lets hope 2018 breaks our run of poor years.

early hope with a lot of moisture from a trough next week. got to be lucky to be under a storm though.

Looks promising for us. Not so much for the ville. But thats just the norm for you giuys. We need a cyclone for youse to have any decent rain.

A bit more like genuine summer weather now: Coastal ridge has broken down, temperature and dew point up. Let's see if any decent convection is forthcoming...

Nice storms here this morning, some sporadic heavy falls up to 68mm but most of the city received 2-25mm.

24mm at Castle Mayhem (My house) at Rasmussen. Lovely cracks of thunder and lightning as well. Wife has already started the aircons because it's so humid. Can't say I disagree with her.

34.5 mm at the Willows end of Kirwan, the dog went crazy with the thunder, but then he chases F18's too - not sure what he'd do if he caught one...

btw it was and isolated cell, most of the city got 5mm.

surprised this line is dying as it approaches the coast, the models showing massive cape levels close to the coast.

Yeah I saw the massive instability. Just not our day. Very weird but not unusual. Although could rebuild up. Never know.

Absolutely loved the light show last night, very impressive indeed. There was a couple of particularly close bolts that gave the house a good shaking. The wind before the storm(s) was such a relief, like someone had turned an aircon on lol. I note that there was a 61km/h gust at the AP just after 6pm when one line moved through.

Please let there be more today!

yes i was very lucky mate, thank you. sadly the rest of the district didnt do as well as me, still lacking a decent rain event.

we were forecast to get 20-30mm tomorrow, bom has scaled that back to 1-3mm tomorrow. still hopeful of some storms as the trough moves thru friday night, but again, we will have to be lucky

Good to see some colour on your radar for a change, looks to continue until tonight before another northward building ridge blasts it all away.

Amazing these little thunderstorms popping up here and there. Says 21.3mm on my rain gauge but havnt check for frogs in side it...usually screws with my totals if my friendly brown tree frog has gone back home after the last time I removed him. 21.3mm seems reserved compared to actually rain that fell. Lucky I have a manual gauge as back up. Ill check later

had another 25mm in kirwan until 9am.

shame the flow has shifted NW, if that rain out to sea just off the coast moved south the whole area would be getting 50mm this arvo.

I've been saying it ever since they replaced the radar, but is accuracy is way off up here. its showing a green/yellow band north - north west of Ingham. I've just driven the road that goes directly under this band and its barley worth having the wipers on. It always seems to overdo the rain.

Edit - Just checked the BOM rainfall figure - most stations have recorded 0 or under 1mm in the area under the green band - backs up my argument.

the choice of radar location was a total joke, it was moved due to the cost of hiring the space at mt stuart, but should have stayed. there is no easterly view, bowen is much better, the 60km radar is pathetic as the radar is too far inland and its crap reading to the north as you stated.

Sometimes the radar is reserved to. Ive been under a light rain area and its pissing down. But yeah mostly its inaccurate. If its hardly raining up thete then that explains why its consistantly drying up as it comes south cos the fact is its not as heavy as it looks.

just spent the weekend at Wunjunga Beach, south of Home Hill with the kids. Good tides, good winds, but gee it was hot by day! kids had a great weekend though.

4mm from overnight showers here, monthly total now 98mm.

Wow - i love the line 'Telecom Dial-It in Townsville (077) 1196'...

i remember this day, i was 10. the rain was relentless - we had brought a rain gauge for xmas and it was my job to empty it. i tipped out 500mm over 2 days! In those days we never had a computer so we were all listening to the radio. As for the flooding, we lived near Gairloch, where up until a few years ago, was the main point of reference for Ingham flooding. Gairloch is a 120year+ old concrete bridge across the Herbert, and was part of the Bruce Highway up until the late 60's, and was still in use as a back road until 2015 when it was closed amid safety concerns. Everyone would drive down the steep cutting to see the river heights - and on this particular day, the river was rising that fast, you could see it creeping up the cutting and also see the indicators going under water. from memory we were there an hour and it rose nearly 3m. There was a huge crowd - 50+ - and some nearly got caught trying to get back into town as the water covered Halifax Rd.

I’ve just returned to Townsville from holidaying around the Mackay area over the last few weeks.

Not very often you’d ever get to say this, but it actually got much greener the closer I got to Townsville.

