Agree NF and i don't even know why BOM put brisbane in the STW at all. Storms to our west moving north, storms south west are moving east so bucklies really. Hope i am wrong but doesn't look good for anything in Brissy today. Hopefully my earlier forecast is wrong

We just had rain and hail and for 3 minutes a really loud sound like a train coming with crazy ass wind that knocked doiwn my outside furniture - then it stopped suddenly. I am 10 minutes from Atkinsons Dam.

Disappointing for Brisbane and coastal areas today, but I can't say I'm surprised.

The dryline/surface trough is running N-S just east of Kingaroy and Toowoomba. Obviously it's too dry to the west of it for storms, but further east along the coastal plains there's capping along the coast from the SE'ly. In the middle along the ranges where the convergence is occurring is that sweet spot.

At first I was wondering why storms seemed to be deviating from the NE'ly steering flow (700-600). They are traveling north, even north-west, when with the high cloud tops I thought they should be NE'ly or even E'ly (if they are right-movers). I think what's happening is that storms tried to move NE initially but that put them into unfavourable conditions so only the western parts stayed severe, dragging them further to the north/north-west.

We had some small grape sized hail at home (reported to me by my wife), and a couple of mm rain from that cell. We were just on the edge of it at RD.

a few rumbles here, not flashes and some light drizzle - how amazing is nature tho for these storms to flare up like they did and then just die as quick as they formed ........

Some very gusty winds from that cell & thats all. Amazing cloud structure, low flying fluff racing around swirling, solid emerald green at one stage just to our SE, dont mind missing that one thanks.

I'm at Regency Downs (bounds Hatton Vale). We were just under the western side of the cell, but I'm at work up the hill in Toowoomba.

The wife reported tremendous wind and noise, plus the hail I mentioned above. Apparently the kids were frightened out of their skin, loudest storm she's ever heard.

I'll get the wind data off the Davis when I get home in a couple of hours.

I'm at Rifle Range which is also close to Hattonvale. The hail here was only about 2cm but the wind and rain were crazy.

Convection tried to get going along the coast here this morning but seemed to get about as high as 3-4kms in height and then collapse. Only enough to produce the odd shower here and there. It then cleared off for a sunny afternoon, with some cloud redeveloping in the past 15-20 minutes.

Looked at the local news this morning to see this (occurred on New Years Day, from the same storm that brought large to giant hail to Kempsey/Nambucca)
Quote:
Storm batters rehabilitation centre in Kinchela
Tom Bushnell, January 2 2018 - 5:00PM

A powerful storm ripped the roof off the administration building of drug rehabilitation facility, Benelong’s Haven, at Kinchela yesterday afternoon.
A balcony, which previously adjoined the structure, was also destroyed.
It is believed the administration block also contained a kitchen and common room.
Fortunately, nobody was injured as Benelong’s Haven closed down recently and is largely unoccupied with the exception of a caretaker and his wife, who were in another building.
Vic Henderson of South West Rocks’ SES told the Argus when his team arrived at the scene, they found the roof 100 to 150 feet away laying on a private road which exists on the property and builders’ foil, insulation and custom orb scattered everywhere.
With electrical wires dangerously exposed their primary concern was to cut the power to the administration building, which proved rather difficult.
After being given a bucket of keys by the caretaker, the team were unable to locate the one it needed to unlock the appropriate power box, so decided to turn off the electricity to the entire site via the main line.
Once the immediate threat to lives was nullified, the crew began work to limit further damage and protect the remaining assets.
“The building was too large to tarp entirely, so we collected electrical equipment such as computers and printers, and placed them in a dry room,” said Mr Henderson.
“Then covered as much furniture as possible.
“It was a pretty major and heavy cell that came through.
“The only way the roofing iron could have been mangled so much was for a super cell event to have occurred.”
South West Rocks’ SES workers have been flat out since 11pm Christmas Eve but are hoping a fine weekend ahead will offer some relief.

Was looking at ACCESS last night at the dewpoint on the surface and you could see the moisture get wiped out with a SE'ly suge. Can see out side it has fined up well and truly. Hopefully the tropics get going in the next couple of weeks.

If the tropics get going we're more likely to be ridged out of any action than get any monsoonal/tropical activity. I'm actually hoping the tropics stay quiet so the mid-latitude troughs + high SSTs in the Tasman keep the storms going.
