Looks like some heavy falls tommorow. 20-50MM for penrith 10-30MM for Sydney with "possibly severe" in the forecast.

Really is welcomed for Sydney, hopefully this marks a change in pattern, first time for sometime that the bureau has upgraded the forecast a day before the event for sometime.

We've had multiple nice little storms here this arvo and tonight. They're still rumbling and flashing away right now. Like Sidney I look forward to tomorrow with great anticipation.

Big day today, lot of dams about to get a top up. All it takes is one of these HP storms over one area, or a convoy as we're seeing now. Totals undercooked by most models, 40-100mm depending on how the cells behave I reckon (seen this setup before). Loads of moisture from the soupy SSTs, instability and ofcorse the heating trigger - no shortage of fuel there.

About 2.30 last night we got a cracker of a storm - heaps of lightning and about 16mm of rain.

Very sticky (for here) this morning. Pleasant temp at the moment of about 19/20 but will likely climb to about 31 or so.

Hopefully a little cooler tonight. smile

Mild day, 20-24C, days like this are gold in January.
2 mm of rain until 9am, although I suspect we got more than the airport reading.
Warm up back to hot, high 30s and even 40C again by the weekend.

2nd consecutive night over 20C, very muggy but not overly hot.
Yesterdays max only in mid 20s hopefully will repeat today.

Something for the heat haters to look forward to: after a short burst of heat on Friday/Saturday (basically just Saturday morning for the coast), quite a cool air mass arrives on Saturday afternoon. 850 temps over Sydney at 1400 Sunday are a wintry 6 degrees. It stays below 10 until around Noon Monday.

The change has long-fetch Southerlies behind it but the BOM doesn't expect much rain and says it will be partly cloudy near the coast from Sunday to Tuesday. Sydney maxima are forecast to be 23-25 on those days, but maybe they're overshooting. Where skies are clear, there might be cool nights - even OH gets down to 17 on Monday.

Yes Steve - hoping for a bit of a cooler couple of mornings out here. Something to take some heat out of the house smile

I don't mind warm/hot days as long as it cools overnight, out here we have a better chance of that cooling than many of you guys.

It's all what we are used to as well. Our long term average night in January is around 13 or 14, so a 20 or 21 degree night for us is very obvious smile

Also couple that temp with often a noticeable rise in humidity that same night and it becomes even more noticeable. All part of the seasonal fun smile

A couple of nights ago when the storm hit and we had rapid cooling of at least 10 degrees with a really cool breeze - my whole body was "energised" and I stupidly almost went looking for some physical task to do because I felt like doing something. When it's hot I don't want to move - just the way my body works - bit weird grin

Certainly will be a sweaty tennis night for me tonight - tomorrow night we are looking at a 21 or so again after a top in the mid to high 30's. That will create a lot of irritable people around here Saturday morning smile

Then the pleasant cool down on Saturday at some point and some below average nights Sunday/Monday smile

Looks like late next week will heat up again - quite the cycle we have going at the moment.

Yes it is quite an interesting cycle, and I am quite liking the mix of hot and mild days. Like today is very nice in its own way and we got a cool night of 15.8C. Nights have been rather cool at times lately, we almost got to sub 10 territory with an 11.8 on the 5th which was the same day Moss Vale got down to 8.1C.

These nights have been good because the house has been able to cool down (our aircon doesn't work any more) with these cool but dry southerly changes.

I'm quite happy with this summer so far, quite a few hot days but plenty of reprieve in between. Plus a decent amount of storms hitting this area. I just hope it doesn't turn consistently miserable after Australia Day like it so often does.

PS: Welcome back Dave, hope you had a great Christmas and New Year. I am not posting as much these days but I get on when I can. smile

There is a bit of sniff in the models of lower pressure in the Tasman, and some movement in the uppers. See if it translates to something more substantial for us.
