First 'event' in around a month. Bout time. Let's hope it comes off. Squall line looks interesting.

It's also riding along a strong southerly change. Hoping for the rain. We need it.

Cheers for setting up this event thread, Waver Rider.

Well, I see the new forecast has upgraded the coming wet spell to 'event' status. Hope it comes off. The gardens here need it. As do the farmers.

I had a short, sharp shower here about 3:00PM but the later cells missed me. Chatswood picked up 1.0 mm, probably in about 3 minutes.

We'll see what happens. It was 27 on the car thermometer when I got home about an hour ago.

The dewpoints are quite supportive of rain; Penrith is sitting at 22 degrees and OH at 19.8 degrees.

Finally some decent weather to report in this neck of the woods.

Moderate rain for the last couple of hours verging on heavy at times. Rain rates pushing a steady 20mm/hr as well. Also the occasional thunder as well, makes it a lovely morning to sleep in. Definitely much welcomed, been very dry since last March.

Its just going to develop right over the central east....so its not like you are going to see a huge cloud mass coming down from the tropics or something.

Checkout the 950 v 500 level winds to see the advancing upper trough. Its slow moving and collides nicely with a pretty good onshore feed.

Certainly the Hunter should get a good drink tonight I think, but it should be a nice wet day right up the east from the Illawarra.

Finally!!

Very gloomy here with a moderate Southerly blowing, having picked up in the hour or so since I got up. It looks like rain, but according to the radar and the satellite, there's nothing happening anywhere nearby, it's all to the South. Nowra' had 38mm, so far this morning nothing North of Bellambi.

It doesn't look like it's going to rain anytime soon. I think the BoM computer has over cooked it a little.
Just hoping the rain band can shift north but it's been sitting south for a while now and doesn't look like it's moving.

Cool and windy here this morning. Fully overcast from low cloud. Very pleasant after yesterday's heat and humidity. Looking forward to the developing rain band.
Surprising that Bathurst is warmer this morning than anywhere in Sydney, but winds are still northerly out there.

Widespread areas of 25-50 mm's forecast today, extending out to the Central Tablelands and Central West Slopes. Hoping those folk out there and in the Hunter get their share.

Today now just looks like a typical cool, overcast, windy post-Southerly day of the sort that are normally a curse of Sydney Summers, but of which we've had far fewer the in last couple of seasons. I see the BOM have adjusted the forecast max across Sydney to 22, about what it is now. The change must have arrived earlier than expected.

There'll be no convection in Sydney today, although maybe there will be in the Hunter where Cessnock and Maitland are now over 30 degrees in sunshine.

The BOM are still expecting rain in Sydney, so something's going to have to develop overhead.

EDIT: Albion Park doing well with 12mm between 9:00 and 10:00.

A bit of drizzle here in Penrith so far.

20-40mm is a courageous prediction. I am so used to no rain, or well under expectations.

What is the radar looking like?

Fingers crossed it buckets down.

The humidity is real bad Eddy.
Scattered high cloud now stitching together. Prelude to raining later hopefully and not just a thermal blanket for tonight

It's quite a cool change, about 20 in Sydney's West compared to low 30s in the Hunter away from the coast. The change is working its way through the Hunter now. The 22.0 at 9:00 at OH, today's minimum, might also be today's maximum.

It's solid overcast here, but there's no sign of any rain yet. However, a couple of Canberra suburbs have had 60mm+ since 9:00 on top of good falls up until then. A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall covers a swathe of the State from Jervis Bay inland to Young, including Canberra and most of the Illawarra.

Some decent development getting going now over the Central Tablelands.
So that's the next rain band developing I suspect.
It's on the back end of the Illawarra rainband but developing further north so aiming more towards the metro.
Will be interesting watching it all come together.

I know it isn't mentioned in the forecast but what are people's thoughts on some boom crash this afternoon?
Some of the cells developing over the CT's atm are quite juicy.

It's been drizzling here for about an hour, but it's not showing up on the radar. Currently bang on 20 deg's.

Hey Quaggie, that would be starting to hurt. I empathise with your situation. I have been gearing up for a new large tank and buying water....maybe same as you $5k or so before I would give up. Preferably though it wont need to happen at all. I have cleaned out a big old dam that had trees in it and wasnt holding and that will be a drought proofer I think.
I recon that will have to be the last water you buy for a while as there should be some runoff in this for a lot of us struggling. I mean I think we need about 400mm over a month to properly break the drought, but 50mm will be a good start if it indeed happens.

