Williamtown RAAF long term average is 1.3 days per year over 40C. Think it ends up with 11 for 2017. Didn't get too many screaming NWers with the heat though which was welcome/unusual.

I checked a Sydney site - Bankstown. It had 10 days of 40+ in 2017, 4 in January and three in each of February and December. This compares to an annual average of 1.4 (Jan 0.7, Feb 0.3, Nov & Dec each 0.2).

December is interesting: on average, a 40+ once every 5 years or so, but 3 in this December.

-------

Anyway, Happy New Year to all and may 2018 bring lots of the weather you want.

Steve.

Happy New Year to you as well, Steve and Ashestoashes. Yes has been interesting December and overall an interesting 2017 but with a few less storms than I would've liked.

Btw I have heard on weather forecasts today and yesterday that the cloud will clear just in time for the fireworks. I highly doubt if it hasn't cleared already, in fact it will probably get thicker as temps drop, thus increasing humidity.

Been mostly sunny here at Beacon Hill since around midday. Have been getting the occasional messy coastal nonsense from the north east this afternoon but sun has been out more than not.

Looks like Sydney scraped through with luck for NYE once again. Could get a bonus smoke clearing breeze if the NE keeps going. A still night quickly gets shrouded in the smoke which hazes out any ground or bridge based display.

Some serious heat for the basin in the forecast next week. This summer just keeps on giving.

Pretty good going for Williamtown, that is for sure.
Not exactly sure how many 40s here, but certainly a lot of 39'ers as well, that were just shy of this.
Has been an incredible year overall, the Feb records set the tone, they were just off scale hot. (just failing to get the overall state record too from 2004)
Unusual to get records in successive summers too, for Jan, Feb of 2016/17, and then December of this year for 2017/18.

Steve.

I think Penrith has an average of 2 x 40○c days per year, but this year it has had 15 x days of 40 or over.

This month alone has had 5 such days. Bringing the daily average for December 3.9 degrees above average,

I am planning on getting out of here. A climate refugee, too hot!
Want move to wollongong where it so much cooler. Saving my pennies! poke

Well Happy New Year to everyone.

The cloud cleared about an hour before the fireworks were due to go off. A pleasant evening indeed!!

Hoping 2018 is a great one!!

Good morning and a happy 2018. It's a beautiful sunny morning here, too bad about the early Southerly. The updated forecast still has it arriving in Sydney in the middle of the day. It seems to be located between Kiama and Port Kembla as at 9:00AM, having passed through Kiama around 8:30. It doesn't seem to have a lot of punch. There looks to be marine layer cloud developing South of Nowra.

The anemometer at Fort Dennison (which provides wind measurements for OH) seems to have been broken overnight. A stray firework perhaps? Webcams and Sydney Harbour show light Westerlies.

Happy New Year WZ crew!

Few snaps from the roof of our apartment at midnight, nothing beats a Sydney harbour fireworks display! grin

Fantastic photos CS22. You're lucky to have access to such a spot.

------

Winds are turning to the SE across Sydney. There seems to be no 'change' as such, just a wind shift as a broad trough moves across. The breeze seems to be a bit cooler in the last 15 minutes or so. To start with, we have warm air that blew out to sea sloshing back over the coast. Later I expect the SE'ers to freshen, with some low cloud moving in.

For now, though, it's sunshine and cicadas, about 29-30 in areas sheltered from the SE'ers.

Hi I was wondering whether we need a thread for the impending heatwave.

It's only 2 days of hot weather so doesn't really qualify as a heatwave IMO.

A few bits of cloud about this morning. But the SE wind over the past hour has cleared it. Not a cloud in the sky such a perfect New Years Day.

Soupy dew points on the coast around Ballina (27.4), Cape Byron (27.3) and Gold Coast (26.8) this morning and into the afternoon.

That'll put some condensation on your beer.
