Yes it's certainly a cool day in that wind, and a very dry air mass as well. Typical southern ocean front, I hope not too many of these will wreck our storm season like last year.

There is enough south in that wind now to form some cloud. Nearest shower to Jervis Bay is 44kms offshore, so it will remain dry in the Illawarra. Shower bank may creep closer to the coast, which may give Syndeys coastal fringe and northwards the sniff at 0-1mm or so. Exciting times.

I know its been years since weve had a uniform storm season, Its all over the shot now days, Storm season is like frustration season for the coastal fringe the majority of the time now, what ever happened to those days lol?

Last respectable storm season was 2007/08. Last good storm season was 2004-2005. Every storm season apart from 10/11 has been plagued with moisture issues, 10/11 had the moisture as it was La nina, but the cloud bands wrecked it that year.

Haven't been to Copacabana in ages. Storms would look a treat from some of cliff vantage points Andrew. Love the ochre tinged cliffs. A beautiful area.

Thanks WJ, yeah i feel quiet blessed to be born here, it is quiet a vantage point to view cells from Norah head down to Syd harbor.
Fingers crossed for a good season and one more ice blast for you in the meantime, or a late season ECL id love that but by now thats like hoping for pigs to fly

Had a top of 15.7 then the cloud rolled in about 1pm and the temp has been on a slow decline since, currently 13.4c
No precipitation as yet, humidity has been on the increase since lunch.

Once wind got more south the temp rise was contained. Stayed sub 14 here although temp has started rising since sunset. Weird Some cloud but no showers. Hate to be standing in the wind with no gear on. Wind is brass monkey stuff.

There was surprisingly no cloud here this afternoon despite the southerly that was blowing. Very unusual. It was obviously still too dry.

Very cold atm, probably about 5C here. But there's not even any dew on the lawn, courtesy of the dry air. Maybe we'll see our first frost of the year if the temp cools down to the current 0-1C dew point.

Some extraordinary temps reached already tonight. Cooma has dropped to -7.9, Perisher -11, and Thredbo TS -8.7.
Pretty impressive!!!!

Thanks for reporting this, as I didn't even checked those areas for cool nighttime temps. I've been keeping an eye on the NT's tonight, as there was very low DP's there.

Look at the humidity for Cooma. Despite the -6 to -8 temps, the humidity is stubbornly hovering in the 80s. -10C is a good possibly, unless a NE breeze comes up through the night. This commonly happens at Cooma.

Moreso during summer though mate.
The "cooling easterly" is almost a daily occurrence during summer, but almost non-existent in winter.
Forecast low for Cooma is -9 tonight, so we'll se what happens. The temp had actually risen a tad since my last post, although wind remains calm.

Homer.

Back down to -8 at 11pm. I've always been interested in Cooma's climate, because of the amazing variations between summer maximums and winter minimums.

I wonder what the temp would be like on the lake at Jindabyne, possibly even colder? The coldest nighttime temp I ever experienced was on my stay at Jindabyne in August last year. Temp was -6C.

They desperately need an AWS at Jindabyne IMO.

BTW I am talking about the wind the comes up through the night and early morning that usually causes temps to rise through the night, which usually comes from the NNE with speeds usually about 6-13km/h. I think we're talking about two different phenomonons.

Edit: Currently sitting on 5C here (Wollongong Ap), with light westerly

Quite possibly mate, we are talking about two diferent things. I've not experienced many NE's during the night, during winter.
And if you want to keep an eye on Jindy's temps, try this.....

http://www.jindyweather.com/index.htm

or this.......

http://www.jindabyneaeroclub.org.au/yjinwx2.html

Currently -6.1 there.

Thanks Homer smile

Those showers look quite heavy for the Hunter and Central Coast. Possibly even some embedded storms.

I also noticed that Lake Macquarie has picked up 0.6mm in the last hour, while sitting on 4C! Impressive.

Snow at Lake Macquarie possible? Lol. Not likely.
Cooma now has reached/dropped to -8, Perisher -11.8 and Thredbo -9.1. Looking forward to seeing what the A.M. brings.
Would love to sit up all night and follow these temps, but alas, I need to watch the back of my eyelids.

Has snowed on Mt Sugarloaf which is just NW of Lake Macquarie. Sugarloaf is about 400m asl. Not sure if ever snowed in Watagans to the west of LM.
The LM aws is inland at Cooranbong to west of LM and so night time temps unmoderated by water can be colder than lake shores or coast.

E.g Cooranbong at 5.30am 4.5 but Nobbys and Norah on coast 9.9 and 7.4 respectively.

Was a few blasts of rain o'nite. Woke me up. Not sure what time. Bit of cloud about and cold breeze from W.

Certainly cold in Snowies

Yes Homer, probably very unlikely because of the nighttime inversion, but still interesting nonetheless.

We saw our first frost of the year this morning smile It wasn't very much but it was frost. Probably indicative of 2-3C

And look at those temps in the southern tablelands. Brrr.

Minimum temps below -5C

Perisher Valley -12.7C
Cooma Ap -10.5C
Thredbo Top Stn -10.4C
Braidwood -7.3C
Goulburn -6.7C
Mt Ginini -6.3C
Canberra -6.1C
Bombala -6.0C
Nerriga -5.5C
Moss Vale -5.1C

I've never seen so many below -5C temps on the same night

We did well, and it looks like we are at last in for a decent run of golden sunny winter days. Canberra Airport reached 6.0C this morning.
