Eastern NSW will be experiencing what is likely to be a final burst of heat for Summer 2017/18 over the next few days, or at least of severe heat. The heat will peak on Sunday 18th, with Westerly winds looking strong enough to bring the heat to the coast. It is a very hot air mass for this time of year, with 850 temps over the Central Tablelands and central part of the coast over 24 degrees on Sunday afternoon.

Late season heat records are at risk, with Penrith forecast to reach 41 on Sunday, compared to its current record of 40.6 (13/3/1998 - records since 1995) and Richmond's record of 41.9 (old site, 6/3/1938). In fact, a number of late season heat records might tumble, possibly including Sydney OH if the sea breeze doesn't arrive.

The heat will be short-lived. Penrith will get three days of 35+ heat, Parramatta 3 days of 32+ and I expect that Sunday will be the only day to pass 30 at OH, although it will be a doozy for this late in the season.

There'll be a weak change late Sunday, followed by a stronger change on Tuesday. There does not seem to be much likelihood of storms or a much rain with either change.

Here are a few forecast maxima for the 17th-19th:

Code:
Newcastle: 31, 36, 28
Maitland: 37, 40, 35
Sydney: 31, 38, 29
Parramatta: 34, 39, 32
Penrith: 37, 41, 36
Bathurst: 33, 34, 32
Wollongong: 29, 39, 28
Canberra: 33, 33, 28

-----

From late Tuesday onwards, significant rain looks set to develop on the mid North Coast, possibly extending South to the Central Coast, with lighter showers further South. Unfortunately, that appears to be mostly coastal. It might prove worth its own thread.

Going for 41c here on Sunday. If it eventuates that would mean Dec17, Jan18, Feb18 and Mar18 will all break their max temp record consecutively. Incredible!

Slow start towards a 37C day, but just starting to feel the heat now. Gonna be one hot night tonight though, by the looks of it.

Yes, I think tonight will be very warm, although the forecast, at 21-22 minima for Sydney, is nothing special.

It's about 25 across Sydney, with clear skies and light Westerlies. There looked to be a cloud band approaching from the W-SW, but it's rapidly evaporating as it crosses the ranges.

The NE'er is up and running at Bellambi. It will arrive at OH in an hour or so, capping the temperature to within a degree of whatever it reaches by then, but it will warm up quickly out West after midday.

EC and GFS are still going for a big but localised rain even around the Hunter or lower mid-North Coast mid next week, GFS a lesser event further North.

Gradient level winds are more W-WSW today which works against early sea breeze development on the Sydney coast, at least that's been my observations in the past. It should be one of those days where despite the slack winds the westerly hang on that little bit longer.

Tomorrow looks like it might be a bad fire danger day, possibly a total fire ban. Very unusual in our part of the world for March.

Code:
Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands,
Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:41 am Saturday, 17 March 2018.
WINDY CONDITIONS ACROSS SOUTHEAST NEW SOUTH WALES ON SUNDAY

Weather Situation: Vigorous west to northwesterly winds are
expected ahead of trough and cold front that are expected to move
across southern and central New South Wales during Sunday. Winds
are expected to be particularly strong across the southeast.

That Westerly is hardly there, just a couple of knots, but it's surprisingly persistent. It's now up around 29-30 over most of Sydney, feeling a bit sultry in the relatively high humidity (in the 40s percent range). CS22 seems to be right.

I think the hotter air is still inland and will arrive later, for example Orange 28 (34 at sea level), Scone 34.

Wow EC is really going for a change in pattern with the rain event next week that focused on Sydney and Hunter and then after that a cloudband that look to bless the entirety of the state. On another note these Westerlies will not give up.

I think the rain event is on. It's just a question of exactly where. Hopefully it focuses on the Hunter where it's most needed.

----

The NE'er is established on the coast, but it took a while to get going. It looks like OH peaked just short of 32 at 1:23PM. Western Sydney is now around 33-34 with another with a way to go, it's 34-35 in the lower Hunter and about 30 in Bathurst and Orange.

