I haven't been missed either now. Ground is very wet outside but apparantly it's just going to be cloudy tonight. Fail BOM.

Fairly noticeably heavy drizzle tonight. Even today.

Kind of frustrating the events have been there for regular falls but the triggers haven't been strong enough. Not sure if it's the current weak La Niņa state of or what.

However, in saying that there's been regular rain of some kind but no major totals which is leaving me perplexed.

It's a warm, sunny sea breezy day in Sydney today. We had a bit of rain overnight, I noticed that roads and pavements were wet around 9:00PM and it looks as though OH picked up a few mm in one of those chunky looking showers that drifted in before dawn.

Looks like OH will finish December with average minima and maxima both about 2 degrees above average. Rainfall looks likely to finish at about 50-60% of average. Further inland, Bankstown looks like finishing at about +2 & +3 for Min and Max, about 70% of its average rainfall.

It's an interesting thing; we will never know what may have happened without La Ninas influence (albeit weak as yet) but I suspect it'd have been drier and cooler with days of that horrid stratocu and regular weak se'erlies.

Unlike the previous couple of days, the Sun smiled on Sydney today. Here's the visible satellite view early this afternoon:

The last few days reminds me of summer in the 80's. Early chunky cloud cover, warm and humid burning off to a beautiful sunny humid day with low cloud along the escarpment all day. Would have been a few mm along here today despite what radar says.

Loads of new sites appearing in the Upper and Lower Western on the WZ obs page lately. Appears to be rainfall only for these newcomers.

I'm not seeing them on BoM's obs page.

What's going on? I'm now scared and confused.

I am not running you down mate,Kizz, that pic of your rain gauge, any rain coming from the fence side wont go in the gauge mate, you need to put it above the fence.

There might even be some kookaburra urine in there...

The picture is deceptive. It is more than three times further away from the fence than the height of the fence above the gauge.

Cannot verify kookaburra "traces" but the spiders love that gauge.

That would be right - NSW Agriculture (or whatever it calls itself these days) is funding an improved station network in western NSW - the various new AWSs are also part of this project. Have forgotten how many rainfall sites are involved but I think it might be something like 20-30?

Since they're rainfall-only they won't show up on the current observations page, but they should be feeding data to http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/ (as well as being incorporated into the daily maps and analyses).

Incidentally, one of the conditions of the funding is that the stations are within NSW, even though there are a few cases where the data gaps would be more effectively filled by a site on the other side of the border. The Smithville AWS is less than 100m from the SA border. (Not that this is the first time that there's been a site close to the NSW border - the aptly-named Tomewin (Border Gate) site which holds the record for the third-highest monthly rainfall total in NSW is inside the NSW-Queensland border by only a couple of metres).

Cheers Blair.
I noticed that they are now included in the bureau's list of stations in their IDCJMC0014 product page.

In fact, not only do these stations get their own BoM ID, they also get a WMO ID. Something which most stations in Australia don't seem to have (WMO ID).

Great to see all these extra sites.
Still hoping to see one in the North Shore / Hills district of Sydney one day. The WZ wundermap (and to a lesser extent WOW) is a great proxy but you can never be sure of the quality control.

Yes!
The Bureau has boosted the forecast rainfall totals for Saturday.

There's a bit of buildup visible to the West and South here too, although there's nothing on the radar or satellite.

Penrith has passed 40 for the 5th time this month. The car thermometer was showing 34 near Lindfield a little while ago, which is consistent with maxima at the Airport, Olympic Park and Canterbury.

Same as the last 5 events......models show rain onto the doorstep of the event then wipe it out. Went from 50mm falls yesterday over the Hunter to basically nothing again in the last 3 runs. Models never used to be this bad so close to events.....but all I know is that once it has been deleted in the models, that is exactly what has played out in reality.

Cant see any improvement in long term GFS either. Just the same junk ridge, weak change pattern. It looks like it will see out another season.

If we dont see upper cold pools and coastal low pressure come into play soon its a la nada summer on the cards and we will be looking to autumn.

Sydney Metro went from 10-20 mm's yesterday to 5-10 mm's today, for tomorrow. Same deal here mate.
I was hoping for a decent drop tomorrow just for the vegie garden. It always does better with mother natures water than it does with my fluoride induced tap water.

2017 has been a bit of a curate's egg for rainfall - good in parts.
Here are a few stats for Sydney OH, guessing 8 mm until 9:00 Sunday and 3mm for the missing two days in October (as per the Botanical Gardens).

Total rainfall: 1,074mm, 88% of average.

So, slightly below average. However, month by month figures tell a different story.

Percentages of monthly averages:
Code:
JA FE MA AP MA JU JL AU SE OC NO DE
47 174 250 64 25 131 13 30 0 82 73 59

So two very wet months, one wet month, three very dry months and the remainder slightly to moderately below average.

Percentage of yearly total by month:
Code:
JA FE MA AP MA JU JL AU SE OC NO DE
 5 19 30 8 3 16 1 2 0 6 6 4

So what we see is:
1. Nearly half (49%) of 2017's rainfall fell in two calendar months (February, March)
2. Nearly two thirds (65%) fell in three (non contiguous) months February, March and June.
3. July to September was very dry, with only 3% of 2017's rain falling in those three months combined.
4. 81% of 2017's rain fell in the first half of the year.
