For the week of Jan. 7-13: Mena's Avg. Max.: 48.0F/8.8C; Avg. Min.: 27.0F/-2.7C

This first full week of 2018 featured highly variable temperatures and our first nice raindump of the year.
Early-week rain (7th-early AM on 8th) was from passage of a Pacific cold front. A fairly strong Canadian cold front hit us (just after 3PM) on the 11th. Due to SW/S winds, fog & drizzle, our temperature rose from late PM on the 9th until 3PM on the 11th (when the Canadian cold front hit); afterwards, the temperatures dropped fairly quickly the remainder of the 11th. Only light sprinkles (& slightly darker clouds) upon passage of the front, the gusty NW/NNW/N winds (and frigid Wind Chills) didn't hit my area until about 10:30PM that night.
That front caused a fair temperature contrast across Texas--as per the US METAR site: At 11:35AM on the 11th, it was 26F/-3.3C in Perryton, Texas white it was 81F/27.2C in Brownsville, Texas. There were also dramatic temperature differences at places--within a few miles of each other--on either side of this cold front.
Overall Low--10:25PM--listed for the 8th; the Maximum on the 9th was around 2:50PM & 11:25PM; the maximum on the 10th was around 9:05PM; the Overall Low on the 11th was around 11:25PM (the Morning Low was 56F/13.3C).
Forecast for the upcoming week calls for a wintry mix of precipitation overnight Monday into Tuesday AM, followed by more colder air and rebounding temperatures, with shower chances for the weekend.

Hello Folks:

Well, my area--and much of the Southern US--is getting deeper into the grips of "Old Man Winter":

Mena had a frigid daytime maximum yesterday (Tuesday) of only 18F/-7.7C (our avg. max. now is 47F/8.3C)--Wind Chills near 0F/-17.7C; and we bottomed out this (Wed.) morning at an amazingly low -1F/-18.3C! This is Mena's first below-zeroF/-17.7C or below minimum since Dec. 24, 1989 (our avg. min. now is 27F/-2.7C). Hard to believe we will be around 60F/15.5C for tops by the weekend.
Other chilly minimums in Arkansas this morning include:
-7F/-21.6 at Lead Hill (Boone County)
-5F/-20.5C at Mammoth Spring (Fulton County)
-3F/-18.8C at Winslow (Washington County; their max. yesterday was only 11F/-11.6C)
-2F/-18.3C at Gilbert (Newton County)
1F/-17.2C at Calico Rock (Izard County)

I'm sure a number of Date Records for Low Maximums & Low Minimums will be broken in Arkansas and over much of the Southern US, these past few days.

Seems like it was quite widely the coldest night since 24 December 1989 across the southern US. (You've probably said this before, but what did you get down to in 1989?).

I remember the December 1989 cold wave well - I was travelling across Canada at the time.

Hello Blair & ALL:

In December 1989, Mena bottomed out at -7F/-21.6C on both the mornings of December 23rd & 24th (also down to -1F/-18.3C on the 22nd). The maximum on the 23rd was only 12F/-11.1C. These are the lowest minimums & maximum that I've ever personally experienced.
December 1989 was a fairly cold month overall, as the avg. min. for the month was 19.4F/-7.0C; as 28 of the 31 days in January had a morning minimum of 32F/0C or lower.

Hello Folks:

I've done some research, and here are the instances of below 0F (-1F/-18.3C) or lower minimums in Mena, Arkansas:
Year (numbers in parentheses are the Days in that year of Below Zero F minimums):

1895 (2); 1899 (3); 1903 (1); 1905 (1); 1911 (1); 1912 (1); 1918 (2); 1930 (2); 1933 (1); 1940 (1); 1942 (1); 1943 (1); 1951 (1); 1962 (2); 1966 (1); 1979 (1); 1982 (1); 1983 (1); 1989 (3); 2018 (thus far: 1).

A Yearly Low Minimum of 0F/-17.7C was reached in 1977 & 1988.

As you can see, such cold minimums are not that frequent here.

