Hot night, mid 20s now, going for high 38-39C today.
Next Friday now upgraded to 42C, after 38C on Thursday, another severe burst of heat for sure.

As others have said that storm that rolled through Wollongong last night was incredibly lightning active, flashing at least once a second. I was filming near barrack point, had a few strikes land about a km away with one or two half that. The only downside was there didnít seem to be any staccatos (big branchy bolts) but some were pulsing long enough to turn the camera and still get a piece of them😀

A storm west of Nowra on sunset was actually producing more frequent CG lightning when it was 30 km away but it weakened before approaching and the bolts stopped.

Pingtang was also filming around warilla into the night so between us we should have some good video.

Well, it looks like the storms did form and did reach the coast - on the Illawarra. Had an early night so missed the excitement.

Warm, overcast and fairly still here. Lows temps across Sydney were close to 23. The change seems to have passed through Merimbula around 7:00, so it's a way off. I thought the fairly sharp clearing edge to the cloud might mark the change, but the change seems to be a fair way behind it.

And it appears to be a significantly cooler change as forecast.
Will be interesting to watch the temperatures in the Snowy mountains today with snow flurries forecast for later on.
Thredbo TS already down to 6.8 after a max of 11.6 at 6.41 am.

Thank you Dipole.

-----

The Sun's come out here and it's quickly warming.

That does look like a significant cool change, albiet witout much rain.

After that, the heat makes a comeback, and the models show the warmth continuing until near the end of the month, with coastal changes and hopefully storms mixed in. NAEFS now shows a warm signal for Eastern and Central Australia for the 20 to 27th:

NAEFS Temp Anomaly

I will get a report on Thredbo from my son who had a running week up there.
Absolutely bucketing down here now, as it did intermittently last night, glad I fixed the guttering.

Looks like we went from possible storm today down to a slight chance of shower for Sydney metro on the latest update.

Hope they are wrong like Wollongong last night.

Gusting into the mid 70's here now, seriously strong for a summertime westerly.

Weirdest weather here - late winter winds; summer temps, and autumn skies.

Southerly pushing through Nowra now; then has to get over the Saddelback and will pour into the Illawarra basin. Oh yay, it's low 20's, again.

Funkyseefunkydo I can easily see how.

Haven't noticed any large trees show signs of that but there are small to medium shurbs and plants showing stress. Some have withered and died but the amount of rain falling has been able to keep things mostly on life support.

These storms with dribs and drabs just don't cut it. So much is lost to evaporation. Grass dies and greens up just a tad to die off again.

Last year was the driest year in 11 years for this localised area so it could be worse but not ideal.

Luckily the ranges and surrounds have had rain from the pulsey cells and storms otherwise I imagine the summer couldve been a tad more different.

It's depressing looking at mostly brown surrounds for months on end and I'm not looking forward to the upcoming heat. Summer is usually my favourite season except not when it's stuck on repeat with these heat bursts with little rain.

Fingers and toes crossed for change. smile

Overcast with light rain and pretty fresh at 12.5 deg here at present. Wind has died down after being very strong earlier. Conditions are more typical of early spring than mid summer.

Still won't have to wait long before the heat comes back. I don't recall such a frequency of 35+ days as in recent years. Definitely didn't happen this often in the 20th century.

A bushfire near Tomago, just near Williamtown, is currently clearly visible on the Newy and Sydney radars.
