Hoping the Equinox can help us get a step down in temps for the season.

We have temps of 30 to 33 forecast for 4 days from Friday - Crazy for March.

Mind you, our Max all time for March is about 35 so it's been warm before. 13th March 1998 @ 35.3 degrees.

At least 33 is not a record smile

The March Equinox this year is tomorrow week:

March equinox 2018 will be at 3:15 am AEDT
Wednesday, 21 March

Today feels decidedly 'Autumnal' with grey skies, drizzle and the temperature, at 20 degrees at Noon, feeling cool. If the Sun comes out this afternoon for any length of time, it will spike to 23-24. Other than today, OH is tracking close to mid summer long term averages (20-26).

Signs of impending Autumn now include:
- dark at 7:00AM on cloudy mornings like today
- NRL on the TV
- Easter eggs in shops
- Flecks of colour in some deciduous trees, e.g along the Comenara Parkway in South Turramurra (a bit early - heat or drought stress?)

21mm overnight and then another 3mm from persistent drizzle all morning with a max of 19c so far. Lovely!

If you are up at 3.15 am on the 21st Steve checkout where the sun is directly above on the earth.

It cleared here for some time this morning; but mizzle has returned, with the tiny pin-prick rain drops.

A below average day. How refreshing. But still no rain.

Well, the 'Autmnal' weather continued all day here, with on and off light rain / drizzle, with a few short, sunny breaks in the early afternoon.

Another 'Autumnal' phenomenon I've noticed - the beautiful, deep purple tibouchinas are blooming. I think of them as the anti-jacarandas. While the latter herald the start of Summer, tibouchinas mark its end.

Of course, this type of weather happens in Sydney any time of year, including 20-21 degree maxima, even in high Summer (to the dismay of many Sydneysiders, tourists and ice cream vendors). Thinking of today as Autumnal is just a cultural construct.

The 1983 record is more common for places with longer term records.
Don't think too many daily records for March are under threat with the coming heatwave, although Singo could go close to the 2015 record. (records only started in late 2002)

Cant believe the Mona Vale total of 113mm to 9am this morning.
Of course I have to be away with work.
Some other good totals around the place too.

Welcome drizzly day. 5 deg under the prediction is great.

Some ornamental pears now putting out their spring blossoms...totally confused. They have probably been dormancy/survival mode with the terrible heat this summer. Then it cools off and rains...must be spring!

But what the heck is weekend heat all about?? 39 for Penrith? Bugger off!! grin

The last 24 hours have been really satisfying in the sense that instead of watching incoming rain fall apart as it gets closer (story of the last few months), there is convergence and development right near us

Steady light rain here for the last hour or so. The showers are redeveloping over parts of Sydney. There might be some decent totals overnight. Also some showers near Seal Rocks, but nothing much elsewhere.

--

A2A - a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. Strange how localised and slow-moving that disturbance was last night and still is. It was totally unforecast, especially the 250mm patch out to sea. That might have been too much of a good thing over land.

Knot - I'll check that Sun link on the equinox but I don't think I'll be up at 3:15AM.

EDIT: rain rate picking up.

Wouldn't quite say totally unforecast, but perhaps on the higher end of expectations. smile I recall EC predicting yesterday there would be localised heavy falls overnight along the coastal fringe of Sydney.

The Hunter is getting some of the shower activity as well, coming in from the NE.

Heavy, warm rain coming off a warm ocean.

And that warm ocean giving us an almost 23 here at 2.40 am in mid March.

@Derek. 1983. Another El Nino of note.

First 14 days of March at Nobbys running just slightly below the record for averaged min set in 1956.
