We all k ow not to listen to long range models, so writing off feb based on long range models. Although the BOM has jinxed us by issueing Intial flood watch between Cairns and Rollingstone lol so prob wont see a drop.

Radar looks impressive for CT. I'm in Sydney but my dad just texted me & says heavy rain & thunder & they've lost power.

radar showing a northerly flow being introduced too, hopefully this will trigger it to go off locally, storms stopping 10km to our west. lots of thunder and lightning too. great show.

if last nights conditions cant deliver god knows what will, bar a cyclone. perfect conditions and we get 8mm.
YAY!

the wind flow changed about 15-20km west of us, meaning all the storms coming from inland changed direction and went north before they got to us. then the northerly flow was just off from missing us too around midnight. Hence why areas to our west and north west did better.
Perfect set up and again we get screwed over, there is always something, just wanted a massive wet night mad

http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood/townsville.shtml

if you move the mouse over the alert station you can see the names. the catchment area runs from Calcium to Woodstock to Nettlefield then down to the dam wall obviously.

Townsville was never gonna get much. The set up wasnt for you guys down there. Even the intial flood warning didnt include Townsville and still doesnt include you guys in it. Have to admit I didnt expect a drenching last night considering the moist onflow wasnt meant to hit til later today. Was last night a pre event to the main event lol

more than likely so Wezza, between 50-80mm through the towers to mingela region. 100mm at upper Bluewater, 23 at Dalrymple Rd alert which is about 1.5km from me and i got 10mm. for about 10 minutes i stood out the front of my house and listened the rain pouring down only a few streets away.

so over this, really am with this hit and miss rubbish. in a la nina year we are still yet to have a widespread rain event.

The LA Nina was never gonna be an influence, the BOM has stated many times that the current La Nina was not gonna influence anything either way, may as well just be neutral conditions. So whats the flow like tonight...I can never work out the flow or what not. one thing I fail at when looking at models or radar etc.

I hope the radar plays up for three months. Has there been any impact on the Ross River water feature?

Ross Dam level according to automated tweet at 0300hrs this morning went from 14.6% to 14.7%.
Probably won't get a proper reading until tomorrow morning. So just a 0.1% increase in 24 hours.

had 35mm over the weekend, and that is it now. All cleared up. While there were some highish sporadic falls, sadly a large chunk of the area did poorly yet again.

models indicating about 1-3mm of rain over the next week now and that brings us into mid February. Ext GFS, not that its trustworthy but to give you and idea has 5-15mm through the area the following week.

GFS forecasting temperatures reaching 37-40c next week too.

The Joys of Mother nature. She is ultimately very unpredictable. 100mm for the dam area is awesome and unexpected.

added a few more weeks of water to the supply SBT, all for naught unless we get something dramatic.

A rare but not unheard of sub 20 deg. minimum this morning. Probably the result of a lot of dry air air pumped this way from the recent bout of south easterlies. DP still disappointingly low. Hopefully to change for the better over the next few days with a more northerly airmass.

It was certainly a nice way to wake up! smile Beautiful & cool here now, still raining lightly with the thunder rumbling away in the distance. I dare say things should steam up quite a bit later on though... I'm off to Townsville shortly anyways.

3 month climate outlooks shows...more of the same. Looks like 2018 is lining up as a worse year then 2015. Although the last 3 month outlook showed high chance for above average rain and that failed so maybe we will have the opposite again lol unlikely.

Yeah I recon. The 3 month outlooks this year have been terrible.

Do these outlooks take TC in to consideration.

Drove back from cairns to Ingham last night. That cell that ended up west of Mt Fox was throwing a spectacular light show, it was visible from Babinda onwards.

can see lightning from the cells down near Burdekin dam. good line there, hoping it builds west and keeps moving all night.
however, id go without tonight if it means we get a better chance tomorrow. Awesome set up for storms inland tomorrow, amazing amount of energy and moisture. Just gotta get lucky to make the coast.

At 3am the line of storms was over Cungulla, now its over Yabulu north and out to sea. Totally missed our 50km line of the coast. We get screwed over once again.

We got it smack bang over our head. Awesome light show, loud and now the yard is under water. Unexpected but welcome

awesome bolts to the north on way into work. cant believe this line moved up the coast all night and then missed Townsville. its not like we suffered a week of hellish heat and humidity like the rest of the state or anything, just cant win a damn trick.

conditions today look just as good, if not better, hopefully this lingering cloud buggers off quickly.

Ended up with 80mm from the storm...awesome amount. Another one of them will be awesome. Might then catch up on missed rain. I joked back in nov that the good rain in oct and nov was our wet season...might have been right.

Building up nicely to the east of here. Thunder rumbling away. Hopefully we snag a storm later on. And hopefully Townsville manages to finally get something too!

