There was minor flooding along parts of Cooks River last June I think. I have a soft spot for Cooks as I have fond memories of an old flame and I in the mid 80's having picnics near the velodrome off Bayview av just down from Tempe station. I swam across the river there one day. God knows what muck I got on me. Anyway I mention Cooks cause I came across this article that mentions flooding of it way back in 1889 and states that from the 25th-27th May Sydney received a whopping 17 inches of rain. I presume an ECL was the culprit.

BOM have upped the ante for tomorrow's forecast for Sydney, with "possible heavy falls" and "the chance of a storm near the coast" now thrown in.

I had been wondering that from watching the models. From what I can see there is some cooler air moving through in the uppers and that is increasing instability. We need a lot more upper instability in the forecasts....!

In May 1889, Sydney had a lot of rain:

- 331mm (13.03") on May 27-28, 1889.
- Three consecutive days with over 100mm from May 26-28, totalling 434mm (17.9").
- 513.5mm (20.22") over 5 days May 25-29.

Sydney 1889 Rain

1889 up until that point had been fairly dry.

-----

Tomorrow's Sydney forecast presages 6-15mm, about the same for Wollongong, less for Newcastle. Even the 'T' word gets a lookin.

Definitely need more trees. I guess having traveling about makes you appreciate how fickle and small our bushland areas are, especially in relation to the coast and the pockets protected by the Great Dividing Range. Lots of vast nothingness with very few trees out there.

Bit surprised by the lacklustre amounts forecasted by the models about 1-5 mm given that the clouds now are showing signs of instability and height and generally with cold pools you can get showers extending further inland or anywhere within their presence more so than you can with your pursely onshore flow.

Perhaps the cold pool will largely skirt the coast? Or there are other factors I haven't considered.

Either way, according to the current forecasts it's supposed to be the wettest day in the 7 day forecast so at least it has that going for it. poke

Lot of rain in briefish time frame back then Steve. Wonder when Sydney last saw 500mm in a brief time period.
The NSW record for rainfall measured by rate is 27 mm in 3mins at Warawarralong in Jan 1904. Holy crap. That must have been some cloudburst. http://www.bom.gov.au/water/designRainfalls/rainfallEvents/ausRecordRainfall.shtml

Glorious sleeping weather at the moment, minimums back down to the mid teens, and no aircon for the last 3 days!
More like shoulder season weather, which is perfect, 16-24C today, for early Feb that is unreal.
Hot temps (33-34C) for early next week have now been downgraded, and no day over 30C now until next Thursday.

Nice, a cold pool is all we need for this weather pattern to become quite useful. It's had the potential of rain with S/SE winds and warm ocean temps but it's been ultra stable in the higher levels.

500 in 8 days from 2-9 February 1990 (dates which encompassed that year's Sydney Test).

The 1889 event was definitely drought-to-flooding rains material: 1888 was Sydney's driest year on record, and January-April 1889 had only about half average.

Beautiful sunset Eddy.

----

It was a clear and moonlit night last night around 11:00PM, but there have been some good falls of rain overnight near the coast, focussed on Sydney's East. Sydney OH received 24mm, all but 2mm falling overnight. That is the heavist 24 hour fall there since October 27. It also seems to be the biggest fall in the State. Nearby Chatswood picked up 19mm. Theredoesn't seem to have been any lightning. In any case, I slept through it all.

It's now partly cloudy with some sunny breaks, but the radar is still showing showers about.

It's raining again. OH has picked up another 3mm.

There are some interesting cloudscapes about. Here's a view over Sydney a little while ago:

Looks like we got 2.6mm overnight, ground is wet this morning. Had 0.4mm the day before, so 3mm in total this month. Still need more, we only had single digit figures in Jan (9.6mm), but a start nonetheless.
These milder days though are very autumnish, not complaining there, when early Feb is normally low 30s and hot and humid. (or the continuation of a late Jan heatwave and hotter still, like last year or 2011 etc)

Still the odd shower here too.
The cloud is more lumpy than has been most of the week. Sunny breaks.

Great photos guys.
very very interesting about 1888 dryness Blair.

Thanks Guys, wait till you see the time lapse of last night's sunset.

Just the 0.5mm here so far, had to ride to work this morning and its evident some streets got more than others.

Looking at the radar we should be about to get a good drop.