It has been high 20s and super muggy here this morning. Southerly is moderate with scud and sunny breaks. I recon we could see some sparkage Homer. Enough shear to push it to the coast...though LI's are non existent south of the southerly change it seems.
A few cells starting to line Stormy and I up now....

Sign of the moisture in the air is how misty it has gotten last hour or so. Norah temp now matching the dew point so likely some fine drizzle there if some lift. Temp still a fair bit above precipitating out at Nobbys but some lift soon hopefully and it rains.

Well we've certainly not missed out for this event South of Nowra. A surprisingly healthy 82mm in the gauge so far since 10pm last night. It hasn't let up for a second. The occasional rumble too.

The North Shore was getting thick, persistent drizzle for a couple of hours but that's stopped and it's brightened a little. There's a lot of stuff approaching the Sydney Basin from the NW now. The question is, will it fall apart when it comes off the ranges and encounters a layer of cool, stable Southerly air.

I don't think it was expected that southern areas would do so well.

Forecast was 25-45mm here today. We have had 45.6mm in total since 4:30am and there's still a lot more coming.

Canberra had 15-25mm forecasted, 65.6mm was the result for today (doesn't look like there will be any more).

Moss Vale has had 69.6mm and counting.

Maybe Canberra was on the edge of the expected big totals, but GFS has been progging 75mm+ for south coast + Illawarra, so I dont see any surprises there unless you get 150mm+ .

As for the Hunter...The upper Hunter is collecting now. I think a storm for us here would be bonus. The real event in this area wont be properly getting going till 8pm tonight and then overnight.

A nice 25mm storm to get us started shortly would be awesome though.

Is it super drizzle. A cross between a fog and a extremely fine drizzle at the moment. Not really falling. More like blanketing. Like being licked on the face by a pooch. A slobber. A heavy salivation at smelling a roast. An opaque ooze.
I live metres from the lake and can hardly see where it begins.

Amazing the temperature differences around the place atm, everywhere south of me is around the 18-20c mark and places to my north still in the high 20s.

Have registered 0.5mm so far, rain is starting to get heavier now.
Temp 23.8c and falling.

The basin doesn't seem to be getting the forecast rain totals (yet), although BOM still forecasting 15-25 mm's for tomorrow.
Penrith was forecast to get 30-50 mm's today, and has so far received just 9.6 mm's.

Temp has dropped to 18.2 here now and steady rain is falling, but totals are building ever so slowly.

If I didn't know about the impressive totals further South, I might be saying maybe 5 is the new 10 or 20 as far as millimetres of rainfall go. But the Sydney radar has filled up nicely now, it looked a bit patchy last time I checked. Nothing spectacular but maybe a slow, steady buildup is about to start.

For the first time today I can now actually hear the rain falling from indoors.

Sydney OH has now accumulated 20mm over the last few hours, which would be about average for the metro area.

The accumulation at OH today has been as follows:

To 1330: .... nil
1330-1700: 4.4
1700-1800: 9.8
1800-1900: 5.8

It looks set to continue for a while.

Fantastic rain and cold temps - loving it. Called this a few days ago and got rubnished for it - glad it came off. Bellambi AWS looks stuff - no way only 2.2mm recorded. Eascsrpment again would easily have got 100+ in the last 24 hours.

Loving today’s temp min 19 max 19 lol

Olympic Park the wettest site in the basin with 39.6mm as of 8:00pm another site to look out for is the Holsworthy (Defence ) right now at 38mm also and sitting at 165 metres could become one of the wettest in the City over the course of the year.

Seems like the rain helps work up a taste for some refreshments, Quagmelson. wink

Just had a moderate downpour, beautiful. Still raining but not as heavily.

Bankstown AWS seems to have had it's wettest day in quite some time. Still hasn't beat the 60.6 mm from June 8 2017, though!

The radar would have you believe the rain has left the Illawarra coast, but we have quite thick drizzle still keeping the gauge filling (apart from Bellambi...tee hee )

Decent moderate rain here, se’erly streak showers seem to be moving in. Should be some good totals overnight hopefully.

On which subject, Sydney OH, now on 35mm, has had its wettest day since June 8 (when 61). I'd expect that most of Sydney is having its wettest day since June. There's more to come, it might make 50, maybe even pass 61, in which case it would be the wettest since February 8 last year.

EDIT1: the lawns and gardens must be loving this.

EDIT2: Cessnock on 25.2mm and building. Hopefully the 'bushrangers' are getting that.