Anyway, I’ve been keeping a daily log of the rainfall totals on the BOMs alert rain gauges around our area right through last year and thought a few here might be interested in the yearly totals from 2017.

1927 Paluma AL
1877 Paluma Dam
1132 Cungulla

Is 06Z out yet? The latest 00z run has a cyclone in the Coral Sea but way out east of Aus with an upper trough that looks like it will take it away. That's way out in 384 land with GFS, which is definitely FI territory....however saying all that it's great to have something to look at and it's a sign that patterns are changing smile

The model I looked at said 06z...might have been a typo..prob was 00z

But as you say its long way out and will change multiple times and may not happen at all.but gfs has been lretty good with predicting systems just not there track.

Certainly a dry year in Ingham for 2017. The only day we cracked over the 100mm mark was in October! 1,545mm annually - well below the long term average. Hopefully something will crack next week - models are looking the goods

i dont want a cyclone, i want a broadscale monsoon system across the north. we all need rain, cyclone contract the rain and more than likely head SE anyway.

Nothing to show a broad scale monsoon system but I just want rain. However it comes, as long as its lots

But so far the charts show a good chance of that low making land fall...of course being so far out anytjing can happen. But as ive said before. Yasi was forecast 2 weeks out.

Seems to be some nice cells building up towards the west are they going to do their usual trick and fall apart at our doorstep???? Perhaps not they do seem to be building closer than usual can they survive the trip over the range.........

I believe there not in the catchment. I think the dam catchment is tiny. Unless it rains almost on top of it I dont think it gets much run off.

On a side note...check out the qld satellite. The cloud on the coast up to the tip of the penisula looks like smoke blowing in to the ocean...surreal.

A lot of low level cloud in Ingham - you can see the light of town reflecting pink in the sky, and also a lot of far off lighting to the west, south and east. Surely we can't miss out!

Ironically, Robin Hood was a thief, and someone stole Townsville's rain. If only we could swear on here...

Time to move the radar back to Mount Stuart, still haven't had a decent drop since its relocation.

100% spot on BN! Cairns just picked up some good patchy falls last night which was beautiful but as a long time former Townsvillian I share your pain and shear frustration and wonder when the dry run is going to end...it will happen and probably with a bang but when...

Amazing to see 82mm fall out at Charters Towers, while we’ve only had 5mm at my place in Thuringowa.

Wish it would just hurry up and rain.

2mm at my place, 200mm in Cairns, same weather event just the conditions aligned for them. Shows how good a decent ENE flow can be.

Quite perplexing isn't it.

Some scattered activity streaming in from the ENE, hopefully this picks up a bit into the evening. The models continue to play with weak Lows in both the Coral Sea and GOC, as always at this time of year I wouldn't trust any model more than a couple of days out.

No, they just got the best of it. I would have been happy with 50-60mm, Burdekin got that, Towers more, Tsv just once again unlucky.

Will start to become clearer in next few days. Gfs forecasting 100-300mm locally grading up to 1500mm in the goc while ec is forecasting about 30mm. CMC backs up gfs at present but forms a low further south off Rocky. Access doest want much bar a WA system.

Decent total up north. Drove to Cairns on Tuesday, and again yesterday. Tuesday everything, the creeks and gullys, were bone dry. Yesterday they had a good flow in them and some on the back-roads behind Innisfail were flooded. The Bilyana-Murray River area of the highway there was water everywhere. The Palmerston range was torrential - water was flowing down off the mountain across the road in places.

one can only hope we get some next week smile

I have to say GFS has been quiet consistant with rain totals. Maybe eventually gfs will either drop that or maybe the other models will eventually follow suit. Hate the watching and waiting game cos frankly lets all agree, nature is unpredictable and the bom can get it wrong often, no fault of theres...just how nature works.

Bom keep backing off any decent falls. Looks as if the gulf system will stay far enough away not to be of much impact, and if anything ends up forming in the CS it will bugger off east.

the GOC looks like having a decent inflow, our issue is a weak trough or low forms in the southern coral sea blocking that flow from the coral sea.

Seems the monsoon is deepening so dont write anything off yet. As I have learnt, its all about positioning.

Looks like Townsville might see 100mm in total this week, even less for Southern parts of the Herbie Burdie.

This time of year is a forecasting nightmare, even more so when the MT is hanging around.
