Great video J Pabo. Thanks for posting. Nice grounds too.

It reminds me of a hail storm many years ago in Bankstown. We heard hail on the roof and went to the back to check it out. The hail was about the same size as that in the video. Suddenly the family cat came charging down the back yard like all the bats in Hell were after him. He sheltered in the lee of the garage. I called his name and he looked at me at the open back door, then around the yard. He seemed to critically evaluate the situation and decided to make a run for the house. Since that time I've been sure that animals think, even if in a rudimentary way, and can can make choices.

------

The second rainband proved more robust than the first, it arrived here around 6:00PM . There's been steady light rain since, enough to make it worthwhile to dig out the umbrella.

The hunter may get it's 2nd day in a row of scattered/widespread rains. Bit of follow up for them.

ACCESS is hinting at a 1038Hpa high creeping into the bight by next weekend, a significant sign that times are changing.

Great stuff Pabo. Wild

Loads of good cloud going to waste here. Just took an hour spin in the car to Belmont and back and I counted 1 drop on the windscreen. A solitary measley drop. Bloomin pathetic.
Great rain Dave. You sure need it. As does everywhere except the NE of the state. Hope more to come for you.
hmmm. Is that a rumble I can hear.

Drought is over for the hunter. Rain train set up, doesn't look like it'll end any time soon.

Ridiculous call. Typical LRH. Surely he lives in an apartment and has no idea of the real world.

So the Hunter has severe subsoil deficits accumulated over the last 24-36 months.

We have now had around 260mm in the last 8 months.

We had 56mm last week, which raised my dam here under 10cm and it has 8 feet of vertical height to fill. All the other dams locally barely moved also. No water in the creeks.

You throw a mattick into the ground and a puff of dust emerges from an inch down...rock hard

We had 7.5mm overnight and.....

The drought is broken!!! Awesome Im glad someone could confirm that for me.

We all know that the drought only breaks when there is a flood. Just check the river height plots, they are all flat-lined....nothing doing, all soaking in. All the storages need to fill before it floods, and it needs to flood to declare the drought broken.

2.1mm here overnight, frustrating seeing those heavy storms just offshore for most of the night, sure they came onshore eventually, in the Mid Nth Coast region, not the Hunter.

Well said GringosRain.

Very frustrating Eddy. So much h20 dumped into the ocean. Within sight. And a few paltry ml over land. Of course some places have seen more than a few ml and how good is that. Gringo is right that something that fills the holes and then some more is needed. I spent a good decade digging trenches. I had a good view of what lay beneath an inch of topsoil. And how damn hard it could still be down there. I think LRH is maybe looking at a trend coming. A wetter signal. Is he right? As you say Eddy, a big call. But I think Kino made some big calls for Qld and he nailed the flip. Time will tell.

Just on the subject of topsoils. It is well known Australia is the driest of the continents excluding Antarctica. An averaged spread of 600mm rainfall. Along with this dryness is our paucity of topsoil. If all topsoil types were
spread in a hypothetical layer across the continent the av depth would be 25mm. By comparison many parts of China have loam soils 200 feet thick. If Australia was reduced in
size to just land considered arable it would be about the size of Spain. Food for thought.

Sydney's Northern Beaches and Upper North Shore had falls of about 15mm to 9:00, while the rest of Sydney had about 3 to 8mm. Nearby Chatswood finished up with 7mm. It's now mild, windy and mostly cloudy but we're getting some sunny breaks.

The pattern does seem to have changed, rather like it did around this time last year. While there looks like no big rain events for our part of the world in the next couple of weeks, the highs have shifted further South, with a more Easterly pattern. This will allow more troughs to penetrate from the North. A period of normal Autumn rainfall may have started.

It is frustrating, but I think its a sign of things to come.

As for LRH first statement yes, but for his second statement NO.