I’m staying in Mt Louisa for a month, up from Proserpine. Was strange to see such promising clouds today over Mt Stuart only for it to amount to zip, had a big storm in Proserpine last night. Hopefully the “Dome” collapses soon. Maybe tomorrow will bring better luck but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Second day in a row shafted by mother nature, set up looked amazing this arvo, yet nothing formed in the right spots and of course the upper winds werent in our favour yet again.

second time in 24hours the storms skip us and hit ingham northwards.

If there hasn't been a broadscale monsoon circulation over Queensland by April then the wet season has failed.

Current long term forecast for March is that it could be well above average, April above average also (but only just).

was looking ok yesterday, starting to see a slight drop in totals locally, esp on GFS. Brings the upper low off the coast south of us which would be a disaster for us.

Looked like a ripper storm as I was driving to Townsville this morning. It was spitting bolts everywhere! Just in Townsville now, there's branches down all over the place. Quite a few traffic lights are out & power lines down in Charles St.

No surprise it's made such a long journey - these MCC systems that form along monsoonal troughs are the real deal, they don't mess around. Has potential to turn into a tropical low/TC down the track, watching this space.

it will move northwards, create further instability and also increasing the onshore easterly flow, so should start seeing upper and low level moisture.

Wrong thread Kowree..!..this is for our Desert dwelling southern brothers..lol..

Just 15 mm here for now though the amount of rumbling was amazing..

For some reason that I cant explain the models have backed off for us in the Tully/Innisfail region yet Townsville and Cairns forecasts are ramping up a bit rainfall wise.....what a strange wet season..!

line that RD mentioned marching steadily to the coast. for some reason the activity fired up 50km out to sea tonight instead of over us like last night. Plenty of cells raging up to the north, hopefully that line at Pentland makes in the morning.

Nice Wezza, had two good storms in a day here but rainfall wasn't exceptional, still very hit and miss which is basically useless now, desperate for a widespread event for the dams inflow. WATL has good rainfall for us on days 4-8, up to 300mm but i fear a developing coastal trough over southern Coral Sea may screw this up.

Storms are great RD, even better in November/December, should be getting widespread rain events by now. Still, will take anything we can get.

This time in 2014 our dam went from around 40% to 80% in one rain event, not sure how long it was and at the end of April the same year it went over 100% in one event.

we need it to move NW, further inland to get the flow to swing more onshore, currently the lowers are northerly and uppers more north west.

Yup, OCF says 50mm for Townsville tonight and another 50+mm tomorrow.

Just had 71mm in 60 mins in Bilyana from one of those storms heading down towards the Herbie Burdie.

can only hope for similar falls here mate, the cells to our NW likely to move offshore to our north at present.

BOM forecast up to 80mm yesterday, had 8mm, 50mm today had 1.4mm so far. Need to see something locally.

Meanwhile, flood watch issued for SE Qld rivers.

just drizzly stuff here mate, 2.4mm so far today, rackin em up!!

access had the best northerly flow 50km east of us tonight, seems its nailed it with the activity building to the north and over Giru right now. Unless that flow changes overnight we are generally screwed. Most of the area on about 50mm for the event so far when the models had us getting about 150-200mm. Though obviously some areas have done well if you got under a storm.

70mm in gauge this morning for us at bushy beach, loads of lightning & thunder last night. Woke me up & was up wandering, watching & checking radar. About 2:00am we had lightning hit quite close by & led strip lighting underneath back deck hand rail turned on & stayed on. Might be having word to repair guy. 🙂

Good rain in the CBD, but as you say Mick it doesn't really help the dam level.

Nothing for us so far. Wonder if we will get anything up here. Mick what are your opinion for up here.

Has the upper low died now?

no certainly not died, just not moving far enough north west, if you look at the 500km radar, you can see all the rain looping around it, bowen and mackay under a N to NNE flow, thats what we need, so the upper low has to move further inland slightly. Last night the flow was off by about 50km to our east, GFS currently has 150mm in that same area, Cape Cleveland east wards, but only 75mm for most of the Tsvs suburbs, again right on the edge.
Access has decent falls right over us,
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/models/?mt...tate&lc=qld

Access has the upper low several hundred more kms further north than GFS.

it will start weakening tomorrow into a more broader trough than a low as it moves further NW. Hoping this gives us one last chance to get a decent flow tonight from the north

awesome storms forming early to our west, higher ground going off, sadly the flow is pushing them SE, while new cells form to the north in the clear air behind the rainband out to sea. All are moving SE and we playing piggy in the middle with nothing.
Might have to rely on a storm forming inland of ingham coming SE.

Thats why its not as well defined on the water vapour loop if its weakening tomorrow.

