looks like if you are near the coast of sydney or wollongong you'd be witness to an amazing light show from the storm off the coast

Unfortunately this band did what 90% do, they ride the coast until Jervis Bay, then head east out to sea. I would love $10 for every time I have seen that !

The light show was spoiled by low cloud underneath the storms, you could not really see many CG's. I was at Black Head, Geroa.

Earlier when I got off work I headed up the highlands, there was some thumb nail sized hail at the base of Macquarie Pass, but overall the situation was in rapid decline by the time I hit the highlands. Cells were rather low topped and lacked that sharp edges I prefer.

I had an eye on that storm last night and noticed the same. Moved steadily up the coast for a couple of hours then did a sharp right hand turn at Jervis Bay.

----

Mostly cloudy here, with a 20 knot Southerly making it feel cool. The Sun has broken out a couple of times.

OH is today's hot spot, spiking at nearly 25 degrees (no doubt during a sunny break) a little while ago.

Weather for the Sydney test looks good, a bit hot towards the end.

The satellite shows the marine layer starting to break up. It's getting a bit brighter here and OH is warming up a bit so hopefully play can start soon.

I always thought they should play the Sydney Test in Bathurst or Canberra if a few drops of rain is enough to wipe out hours of play. Either that or change aspects of the game so rain is less of a problem. Generally, Major League Baseball teams will continue play in light to moderate rain but will suspend play if it is raining heavily or if there is standing water on the field.

------

Access is now showing the coming heat extending into Tuesday, although it looks pretty unsettled after that.

I notice the grass outside is starting to dry out again. While it's rained on 19 of the last 35 days at OH, it's mostly been in tiny amounts, so December finished with about 60% of its average rainfall. January so far is continuing that trend. Even so, we're getting about an avergae amount of sun and more than an average amount of heat.

EDIT: Great storm cloud & lighning pictures ConM.

Quite cool tonight, about 15 currently. It's quite pleasant to have a night like this for once.

Access is showing a cool, wet period for Tuesday to Thursday next week, with 20-30mm for Sydney on Wednesday. GFS shows something similar, but less rain. Both show the heat returning late next week.

----

It looks a a much better day for cricket today. The sea breeze is up and running, even here, so I don't think it'll reach the forecast 28 at OH given that it's below 25 there now.

EDIT: refreshingly cool this morning. OH dropped to 17.3, the coolest since Dec 10.

The heatwave is starting up over inland NSW with many areas in the west in the high thirties. Here it is 24C with a high of 27C forecast, then 31C tomorrow and a near recording breaking 33C on Sunday.

An approaching cold front due Saturday night will stall over Victoria against a strong HP ridge in the Tasman Sea, thereby keeping NSW hot until Monday-Tuesday next week. The BoM's outlook for a cooler and wetter Jan to March isn't off to a good start.

We had 690mm of rain in 2017 - about 30% below normal. 50km to our NE, Katoomba had 1263mm (10% below normal), but nearly half that total fell in March alone.

Quite dry conditions have prevailed here since early December with only sporadic light rain from storms that have been more miss than hit in this area. Hope to see more moisture next week. Snakes are enjoying this warmth - got to keep reminding myself to look out for them.

Glad you and Eddy met up Homer, I wish I could have made it up there.

I thought last night was quite nice actually. Certainly quite cool for mid-summer, Marangaroo near Lithgow got down to 7.1, Moss Vale 8.1.

Thanks Homer, was great to catch up. How was the trip home?

Another beaut day here, bit of a sea gale late this arvo. Had to go Newcastle this afternoon was watching the temp gauge more than the speedometer, highest was 38c around the Karuah bypass.

Great trip home. Traffic was ok surprisingly.
Amazing the difference in temperature between a seaside resort like Fingal Bay this morning to Dural 35 km's inland when I got home. Air-con went on straight away!!
