It amazes me how hard it is to actually get meaningful rain lately. Even when there's rain about, it's so light and short lived.

Tiboburra's overnight minimum was 30.5. It's forecast max today is 45. It will be interesting to see how far it goes. Skies look clear out there. Record there is 48.4, 2/1/2014 (current Airport and old Post Office sites - since 1910). Feb record is 46.5, 20/2/2004.

----

Early low cloud is breaking up now after a warm night. It's now about 24-25 across Sydney with light winds - Southerly near the coast.

----

EDIT: last night's storm was the first in a month. Sydney Olympic Park at 9mm did the best in the Sydney area and was one of the higher falls in the state. Nearly all other falls were under 5mm. Nearby Chatswood only made 2mm.

The storm season here got off to a good start in late October into November then took a month off. It got going again from early December into early January and took another month off. Last night's effort makes it 17 storms I've seen at or near home this season on 13 days.

Let's hope last night is the start of a new burst of activity.

I've been thinking the same - we've had storms yielding just a few millimetres and some dull overcast days with tiny amounts of rain, but only two or three falls over 10mm this season at most places in Sydney. OH has had 3 days with falls over 10mm in the past 3 months, but much of Sydney didn't get these.

46.5 at Tiboobura is doable. Up a few degrees there on same time yesterday as are some other places, Wilcannia etc. Wilcannia hit 44.5 yesterday. That area copping it.

Getting some decent rain is like asking your mother in law for a loan at the moment he he

Fowler's Gap looks like one to watch already at 41 degrees and has a record of 45.9 degrees which was only minted on the 11th of Feb 2017 lol. Today looks like there will be some convective storms hanging around, tomorrow we should see some widespread action with a weak changing moving through.

I think Wilcannia is a shoe in to break 46.5

46.5 is only a record for Tibooburra. The NSW February record is 48.5 (at Ivanhoe); Wilcannia's record is 47.5. In any case it looks like it might have topped out at 45.7 there, although it's possible that Menindee or Pooncarie (manual sites which won't report until tomorrow morning) might have gone a bit higher.

Thanx for clarification Blair. For some reason I had Tib record confused with Wilc. Yes it has maxed out there. I made a point some posts ago that even if that Feb record of 48.5 was reached it still wouldn't make the top ten for Feb for the whole country.
Do you have any stats yet Blair on the duration and intensity of heat in NSW so far vis a vis past events?

I just had an interesting realisation we've not had a proper easterly trough since December which is very weird and what i could attribute to the lack of rain across NSW this Jan and continuing into Feb.

I reckon the reason no widespread rain has something to do with certain conditions north of the border.

And by that I mean lack of cyclonic stuff in Qld.Not that I have given much attention to the STJ, whether it has been kinked or straight as an arrow of late. But a real bent bit off Qld could lead to something that sends spills over our way

Looks like there's a few showers heading our way.
I say showers, because we've all been so disappointed of late, so many times.
It actually looks a bit better than that on the radar.
I don't want to jinx it.

Bit of lightning about in the western sky and some radar echos heading this way.

See what happens.

Yeh some light showers here atm Sidney, with a few flashes in the sky.
Hoping for a bit more rain to come looking at the radar, although totals aren't amounting to much.
