Warm night. Obs hill still 18 at 2am. Mentioned previously min high record is 18.1 in 1942. What is the timeframe? If it was to get above 18.1 before 9 am this morning at obs hill would that break 1942 record ?

13ish here. Forecast is for 19. Seems a bit low unless wind goes more west. Currently NW and warmish.

Currently 5.6 degrees here this morning, wind is calm atm. Had a couple more temp spikes overnight.

Wind Junkie the temp could go higher than 19, depends on what time the Westerly winds arrive? BOM have Westerly winds arriving late morning for the Hunter, I reckon mid Arvo for here!!

No it wouldn't because the lowest temp TO 9am so far has been 16.3C so if it gets above 18.1C before 9am it wouldn't matter anyway.

It's quite mild here, but absolutely dead calm. I think the pre-frontal band is right on top of here, judging by the satellite and the StratoCu that is overhead. The calm before the storm smile

Thanx reilly. Of course now I see it as I palm my forehead. The min highest is the lowest it got. Duh. Never was good with math and stats. Remember a course I did years ago that involved stats and even the statistics class teacher said he hated stats. lol.

Certainly some wide temp variations eddyg. Prob between 14 and 15 here. Still NW ester.

P.s Just realised how young you are reillyp from info u posted. Talk about 'out of the mouth of babes.' Good onya mate for getting stuck into the weather stuff and for keepin the forum chuggin along. Not easy keeping an old school type of forum chuggin with farcebook grabbing our ever decreasing attention spans.

Yes, I had a feeling the only long term records that would be broken would be on the Far South Coast.I've been looking at Gabo Island's temps on and off this winter and they've been amazingly warm, possibly due to the very warm SSTs that have been parked around there all year so far.

In strong westerlies, it's a lottery as to which stations get the hottest parcels of air. The South Coast has better odds than most because it gets a double Foehn effect, first off the Snowies/Brindabellas and then off the coastal range. However, the double set of ranges also help to block the westerlies when they are anything short of gale force, which is why southerly changes progress more freely and colder nights are generally more common down there. I still think Tathra has the best climate of any coastal district in the state.

Hey Homer - well spotted with that Kempsey temp info!! smile

Yes RP came in flat out, plenty of enthusiasm, smile

Always good to have new people and ideas come in. smile

Occasionally need some older heads to settle some things too. smile

Damn mild here last night as well. Wind quite a bit cooler already this morning. Going for a max of about 9 and we're almost there already (about 7). Didn't drop below 10 until almost 4am, very warm for us.

Kempsey Airport seems to be quite a cold site. (So was Port Macquarie Airport, but from some analysis I've just been doing it seems to have warmed quite sharply in the last 5-10 years; anyone know if there's been significant development in the area between the airport and the town centre in recent years?).

Heat records are a bit harder to break today than they were yesterday, because it was July yesterday and now it's August....

already over forecast 19 here and still wind staying stubbornly NW. Why put out such a low temp forecast given conditions. If NW persists it could get as warm as yesterday. Has front stalled ? Been squeezed?

Relax yer dax WJ, the cold air is coming smile. Temp is struggling around 16 down here now after earlier spiking at 18. We will have to take any cold wx we can get now with both hands, though.

Re. Kemspey and other Airport sites, the screen needs to be well away from any major urban developments such as runways. We all know how warm Sydney Airport gets in a northerly wind regime, i.e. when the flow is off the tarmac.

WJ - agree with DB, cold air will get there. Our temp peaked at about 9.20 am, since then it has fallen back to about 6 even though we now have about 50/50 blue sky/cloud.

Breeze is chilly out here, your turn will come. smile

Well and truly sick of the freeze-wave, 7C again the next few days for Obs hill, even worse in the west with a negative at Richmond .. going by EC the highs finally nudge south from now on meaning a more easterly pattern. Even the seasonal outlook is good news with 80% chance of exceeding the median minimums (Aug-Oct), see how it pans out

On the positive side, one month to go til SPRING !! Can't come soon enough grin

Yes I did notice the easterly setup for late next week, there is some agreement with GFS as well. Hopefully there's some rain out of it (if it even eventuates). In no way does this signal a permanent shift away from zonal weather though, way too early in the year for that.

"Freeze wave"... even for you Bokkey, that's a stretch smile.

No rain. Clear skies with a warm easterly breeze will do.
We'd be perfect if we had Singapores climate. Over there the DP's barely drop below 24-25C, 26C min, 32-33c max. Never have to worry about southerlies, arctic blasts or crazy ups and downs.

Yet, I remember when you were wishing for "eternal-rain", and complaining about a Great Sydney Desert.

Back on topic, the sat pic around coastal VIC looks juicy. Hopefully some of the dregs from that wind up across the Oberon Plateau later tonight. You can have Singapore but I'll take Shooters Hill, thanks.

I'm pretty sure there's been runway widening and extending in recent years to accomodate larger aircraft and improvement in airport facilities (so likely more tarmac/asphalt/sealed surfaces etc.?).
I think Port Home Zone was opened around 2005/2006(ish), though that's about a kilometre to the NE of the site.
For minimum temperatures, the airport is probably in the coldest part of Port Macquarie being adjacent to the swampy/"creeky" flats. All other places in the city are closer to the ocean, and/or on gentle rises or hillsides/hills. In the residential areas nearest to the airport to the east and southeast, I'm pretty sure they were built during the mid/later 90s and early 2000s (they are between 1-1.5kms away though).
For those interested - (Port Macquarie AWS location according to BOM's notes)
Port Macquarie Airport averages: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_060139_All.shtml
Port Macquarie (city) averages (site closed in 2003, about 5kms further east than the airport): http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_060026_All.shtml

Kempsey Airport kind-of sits in a hollow (Gentle/moderate hillslopes are on all sides of the airport except in the southeasterly quadrant where it very gently slopes toward the nearby Macleay River). The AWS is on the far eastern side and isn't too distant from a little creek valley. It seems quite prone to cold air drainage because of its position.
The Kempsey town site (Wide Street), near the riverside, is in one of the lowest parts of Kempsey (10m), but despite not being elevated on a hill or a hillside seems less prone to the cold minimums that the airport records (the airport is further west though, probably makes a difference). Between 1965 and the present, the lowest temp at the Kempsey town site is -1.8C (and averages 7.4 nights below 2C a year). Yet the airport site has only been open since 2001 and has a record low of -3.6C!!! (and averages 20.0 nights below 2C a year)
Last night, Kempsey town dropped to 4.2C (versus the airport's 0.7C). Their minimum averages aren't vastly different, but the differences between each site's Decile 1 mins and record low mins probably tell the story: that when it comes to those coldest nights of the year the airport seems to be favourably situated to achieve these cold temps.
Kempsey Airport averages: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_059007_All.shtml
Kempsey (town) averages: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_059017_All.shtml
