A little, light morning rain brought 0.6mm here. At the moment, sunny skies overhead and to the west, with some mid level cloud to the east at sea.
Very slight to slight chance of a shower/storm here this afternoon, but in all likelihood it should remain dry.

Fast-moving band of storms have developed along the troughline this afternoon/evening. They're about to start crossing the Great Divide, so will soon see if that ends up being a bit too traumatic for them. Models weren't interested in evening precip reaching the coast, but as always Mother Nature will get the final say.

A thunderstorm hit here around 8:45pm tonight. It was a high-based storm bringing strong winds (approx peak 60-65km/h) and occasional lightning/thunder. Being high-based and fast-moving, it didn't bring much rain, just 1.8mm. I could hear the approaching strong winds around two minutes or so before it came. A couple of lightning pics before the wind hit:

The line of storms survived the crossing of the Divide in some areas of the northern MNC but didn't in other parts, so it was hit and miss tonight.

Thanks Seabreeze - always enjoy your reports. Don't think anything will make it this far tonight. May be a bit of early morning action here tomorrow.

1mm in a light shower earlier this arvo. Looks to be a nice line out near Texas way moving in this general direction. Can see quite a bit of lightning in the distance from that direction. Hope it makes it.

Can see pretty much constant lightning even from the Tweed area on the far horizon. I'm pretty sure I may have also seen some lightning sprites. I think when theres a fair bit of dry, clear air around you can see lightning much further away than you usually can. I was surprised given its 150km away.

Looks like the storms are losing intensity and starting to wash out. The GC might get a little bit, but can't see anything getting to Brisbane. Not that I'm complaining, thunder when I'm sleeping certainly wouldn't be appreciated.

Nature's Fury and for anyone else interested, I heard back from the people at the US Climate Prediction Centre who manage the system which displays those outlook maps and it was indeed a problem with their system which caused it to display such high probabilities. This has now been fixed and below are the correct maps for next month and the upcoming winter.

In other news, many locations in our region have reached well into the hottest 10% of past April max temps.
Max temps still look like dropping down closer to more seasonal values from midweek but still remaining a bit above average on most days after that for a good week or two at least, if not longer.
Still some modest instability appearing on the cards for later this week but no real exciting setups to write home about.
And the slightly greater than even odds for some enhanced rainfall over some parts of eastern Australia later this month according to the EC ensemble but again, the probabilities don't look that high:

Hot April day today. I spent 6 hours of it on a terracotta tile roof. The NNW winds helped keep the situation bearable, but it was cooking around 2pm.

2mm total from yesterday’s light rain. At least we won’t break the record for the driest April on record. Heat record however remains to be seen...
Such stark contrasts between hemispheres. As mentioned, looks like that prediction of the coldest winter in recent memory out this way might go up in smoke. Things better change and change fast if this prediction has a chance.

Who predicted a cold winter, that would be cool, kill off the grasshoppers and mice anyway? I have noticed the last several years its getting colder later (june) and staying cold later into october.

Yes it would be nice Lani. David Taylor predicted this. Not sure where he got his info from. I think he came to this conclusion from the brutal winter in most of the northern hemisphere along with lack of sunspot activity. I think this country plays by its own rules however, hot hot and more hot. Oh ya, and dry too. At least in my neck of the woods anyway.
