Interesting - it looks like a number of slow-moving cells popped up in Sydney's West, with what looked like fairly heavy rain, although the Terry Hills radar probably exaggerated them. There doesn't appear to have been any lightning and the cells now look like they're rapidly evaporating.

It's been mostly cloudy here, warm and humid with some sunny breaks. There were a few spots of rain, but probably not enough to register.

EDIT: I see there was an isolated Hervey fall of 14mm at Northmead. Maybe other heavy falls haven't yet been reported.

We got a downpour for about 15 mins at 11:45am, around 12mm in the gauge from that one.

It will be interesting to see what happens in winter.

I ran my eye down the numbers for December. The average minimum at the new site is tracking 0.3 degrees cooler, while maxima average 0.6 degrees higher. The biggest differences seem to be days with NE-SE winds, although it's early days yet. I note that November maxima at the new site were a full degree warmer than the old. November was dominated by the Easterly quadrant.

Some decent heavy showers here today - one a 3am and then another around 9'ish as a slow moving ne'erly stream shower moved across. Would be some decent falls along the escarpment too.

Same here Kino in the Hills District. Some very heavy showers actually.
I checked the radar at the time and I don't think it was over reading at all, as previously mentioned above.
I was surprised how localised and heavy they were as I did a fair bit of driving around the place today.
Some areas had torrents of water running down the gutters, and just two km's away the roads were dry.

Xmas Eve now upgraded to 40C, not that much of a surprise though, esp after the last barrage of heat.
At least today has been mild, and Xmas Day should be ok.

Is there something that explains what’s happening with the Obs Hill site? Is it being changed permanently at some stage? Why? How far away is the new site?

A beautiful day today, clear skies, warm breezes and a few fluffy white clouds. There is some connective-looking development to the West but it probably won't come to anything today.

======

Further to the discussion on the OH site, I had a look on Google. The old site I s somwhat sheltered to the South and West by walls and buildings, as well as trees. There is a tall tree a little to the North, but the site is completely open to the North East. The BOM tends to overshoot its forecast by a degree or two on days like today. I think that today's max will be the 27.5 recordedat 11:41.

The new site is a bit more enclosed, as Blair Trewin says, a bit more sheltered from the NE. I wouldn't be surprised if the new site more closely matches forecasts on days like today (today's forecast max 29).

Thanks Kizz. I found some details about location but not about why they need/want to move and when the official obs switch over (if they will).

Hot and steamy today, 20-34C range,, still 28.4c outside, before we venture into the 40 range again tomorrow.
This will be the 4th time this month, although we have the obligatory 3 days of missing data as well, to throw things out.

The old site's going to be built out by an expansion/redevelopment of the Fort Street Public School (at least it's desperately needed public infrastructure, and not developers). Timing depends on when the building starts.

I wanted to wish everyone a happy Christmas and a great 2018.

Approximately what is the timing of this southerly change this afternoon due in at Sydney?

Going by the national weather radar, the front appears to be stretched out from north of Adelaide to Bega in SE NSW. There doesn't appear to be any really strong winds behind the front atm, so unless it gets a real move on I wouldn't expect the change to arrive in Sydney any earlier than 6pm.

According to this, about 6:00 - 7:00PM, which is consistent with the BOM forecast: Ventusky

Access and GFS seem to be going for mid afternoon for the winds turning SE, but that might not be the main change.

------

Classic Summer morning today, clear skies, warm, light NW'ers. Too bad the Christmas and Boxing Day weather won't be too crash hot for the coast, but still doesn't look too bad. Everyone have a great Christmas whatever the weather and may 2018 bring the weather you want: storms, snow, rain when and where needed. The heat and cold lovers will have to take turns.

Same to you Eddy and to all our fellow posters here.
Are you around for a beer over the new year period?

It's already reached 38 deg's at several Sydney sites by 11.30 am. Not bad and should get to the forecast highs or possibly even beat them as there looks be very little cloud cover over the next few hours.

Okie Dokie Eddy. I'll send you a PM.
Good to see you back in here.
36.8 here. Stifling outside but not too bad inside in front of a fan. The air-con will probably go on later.