EDIT3: OH temp just shot up 2 degrees with the switch from SW to ESE..

Yeah it stopped for a little while but it's heavier than it was in the few hours before the rain stopped, despite the rain looking lighter on radar.

The northern suburbs would be getting some pretty heavy rain I reckon.

PS: Temp now warmer than it's been all day right on the coast, thanks to the SEly onshore wind.

Must be something wrong with the Bellambi AWS. Can't surely be 4mm since 9am.

Interestingly Obs hill and Terrey hills are both tied at 49.6mm. Not often that happens on a significant rain day.

Doesn't seem to have been mentioned elsewhere in this thread - Southwell Park, in the inner north of Canberra, picked up 124mm in 6 hours either side of 9am (have seen media reports of 60mm in an hour but haven't been able to confirm these). Off the top of my head I think you'd have to go back to at least the early 1990s for an event of comparable intensity in Canberra, perhaps even the infamous 1971 Woden storm.

I remember when I was at the ANU there was a similar rain event 1990 or 91? Flooding across north and ANU fields.

Been showers all night here and still more on the radar.

March 1989 had similar 24-hour totals (and bigger daily ones because it didn't straddle the 9am cutoff like yesterday's did), but not the same peak intensity.

Wet and miserable. Lovely. Various intensity rain throughout the night. Still comin down. Gosford over to Mangrove Mt have done very well. Not dry breaking by any means in the upper Hunter but this event will be causing a lot of joy. And how good will some follow up rains be. Lets hope so

Good soaking rain, over 40mm so far from this "event", and over 25mm so far at home in Maito.

I just pulled up a weed (one of those cursed farmers friends) and despite the 45mm of rain we have had so far from this event, the ground is still parched at about 35mm below the surface.

What we need is about 150mm just to make up for all these months of below average rain, this event is only a start towards the relief we all need along this part of the coast.

50mm of rain here from this one so far! So nice to have that steady soaking rain.

Still coming down at a moderate rate here in Penrith so there could be a few mm left in it as well.

84 mm so far here for the event - amazing - and still light rain streaming down from NNW - what is causing this stream/plume?

Also, been sitting on 11 deg since early morning - ahhhhh.

Finally!!

Around 34 or so mm here, started at around 11 am and then various showers as the day wore on.

A couple of bits of thunder from time to time but not much.

Started up again overnight about 3 am with light precip. We've had some quite dense sort of very heavy drizzle showers over the last hour or so.

Yes hopeful of something again in the not too distant future.

Get some growth happening out here before nights cool off too much. smile

Some trees out here now are rapidly throwing off leaves and turning colours.

One deciduous in my yard is well into it's yellow phase and throwing leaves rapidly.

The official reading for town has come in at 19mm which is much less than my side of town, the airport had about 35mm which is a number of km on the eastern side of town.

And yes Saturday night for us was WELL above average temp.

Hopefully we will struggle to have nights above 15 from now on or at least after this coming week.

Some totals across Sydney since 9:00 yesterday, mostly after about 2:00PM (millimetres):

Code:
Sydney OH: 71
Chatswood: 73
Sydney Ol Park: 82
Bankstown: 44
Penrith: 55
Campbelltown: 34

Woy Woy (Central Coast) picked up 104mm to 9:00AM.

Drizzle and light rain are still falling, although the main event seems to have passed.

EDIT: the temperature range at OH yesterday was all of 22.0 to 22.1. The change arrived around dawn and it steadily cooled from then. It's now a fairly chilly 18+/- across Sydney.

For once, some rain.

DerekHV, just beware of the readings for Singo.

The readings are now to the military base (-32.70 151.16), which the site is much closer to Broke then Singleton (14kms away directly to the south).

They still do the Singleton STP (Sewage Treatment Plant - only 1.5 km south of Singleton), but now back to only the 9am/3pm figures, but most apps now use the Defence site for their readings.

I suspect that the move may be due to the mine sites that are all west of Singleton, and that by using the Defence site (which is not at the barracks as the original site was), which is at the southern tip of lowest Hunter mine pit is to give slightly mischievous readings saying that the mines do not impact the area.

The Defence site has had 52mm, whereas Singleton STP had only 41mm.

so great to hear everybody got a nice freshen up. Really was a nice event for a very deserved eastern NSW.

