Im more hopeful than optimistic stormy.....its extremely dire around here and and the rate at which the dams are dropping is accelerating. It must rain as we will run out of water I think by summers end if this keeps up. GFS has a wetter looking period at the end of the run, but who knows what will happen, when it will happen and who will get the best of it....

Eddy that is some serious erosion. quite an event for mid summer really. Just wish it sat in the northern tasman and pumped the wind onshore rather than crap southerlies.

Everybody cross everything for this pattern to breakdown...

Yeah GR, it was quite a significant event in the end, tbh I can't recall such an event like this one with very minimal rainfall and especially for a place like Port Stephens where we stick out like you know what. I think from memory it was less than 20mm.

As for the weather pattern breaking down, I hate to be a downer on this, but my gut feeling is that it wont break till mid to late February, bit like last year.

I have a friend who is a professional fisherman who has been waiting for a 10 inch rain event up in the hills for some time now to get the prawns running. He has been calling this dry spell a "green drought" just enough rain to keep things green. That was a month or so ago, I suspect things aren't as green as much anymore.

Amazing stuff Ron. Over the years Ron, how many times have you seen or recorded ice/frost in January?

That is really impressive Ron. We had a pretty low min too with 8.6C!! I don't think I remember ever seeing a sub 10 min here in January, it may even be a record for Albion Park.

Perisher also dipped below zero yesterday morning with -0.2 and Cooma Ap has had a min of 5 on Tuesday (I was camping in it), 4 yesterday and then 5 today.

Bloody Ron showing off again. grin

Also about 4 at Lithgow (Marrangaroo) this morning. We had about 8 or 9 but sadly the last of the unusually cool nights for maybe a fortnight.

No ice this morning but 4.3 still cool enough, especially for the big Campdraft event at the showground.

I would love a bit of that Ron smile

We had a min of about 11 - a bit cooler than forecast - happy with that.

Our nearest BoM site, Horsely Park got down to 13.1c this morning, what is powering this hot days/cool nights situation?

Low humidity, clear skies but most importantly, very light winds to allow the temp to drop.

Usually in these warm spells we have high humidity on the coastal plain or it's windy when there is low humidity (strong NW winds) or there is high cloud or any sort of cloud cover to trap the heat overnight.

Also the mega inversions (like 20C min at Cabramurra as DVC mentioned) seems to help trap the cool air in the lower areas.

Going back from heatwaves, just to consistently above average for the next week now.
37C today, hot but nothing spectacular for Jan here, and an average of nearly 35C for the next week is more than hot enough.
"Possible showers" at the end of the month may or may not eventuate, currently still at single digit figures for the month as far as rainfall goes. Very dry.

We are still forecast for about 5 degrees above average for each day until hopefully that change of air arrives around the end of the month.

Hopefully it will moderate temps back near average for us - especially the nights.

However it will probably heat up again around the end of the first week of Feb.

This has been a very well above average month for out here, despite quite a cool week in there.

About 10mm of rain with two bands of thunderstorms passing through Canberra overnight. It's a coolish 21C this morning and another band of storms is showing up on the radar. They are still forecasting 34C here but unless this cloud either burns off or we get a hot wind from the north it isn't going to happen.
Sitting on an average of 32C for the month so far which is well up on average which is about 28C.
Early Feb is usually our hottest time of year too so guess we will wait and see what the weather brings up.
Teddy

Sydney averages so far this month according to distance from the open sea:

Code:
Bellambi (0 km) Most stats missing. Can't do.
Sydney OH (7 km) 19.5 - 28.2 (-0.1 to +1.5, 1981-2010)
Sydney Airport (8km) 19.5 - 29.2 (+0.6 to +2.6)
Syndey Olympic Park (19km) 18.4 - 30.3 (-0.9 to +2.1)
Parramatta (26km) 17.0 - 31.6 (-0.6 to + 3.1)
Richmond (55km) 17.2 - 34.3 (-0.5 to + 4.1)

Looking at the forecast and assuming that the 31st is about 17-22 across the Basin, these won't change much by the end of the month. The last day will knock about 0.4 off Richmond's average, cancelling the next 6 days which will average about 36 max.

So, Richmond is likely to break its record January max (34.1, old & new sites). Parramatta will come close (31.7 current record). For OH, nothing special. On the other hand, minima have been at or slightly below average, but will come up by the end of the month by about 0.4.

I think that applies generally. Places that get strong / early sea breezes are a little above average for maxima, inland locations are in or close to record territory.

P.S. I think if OH had got all of it's forcast maxima, it would be in record territory too. Most days the forecast overshot by 1 or 2.