Well lets hope something happens especially for u guys.

Also I read upper lows produce rain during the day, why does this one produce night rain.

Charters Towers looking like copping it again shortly. At least the Burdekin is benefitting from the last few days of rainfall, it had a great flow in it this morning & still rising.

Localised flooding along Black River rd, Harveys Range Rd and Bruce hwy north, and down Kelso way.

Cant understand how the heavy part of that cell seemed to stop at Shaws Rd and then not progress east, just stopped and stayed there against the flow, now moving ENE up to Maggie. Doesnt make sense.
Awesome totals about, just again too isolated, bugger all for the dam catchment.

76mm last 24 hours, few kms south 100mm, few kms west 200mm! if that rain had gone into the dam catchment......

anyway dam is at 18% as of 3am, we need a back up event now. creeks are full, soil is saturated.

89mm at home since last Thursday, not bad. Garden is extremely green!!

Most of the creeks were swollen driving back into Townsville this morning, you could tell that Black River had a very good flush.

Some nice storm activity coming in from the NW.

Best of it south of tsv today, central and cbd areas of tsv havent done anywhere near as well last few days. forecast for the next week is very much of the same. BOM forecasting up to 100mm on Friday. district forecast has potential for heavy falls with storms every day. good tropical moisture keeps feeding in.

great photo on the last page, shows how awesome that cell looks, great to see.

Wezza, wasn't me mate.

3.2mm last 24hours.

The upper low has weakened but a trough remains. Instability in the uppers will still create storms.

nothing really forming in the area we need it today, Trav msg me little while ago, said a low had formed over Bowen, looking at radar, looks to be true. EC on the money with the weak low forming there.

I seen a post floating around FB stating townsville was in for over 600mm from Wednesday onwards... LOL!!!!

nice little storm parked over Ingham just now - looks like another one just behind it. Heaps of lighting and thunder, and HUGE rain drops, i actually had to check to see if it were hail!

i am seriously jinxed here, storm was heading directly this way before swining eastwards.

7mm here. Would think willows south to dam would have got 30-40mm.

non stop rumbles from that southern cell.

storm activity has again been too sporadic, had about 10-15mm at my place, yet 2km away has 40mm. Airport is struggling to pick up anything half decent. having said that, im only 40 odd mm ahead of the airport for the month.

Not much for me yesterday. Only 10mm I think. Havent checked weather station read out this morning. Will check its total to 9am later.

Maybe this wet season will be saved if rain continues. Althoigh next months outlook doesnt bring confidence.

flow keeps changing and the storms keep changing directions today. all over the shop. storms to the west are huge, but no chance of making it here.

Forecast looks great still, instability everyday, BOM have best day tomorrow with up to 60mm, surprising as the models show the flow increases thurs into friday, well some models anyway.

Steady rain has developed thru the evening as this low has moved closer, heaviest rain has been over the dam catchment so far which is great news. heaviest echos remaining behind mt stuart down to the dam across to kelso.

its coming to you today Wezza. The BFD is already at 105%, imagine what its going to be like after this low moves across in the next 36 hours.

But - i think the dam will go up to 30%, after tonights effort. With luck and decent ENE flow as the low goes inland, could get it above 50% by end of weekend.

Yeah the forecast for here today looks pretty good! I need to mow my yard at some stage though. grin

Let's just hope it hangs right over Ross Dam for a bit longer as it is needed there more than anywhere.

according to http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65393/IDQ65393.532020.plt.shtml the dam will be over the spillway within an hour or 2.

i think that spillway line is the bottom of the spillway, recording 24 hours ago was 20%, certainly wouldnt have gone up 80% overnight, as much as we would like to.

They’ve confused metres with % somehow. Can’t even see how that’s possible to do.

By way of explanation:

The spillway was lowered a few years ago to its current level of 34.656 to allow for installation of the flood control gates which gives the dam operator more control and the ability to release greater quantities of water as required.

The Full Supply Level is considered 38.60 (100% capacity). As the water lever rises above this point the gates are progressively opened to a predefined sequence (there are three gates) and the level of opening is dependent on the measured rate of inflow.

So still a way to go to 100% (FSL) at 38.60m. Would be good if the BOM page was updated to account for this as it is definitely misleading.

Bring it on and lets hope this upper low stays around for a little longer. Next week looking good too!

RR Dam at 24% and rising. Just what the doctor ordered!!

Quite dark outside, definitely Netflix weather. Still on leave at the moment, so I plan to enjoy all this!

Looks like the Low is centered around Alligator Ck at the moment?

Seriously though. Congratulations. You needed it desperately and I am hope you get some good follow up rains over the next month. As long as you don't get too uppity and beat Cairns.
