It may have been cool but whenever the temperature drops like that it gives me suspicions there's a high pressure cell near or over us.

Night's cooling off quickly = reduced humidity and alarm me to reduced rainfall. looking at the current and tomorrow's synoptcs it's confirmed.

I enjoyed the cool evening but the indicators it gives me of reduced rainfall counteracts any personal enjoyment I get out of it.

Agree, it does make it feel like autumn. I still feel like the HP is in the wrong spot for the time of the year. I tried to leave it a message to let it know but it hung up on me. poke

Despite all this talk of heat, Albion Park had its coldest January minimum in 19 years of records this morning with 8.6C, beating the previous 9.0.

The mild, low humidity weather of late has been really nice. Should be another cool night.

looks likely to see the month out with little or no rain here. Any glimpse of a change, just keeps getting pushed over the horizon. The same areas will continue to receive the precipitation if there is any. For NSW that is the southern border regions, south coast highlands. Perhaps central inland.....
Drought map showing severe deficiencies over the Hunter, and I believe we are another level on that again after missing anything that has been about.
Been a few summers like this now....I hope this isnt the new standard.
BOM outlook maps leave little inspiration, though they dont mean much as we will probably have a lowest on record month if this plays out as it looks currently, and I think it was a 65% chance of above average forecast.....
Cool mornings are nice before the long summer south of the wall sets in...

Not unusual to have a decent high around with the monsoon tough being more active to our north. Typical Hadley cell operation. As the monsoon deepens, it will push the cell further south which should allow more moisture penetration and short wave trough activity. Then hopefully we should start to see some poleward dipping tropical lows soon - the GOC looks primed.

A decent high? Its basically been there for a year.....
Everyone gets their told ya so moment if you wait long enough, but whichever way you look at it January hasnt gone to plan, and its running out of time to pay up.
You might as well peg "typical hadley cell operation" to the bottom of your posts because apparently that explains everything.

Geez fellas, if I had a beer before playing, I'd end up not playing!!! grin

It did taste bloody marvelous after the 4 sets I can assure you!! Every old joint creaking and groaning needed some anaesthetic.

Homey - don't envy your job in these conditions at all.

We were lucky to have another pleasant morning at around 11 degrees - cooler than forecast, I won't complain.

I still think around the start of Feb we will get a heat push back - certainly hope so.

Surely some monsoonal stuff must impact somewhere in the next few weeks. Got my fingers crossed for a wetter cooler Feb, no scientific basis to it just a hope and gut feeling - both been wrong before though. smile

Spare at thought for some mates living in Tassie - near Hobart this morning 29 degrees at about 4.30 this morning!!

Hadley could sure swing a ball.
Northerly over the western lake waters. Sea breeze should kick in to ameliorate the heat. Another cool onite temp. Dry heat by day. Cool nites. Not a bad deal. But really hoping for those who really need it to get some h2o soon. Very dry away from the narrow coastal strip.

It's pretty dry around here too. This is in spite of the fact that measurable rain has been recorded at OH on 11 of the 19 days of January so far and on 27 of the last 50 (since Dec 1).

For January, OH has received 35.2 mm so far, about one third of the monthly average. About half of this fell in a thunderstorm before dawn on the 9th.

OH has had 82.4mm since Dec 1, about 60% of would would be expected (based on Dec average + 19/31 Jan Avg).

----

Another day of perfectly clear skies and light breezes. The NE'er will kick in soon. I note that the BOM has knocked a couple of degrees off the forecast maxima for Sydney over the next few days, although not for the West. That looks more likely to eventuate than earlier forecasts.

Damn you CS22! Enjoy it - I know you will.

Today marks the five year anniversary of when just about every site in the basin broke their all time heat record.
I still remember taking an extended lunch break so I could walk the streets of the CBD and take it all in. Ahhh memories. grin

I meant yesterday, the 18th, was the five year anniversary.

Phhhh we smashed that record by almost half a degree earlier this month out here in the West (46.9c vs 47.3c). On track for the hottest month on record as well.

I did exactly the same thing. Once it went through 45C I left the office and went for a walk around Circular Quay just to make sure I could remember the historic occasion.

Been a real feature this summer, in Newcastle at least. Temps around or over 40C without the screaming NWer that usually accompanies them.

I'm just glad I'm no longer a poultry farmer in the western suburbs of Sydney. We use to dread weather like this, we would get low egg production, and often heaps of dead chooks from the heat. There was no chance to rest in the cool of the house, as you spent most of the day turning on and turning off mist sprays and sprinklers! Now during these heatwaves I just sit in the house and keyboard my way around the basin.
