Not wrong about a piss poor storm season Eddy, it's been a boring summer so far.

Had 1.8mm to 9am here this morning but looking at the ground you could not tell.

Interesting, no individual records for the basin though this Jan, except of course for Penrith with the 47.3C. (current Richmond station was just shy of Jan 18 2013, 46.3C vs 46.4C))
With all the talk of records and global warming, like Jan this year at Penrith and even Feb last year with the current Richmond RAAF getting to 47.0C, the old Ricmond RAAF record of 47.8C on Jan 14 1939 at 47.8C still stands unchallenged as the benchmark for heatwaves.
That record has really stood the test of time.
Still a very consistent and hot month overall, and the hottest Jan and overall month for numerous spots here - including Singleton and Scone, Cessnock equalled Feb last year, and Tocal was just shy of December 1990.

Down south gets rain, up in the northern Rivers they get rain, albeit less.

Meanwhile we can't manage even 0 mm at Bankstown AWS from this system. The cloud could have at least made itself scarce for the lunar eclipse.

Only saving grace is the cooler air. Gah! One day this dry spell will break (and how) and when it does I will go for a dance in it. grin poke

Looking nice and dry for the coast for the next 2 weeks.

It's like we slumped straight into winter today, thankfully GFS ramps up the heat in it's extended run.

Gotta love this 100% cloud cover despite humidity being in the 50's. No lunar eclipse to be seen here.

The rain seems to have finished for now so the cloud can bugger off. Unfortunately, that doesn't look like happening soon.

Chatswood had 1mm overnight, OH had 2mm, a poor return for a lost Summer day.

I drove up to Newcastle and back today (family visit). It was windy with solid grey dome skies, cool and, on the M1/F3, drizzle patches. The temperature on the car thermometer hovered around 19-21 on both journeys, down to 18 on high ground.

Actually, about 75% of the continent is covered in cloud. I don't think I've seen that before:

-----

While many Sydney sites broke records set only last year, OH finished at 20.1 - 27.8, for anomalies of +1.0 to +1.8 over 1961-1990 averages. That doesn't look like much, but the average max is higher than any level achieved in those years. It is just above the 95th percentile for all 158 years. The minimum is above the 90th percentile for all years.

The new OH site finished 0.7 higher for maxima (asuming today was close to 22). On sunny days with strong sea breezes it was 2 or more degrees warmer. I think many of those overshot forecasts for Sydney this month might have been correct or at least closer for the new site.

Yeah the cloud can bugger off, today would have been very nice if it was sunny. Maybe tomorrow will see a bit more sunshine.

Happy happy happy grin

I don't mind more heat once I've had a chance to cool off a bit smile

Hopefully out here it will soon be harder and harder to have warm nights.

Days shrinking by about 2 minutes each day.

The cooler nights are pleasant. The cloud has also, at least for now, done what I suggested last night it should do, although too late for the Eclipse. It's partly cloudy and 19-20 degrees across Sydney.

It looks that it will be cool and fairly cloudy for another few days, reverting to average teperatures early next week and then warming up towards the end of next week. There doesn't look to be much in the way of rain or storms on the horizon.

Still cool with a film of grey high cloud

Sun trying to come out.
Speaking of the sun, here are a couple of links that show the sub solar and sub lunar points. These points are where the sun/moon are at zenith to the earth surface ie solar noon ie appearing highest point in sky to an observer. Approx midday on a given longitude for the sun . The sub lunar point time is 11 hours behind the sub solar point time. What's the point of this info. Well you can see solar and lunar zenith in relation to latitudes as the seasons roll on

Had a top of 23.9c today, some brief moments of sunshine otherwise it was a mostly overcast day. At least the southerly winds had died right down.

Should be some nice coastal showers overnight.

Regarding that 1939 heat record at Richmond. Does anyone have the temps for days leading up to and after that record?

Unfortunately, data for the old Richmond RAAF site for 1939 is missing (or at least it hasn't been digitised). I believe 14/1/1939 was the culmination of a lengthy heatwave. Data is for OH is available, which had a long run of high 20's & low 30s, sea-breeze affected as in the recent hot spell.

-----

A pleasant day in Sydney, partly cloudy with lengthy sunny periods, better than forecast. Most of Sydney reached 23-25, apart from South-exposed locations like the Airport. OH swapped it's recent 'cold pole' role for 'hot spot', being warm in a Southerly. I didn't see any rain but there were a couple of light showers about (totals<= 1mm).

It's now overcast and a bit chilly, 16-18 at most sites around Sydney.

EDIT: great night & day map Knot.