We had 20mm to 5pm yesterday. 25mm overnight and another 8mm today. So 53mm for the event. This was bang on expectations for me, though I was secretly hoping to be in the right zone to get a 90+ mm fall. I think its just luck sometimes to get those wins and that win looks to be the southern areas from Goulburn to Canberra and an area from Putty through to Gosford on the CC (similar to last weeks event).

The main dam has moved up for the first time since October and the land and gardens are so thankful.
We need half a dozen similar follow ups now in succession and it does appear we could be lucky looking at the models. Let hope we have turned the corner properly.

Driving in the area this morning its quite surprising how little this rain has done for dams. They have barely moved....but if we had 75mm now, i think there would be some noticeable movement.

Only about 8 foot to and 3- 4 million litres to get my main dam back on track, but we have to start somewhere!

When this was looking like a garden variety change again 10-14 days ago, I was hoping a little pool of cold air I could see in the bite would get spat up into NSW and become a cutoff cold pool. Well there was cold pool spat up into NSW (and thus the event upgraded), but it basically stalled and just rolled through the south. This was actually arguably a better outcome as sometimes the cutoff lows, drag in NE feeds, which just hammer the southern coast with rain, and NE NSW with storms and we get dregs in the middle (Hunter/Met). This setup seemed to ensure that precipitation was shared around a bit more, which was nice.

The rain broke for an hour or so but is coming down as decent thizzle again now. I will take it all, as its finally starting to run off!!

Glad the Daves and Stormy, and Eddy and Quaggie and Derek and everyone else who needed a break got a bit.

Quite variable out here.

Orange had VERY little of it.

Just spoke to a fellow from western side of Bathurst who only had 13mm.

I was lucky to get a decent drink it seems - others did not sadly.

Stopped here, just occasional drizzle, walked to the Mulwaree to watch in flood.

We were pretty bad from here to braidwood until about 6 weeks ago, but I'm now on about 170mm for this year already with 3 X 25mm+ events. Really happy for our locals who were battling extensive grass fires just a few short weeks ago.

Fair enough GR, would love to see them pics one day, if I am ever in your neck of the woods I will call in and say hello.

Top stuff DVC, with Autumn just a few days away, things will be looking much better and greener around your area in a week or two times.

Good to see that you got some much-needed rain. Hopefully more to come in the next couple of weeks, the models look hopeful.

It might be worth looking at Postimage if you want to post more pictures - it's free, quick and easy.

There are patches of blue sky and sunny breaks here, it hasn't rained since about 11:00 and it's warmed up to about 23 degrees. Nearby Chatswood has received 74mm from the event. There's water over the Lane Cove weir for the first time in a while.

Postimage is great Steve. Really makes posting images a breeze. You recommended it to me sometime ago. It is all I use now.
Still grey. But no rain for awhile now. By the look of it though I think a shower or two on the cards. But not wall to wall

I see Casino just had 121mm in the last 2 hours, no doubt some flash flooding there.

So we ended up with 49mm here, still a long way short of what we really need, but hey you take what you can get. Some gentle follow up rain in the next month would be great, fingers crossed.

82mm at glenorie. Tanks are all very healthy. Year total for nearly the full 2 months was sitting on 50.5mm before that. A better than expected rain event. Great news to hear others that needed it got some too. Heavy drizzly showers currently

Some nice short sharp heavy showers overnight, 20.7mm to 9am this morning, event total stands at 60.6mm.

Quite a cool night as well with the temp getting as low 16.7c, one of the coldest nights of this summer, will have to check that out after work.

Here's a map showing total rainfall over NSW for the week February 21-27. Nearly all of this would have fallen in the 48 hours to 9:00 this morning as a result of the 'event' just finished:

Those are some pretty healthy totals over the Eastern half of the state. The map is from the following: BOM Rainfall and River Conditions

It's now a mild, sunny afternoon after being mostly cloudy here until lunch time. The cloud does seem to hang about the North Shore in this type of weather pattern. I see the phantom with the eye-dropper has returned, with OH getting 0.2 after not recording anything in hours of overcast and light spitting rain on Sunday. I note that the Airport picked up 0.4, so it was probably real rain this time.

OH is a hot spot today, having spiked above 26 in the early afternoon.

Great map Steve.
Mild day. Turned out not too warm or too chilly. Sky was a smorgasboard of different clouds today.

Going to be a cold one night, should get down to low teens. It's the perfect conditions with clear skies, light SE winds today and low humidity.

Was fresh here last night in Cooks Gap mate, I think it's going to be a bit chilly again tonight as well, but no sign of any rain.
