEQ rather dull at present and continuing for a while. A breather break probably needed as what comes ahead is big ?unknown??
Nice to see grass green this time of year. There are many years where leadin to Christmas is depressingly dry.
What comes will come.

Enjoy your time OS Ken

Enjoy your stay Ken, just no Bombies/cannon balls into the pool, you might end up with a slight concussion.