For the week of Jan. 14-20: Mena's Avg. Max.: 48.2F/9.0C; Avg. Min.: 26.8F/-2.8C

My area had another good Wintry blast--as a fairly powerful Canadian cold front came through during the early PM hours of the 15th. Very light & brief Snow Flurries fell late PM on the 15th & into the 16th. The Wind Chills on those days was fairly brutal, being well below-zeroF/-18C or lower for stretches on both those days (gusty & frigid NW/N breezes). The temperatures slowly recovered the remainder of the week; the sprinkles on the 20th were just ahead of a good rain-producing Pacific cold front which passed through on the 21st (was great to hear thunder rumbles again). Any heavier Wintry precipitation--on the 15th & 16th--fell to our N & NW. The late-week warmth felt almost like a "Heat Wave" compared to the Arctic conditions earlier in the week. There were no sharp temperature drops in my area--due to the frigid cold front--as the nearby mountains hinder the progress of the shallow & heavy airmass; hence, the colder air oozes into my area and the temperature steadily falls (aided by those chilly & brisk N/NW breezes).
Overall Low-around 10:45PM-listed for the 15th; Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 16th; Overall High-around 7:10PM-listed for the 20th (as drizzle, cloudcover and fog patches caused a nighttime temperature rise; the Daytime Maximum was 57F/13.8C around 3PM).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for a bit warmer conditions, with fairly good shower chances coming into the weekend.

Some pretty impressive cold temperatures there Wet Snow, and a big contrast over a few days: max 20F on the 16th, 60F a few days later. Min -1F on the 17th, 46F 3 days later. That last day is not too different from Sydney in mid Winter.

We get our big contrasts in Summer: a searing blast from the interior replaced by a blast from cold Southern seas, especially in Melbourne but also Sydney and other Southern cities too. 110F one day, 70 the next.

Sydney today was cloudy and humid, 74F to 81F near the Harbour, sunnier and hotter 30 miles inland at Penrith, 72 to 95F.

For the week of Jan. 21-27: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.4F/9.6C; Avg. Min.: 27.0F/-2.7C

This past week featured a couple of very nice raindumps--courtesy of a couple Pacific cold frontal passages--on the 21st & 27th. The 24th & 25th had less humidity & good daily temperature spreads. Quite windy (from WNW/NW)--sustained & gusts--for several hours on the 22nd (post-frontal). This week felt considerably warmer compared to the week previous. Enjoyed the warmth in this mid-Winter week, as you never know when another chunk of super-cold air will slide Southwards and "Old Man Winter" will come for another visit.
Overall Low-11:10PM-listed for the 21st (as the Morning Minimum was a quite balmy 60F/15.5C); Maximum on the 22nd was at 12:01AM & around 3PM & Overall Low around 10:50PM; Overall Low-around 11:25PM-listed for the 23rd; Gusty SW (pre-frontal) winds and cloudcover caused the nighttime temperatures to rise, so the Overall High on the 26th was around 10:35PM; Overall Low-around 11:20PM-listed for the 27th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warming tops with another cooldown with rainchances by the weekend.

Hello Steve777: Yes, I never cease to marvel at your ocean-influenced very large temperature rises/drops from one day to the next. Such temperature fluctuations here would no doubt be accompanied by a round of fairly severe storms. I often wonder how different the climate in my area would be if we were in close proximity to a large body of water. Have A Great One, Good Buddy!

Hello Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

.........2..46F/7.7C...28F/-2.2C..---
........3..47F/8.3C...28F/-2.2C..---

For the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3: Mena's Avg. Max.: 50.8F/10.4C; Avg. Min.: 27.5F/-2.5C

This past week featured variable mid-Winter temperatures & the passage of a couple dry Canadian cold fronts (on the 29th & early PM on the 1st). The 31st felt like an early Spring day, with little wind & stronger sunshine. The cold fronts also dropped the humidity levels, making for good daily temperature spreads on a few of the days.
Overall Low--around 11:10PM--listed for the 1st (as the morning minimum was a balmy 49F/9.4C).
Forecast for the upcoming week calls for a similar up-and-down temperature profile, with very good shower chances to start & end the week--starting to get fairly dry here again.
The 2nd was Groundhog Day here in the US and Punxsutawny Phil saw his shadow--meaning 6 more weeks of Winter (more or less...LOL...).
We've just crossed the "logical" mid-point of Winter & I'm starting to get concerned that my area may have yet another "snow-less" Winter this season.
