Yet another night of very strong wind, probably around 30-40 km/h with gusts probably around 80km/h.

Just went into town to get a few things and there are plastic bags and rubbish flying everywhere and bins knocked over onto the road. Gotta love strong winds on bin night..

Looks like winds won't ease too much tomorrow as those 700 and 850mb winds are still pretty solid and not looking too different from today.

Edit: Wind is now becoming even strongest to the point where I can hear my roof tiles banging in the strongest of gusts eek

Nuvver clone day. Very clear and breezy. Bom predicting warmer than usual July- September for certain regions. So this coming cold snap could be winter swan song. Blink and ya could miss it. Forecast max today of 20. Well above average. again

Sounds great! Is that the lowest of the year Ron?

I'll be boosting the Walcha tourist profile with a visit next week, so can we pencil in some frosts then? smile

Late next week looks great for frost up there, lucky you CS22. Looks like a large high will move across after the cold snap dies away on Wednesday, just want you want for those extreme frosts. -10 is a good chance I think as the air will be pretty cold and dry.

I was planning on dropping in to Walcha last July when I was up at Coffs but things didn't work out, the conditions were mild anyway as it turned out (as they were pretty much all winter).

RON!!! showing off again!!! smile

Another foggy morning out here, actually lifting a little now but still a bit drab.

June has been a bit drab this year, foggy cool starts (without spectacular frost though).

We can't come close to Walcha for frost.

Sun and Monday forecast to round out June with back to back coldies. Still June av mins and av max will be above av for Nobbys and Norah av min sbove average and av max might just come in even stevens. Wondering if this current NW wind streak is in anyway record breaking for these parts as set to last till Tuesday. I certainly don't recall a June with such an extended NW flow.

Some high cloud out of NW. Tomorrow tipped to hit 21.

What a strange day in Bega. It was a cold and most likely foggy day with thick high cloud keeping the inversion in check. The temperature hovered around 6-7c all day, however the NW winds finally cracked the inversion at 7PM, shooting the temperature up to 12.1c ,its maximum by far for the day! Here in Nowra it was a boring day with thick dull cloudcover all day, however the sunrise was spectacular!

Yeah very strange, an all day inversion near the coast is more typical of the Derwent Valley. Bega is now sitting on 14C with the humidity skyrocketing down!

Something I also found interesting about the day was the extremely cold minimums around the NT's and MNC/NR's. It's surprising how dry the airmass is up there. I reckon temps will be very cold again tonight in the NT's, given the extremely low DP's.

can't wait for monday when S'Wester is on the cards. NW winds lack the smell of winter. Was warm again today with high hot look cloud about. some parts of greater newcastle tipped to be 22 morrow. 22 with July almost here.

Williamtown certainly was cold o'nite. Nobbys and Norah got sub ten which was excellent. See Sydney obs hill already 15 and headed for late June scorcher. Sydney running way bove average for June at Obs Hill anways. The intrusion of winter weather for a few days will interupt the spring weather but dont worry as it will be followed by more lovely springtime weather.

Nearly 21 here and buildup from NW. Wind more NW and a few drops rain just landed. looks pretty unstable. TH radar shows small intense cell to north

Two sub 10's on the trot. App temp less than yesterday as wind speed less. Wind hopefully get around to SW later . Nice days to end June after such a mostly dull boring start to winter. Even the sea eagles were loving the wind yesterday as they circled and used the wind to swoop some mullet. Absolutely amazing seeing one drag its talons across the chop and rocket up with a struggling mullet. Friggin fantastic

Agree, though we did have "snow melt", very fine drops of water easily blown by the wind and not heavy enough to be normal precipitation....but no fluffy white stuff in the air.

I think there was snow on the higher (>900m) parts of "Canberra" down south. In Wamboin (~800m) we got the same, persistent drizzle all day. I highly doubt there would have been any snow that made it into the higher suburbs of Canberra itself.

The following spreadsheet graph shows how Sydney has fared for temperatures in the first half of 2014.

The solid blue line shows a 9-day moving average of the mean daily temperature at Bankstown, NSW, about 20 km SW of Sydney. The moving average for each day includes the maxima and minima for that day and the four days before and after. Forecast temps for Parramatta for July 1 to 4 were used to calculate the moving averages for the last few days of June.

The dotted red line is the long term mean for Bankstown (years 1969-2013).

I chose Bankstown because it is less heat-island affected than the Sydney site at Observatory Hill and also because it is not affected by marginal sea breezes.

Sydney's Descent into Winter - 2014 by SteveSeven77, on Flickr

Unlike places further inland, Summer wasn't particularly hot near the coast but it was long - up until the end of March. Autumn got underway in April but went into reverse with the May 'warm wave'. However, Winter got started maybe a couple of weeks behind schedule, with temperaturess now tracking about a degree above average.
