Rainfall this Summer - Sydney (mm):
Code:
Sydney OH: 83
Sydney Ol Pk: 76
Richmond: 66

Near the coast, it's mostly been parcelled into small amounts and spread over a higher than average number of days - dull overcast days with 3 drops of rain like yesterday and storms than have mostly delivered small amounts.

It represents about half the average amount of rain that would be expected from Dec 1 to Jan 24.

Thanks for those figures. Interesting.

Bankstown somehow managed even less on 58.6 mm. Ouch.

Residents have told me it is the lowest they have ever seen it (30 years residing here). The water has somewhat reterned back to its normal"ish" level, even with the absence of rain. The smell of exposed seagrass beds on NYE arn't going to leave the memory anytime soon.

The whole lake system desperately needs a proper force flush. One can only hope.

Still very hot and dry, in fact hotter today than yesterday, now 38C;
No end in sight of this weather pattern at the moment.
Only 25C down at Nobbys, gotta get to the coast eventually. (just a bit too far to travel to Singo every day though, cry )

Tbh it's better that they stay over the tablelands for now because if they come within range of the seabreeze which is gusting at 46km/h at Newcastle no chance they would survive.

Same feel as yest arvo. Could get something this time. Swore I heard distant thunder. Far away though. See if the sea breeze backs off. Good tell tale something in the offing.

Looking at 850 temps, the hot air mass retreats Westwards and Southwards after tomorrow. AT 11:00 over Sydney 850 temps are about 21-22, but drop back to 18 the following day and about 16 until the 30th. There's a big cool-down on the 31st to sub 10, although there doesn't seem to be much rain associated with it.

For our area, it looks like six days of above average minima and maxima, about four days of below average than back to fairly typical late Summer conditions. The 38+ have gone for the foreseeable future (i.e. about 2 weeks).

A few of the places I like to keep tabs on as far a heat developments go are Mardie in WA (second hottest Aussie temp on record at 50.5). Oodnadatta ( need I say more) and Marble Bar in WA ( which is still the world record holder for verified number of days at or over the old 100 degrees F. A whopping 160 days in a row back in 1923/24. How is that for a heatwave. Anyway Mardie is a real indicator of heat generation that eventually gets dragged to the east if troughing is right and ridging. Mardie is currently running a few degrees above av for max. A little above for min. Oodnadatta about the same. So heat a plenty to come. Marble Bar is currently a little below for both min and max.

In my old farming days in western Sydney, I always worked on Valentine's day being the end of the heatwaves, let's hope that holds true this year, although I have my doubts.

Marble Bar probably got knocked down a bit by that cyclone recently
