Luckily for us, it seems we will be VERY hot for a prolonged period but not really EXTREME, hope that is the case smile

I'm really hoping that end of Jan, start of Feb break comes. Can't see any REAL relief for us out here until then. Anyhow, it will do what it will do, we are just observing smile

Yes. Their record is 7, in 1979 and 2011 (although the comparison is of limited value because the Katoomba site has been just about everywhere except on top of the Three Sisters).

In general, the hot day runs forecast in NSW on and west of the ranges would need to be sustained for 8-10 days to get into record territory (e.g. existing records are 10 days over 40 at Dubbo and 9 days over 43 at Bourke).

Absolutely. I sometimes wonder about what the lowest absolute temperatures reached at various locations during the Ice Ages would have been; mean temperatures are known to have been 6-8 degrees lower at their peak, but feedbacks from snow cover (which probably would have existed at least intermittently in winter over large parts of inland southern Australia) could have pushed extremes quite a bit lower.

I am expecting a 2nd heatwave burst after this one anyway for the last week of January, getting 40 degree days on and around Australia Day is pretty common here as it is.
There is some real heat brewing in the NW of the state on Mon-Tues (46C at Bourke on both days), so we will see what happens after this spell.

10 degree night last night as well, I might add, which is a contrast to the heat that is on it's way.
Very pleasant, almost springlike in nights and diurnal ranges right now.

IMO, the only saving grace for this set of hot days, is that the nights will be cool. I couldn't believe it this morning when I checked the temps at 6am and Green Valley was around 10c!

We need cool overnights to purge our house of the high daytime temps that have heated up our internal mass.

Latest visible SAT pic (around 2pm ESDT) and I cannot spot a single cloud over NSW/VIC. That I would say is pretty rare for afternoon.

The second 4 deg minima here this morning, making five in a row below the Jan average of 12.7 deg. Also today's diurnal range is an amazing 27.1 degrees so far!

Looks like it maxed out at 26.8c here, still a bit of cool air hanging around with that very light easterly breeze. Still some very impressive swell rolling through, there were surfers surfing Jimmy's Beach this morning, something you don't see to often.

It was around 28-30 on the care thermometer early this afternoon but now it feels almost cool. OH was barely warmer than Bellambi one the sea breeze got going.

So around Sydney, max temps were:
Sydney OH ..... 26
Sydney Ol Pk .. 30
Bankstown ..... 33
Penrith ...........36

By the way, here's the infrared map of SE NSW and Eastern Vic in the total absence of any cloud (from Weatherzone Layers). Note the cold water near the coast (lighter blue).

Wind is decidely chilly off the lake. Influx of colder Tasman water. Despite the forecast furnacey days coming up I can sniff an earlier than usual autumn. Just a sniff.

We've had a max today of a bit over 33, not too bad. sun has huge sting in it though!!

We look like sort of 37's and 38's the next few days. It's not humid so really if you can stay out of direct sun it's ok.

The nights will be around mid teens here.

So we are looking at relatively hot but not horrible weather.

Tennis comp WILL be a bit warm tonight!! Fair chance of a bit of sweating going on!!

Might need a coldie after it. smile

Haha crikey. I would very much like to sniff what you are sniffing.

Autumn a long long way from here.

Neither can I!! smile Even then, I don't think it would improve my tennis game.

Not looking forward at all to the next 5 days. Particularly tomorrow when I have a concrete pour out near North Richmond. Then, I have the weekend to recover in air-con before hitting the 43 degree day again outdoors on Monday. The older I get, the less I can tolerate working in this. I think I need an office job.
