Hello everyone,
After enjoying what l beleive to be one of the best storm summers here in Melbourne, its time for my girlfriend and l to move North to Port Stephens.
This leads me to the question of what kind of storm potenial surrounds the area? I know little about the local weather paterns, but have checked out some of the chase reports here and it looks pretty impressive. Can l look forward to a more active past time up there than down here?
Any feed back would be great.

Thanks,
Just another Mexican

Hi Chase and welcome to the forum.

I live at the northern end of the Great Lakes shire. Port Stephens got a hammering from storms during this last season .... made the TV news with houses damaged etc. Also, I remember some amazing video footage of a waterspout/mini tornado at Port Stephens.

The nearby Hunter region is usually quite productive .... been some great storms there this season.

There is a home weather station located at Nelson Bay which is on-line with real-time weather most days. Visit http://www.users.bigpond.com/tobbe/myweather.html

Fantastic! Thank you for taking the time to do a reply. Who knows, our path may cross one stormy day. Just look for the yellow Gemini van with far to many antennas on it.

No worries Chase. I notice by your profile that you're a tech and if you have too many antennas on your vehicle I imagine you could be an amateur too. I'm also a tech as well as being VK2AAK so if you are an amateur I'm sure we'll catch up on air one day.

Hi Chase. You lucky thing ! The Port Stephens area is very interesting from a weather view.

The largest NE swing of the NSW coast occurs from Newcastle to Seal Rocks. This results in some very interesting local affects.

Firstly when winds are parallel S/SW to the NSW coast, they are slightly onshore here. Showers that have drifted along the stream finally come ashore here. I am sure this was the case in the Fingal Bay waterspout.

Next the area also pokes out into the moisture a bit more. This is especially important on those moisture marginal days, like late 2001.

Lastly the proximity to Barringon Tops is a factor. Barrington is a great cap breaker and storms form over there before most other places in the area.

Hi Chase, welcome to the North Coast of NSW, though you will be on the very Sthn tip of it. As Andy says, this is a great place to live and the weather is surely interesting. I don't think you will regret it.

Hi Andy. I am a newby to this site and read that you have seen some footage of Port Stephens water spout during the November 2001 tornado.

I am still having trouble convincing my 'lucky I'm with' insurance company that recurring cracks in my house ceiling are a result of that tornado ( 70% of ridge caps and tiles were blown off, ceilings collapsed etc. They can't comprehend the ferocity and subsequent damage caused.

If you have, or can link me to, any pics of the waterspout or subsequent damage to the area it woul be appreciated.

I really have my back to the wall and have to supply some supporting evidence by opening of business next Monday 12 February 2018.

Thank you, Bill Az.

I sympathise with your situation and I wish I could help you but unfortunately I have no video or still shots of the event or the aftermath.
Have you tried the local TV stations such as WIN or NBN? They might have some archival footage.