See breeze keeping a lid on things here, was at Maitland this morning till about lunch time, it was slow warming up out there, but looks to have kicked on after lunch.

I reckon this rain event is on for next week, maybe rename this thread to Final Summer Heat then rain perhaps?

Slow heating, that is for sure, maximum is after 4pm.
Looks like 36.3C, but may have got the forecast of 37C if 36.5C or above was reached, even if momentarily.

The latest GFS has shifted the rain bullseye further North, but the new forecast shows some big totals for the period Tuesday March 20 to Saturday March 24, especially in the lower Hunter, but unfortunately restricted pretty much East of the Divide:

Code:
Wollongong: 20 - 65 mm
Canberra: < 10
Sydney: 35 - 90
Penrith: 35 - 95
Bathurst: < 10
Newcastle: 65 - 175
Maitland: 55 - 140
Cessnock: 35 - 115

About half the expected rain looks set to fall Wednesday.

I will ask a moderator to extend and rename the thread to: "NSW/ACT - Final Summer Heatwave then Rain - March 17-24, 2018".

EDIT: There's a total fire ban on for East-Central and SE NSW tomorrow, with severe fire danger. Sydney and Wollongong have been upped to 39 for tomorrow.

In fact some kids were wearing jumpers, mind you it was 7.30 in the morning with a light westerly blowing.

Looks like 36.4c was the top for Maitland.

Thanks Steve777, I think it will be more fitting to have one thread, least we will know what happened in the days leading up to this rain event.

I agree.

I think it needs to be a separate thread for the upcoming rain event.

Definite sea breeze in now, at 29C we are the same as Williamtown.
Meanwhile further up the valley at Singo it is still 36C at 6pm.

It's probably because of those late September rains have really helped the moisture of the trees and grass lands and as Stormy put it before we've been having a 'green drought' . Hence less fire danger.

I say green drought as there has been enough rain to green the grass up, but the rains we had here was'nt heavy enough to fill creeks or dams.so we here are still in drought.

Tuesday looking a little unstable for the Hunter, gee I really hope we get to see a storm.

So a few sites in Hunter reached 37. Warm still beside the lake. Was interesting today seeing the variable direction and variable speed of the wind at various places on the lake. A languid south easter at Fennel Bay. Virtually no wind a little later at Eleebana with just a hint of nor west. And at Belmont a spinnaker filling easterly. Forecast for Nobbys tomorrow is 39. Which would equal the 83 record.

Already 30 in some centres like Albury and Griffith.
Windy TV predicts change reaching Sydney around 9pm and up here by 11 or so.
So a frigging long hot day coming up with some relief well after dark.

It's a calm, clear, sunny morning after a mild but not particularly warm night. A beautiful morning. If I didn't know the forecast I'd never guess what's coming.

The heat seems to be out West at the moment, especially Southwards: in Griffith it was 30.5 at 8:00 after a minimum of 27.7; also aloft - Orange and Mt Boyce were on 21 at 8:00, equivalent to 27-28 at sea level.

Technically astronomical summer ends shortly. But given what this month has been like I wouldn't say this heatwave is the last hurrah of summer like heat.

Will be interesting to see how many places challenge their March daily records today.
No long term records at Maitland Airport, so 40C if reached will be the record. Tocal has a fairly strong record from 1983, as does Williamtown.
Cessnock AP and Singleton could get close though to March 20, 2015 records.

Yeah A2a a cut-off low and cold pool, linking up and drawing in a low from the Goc is about the most ultimate setup for rain you could ask for. At least the uppers are doing something for us to watch

GFS has backed off totals for around here. Im never overly confident if GFS is tetchy on the event compared to other models. lets see if can ramp things back up. Its not so keen on anything after this either....but Access seems to show a cutoff low over eastern NSW.

Its 26 degrees and sparkling blue here, hardly a breeze. Pure magic really. Lets see if records tumble.

Had nearly forgotten about Scone, not sure if it will quite get to the 1998 record, which is a strong one, but will have to watch closely today.
Sydney OH will be interesting too. The 1983 record is possible. 1998 records in western Sydney are going to be close too.

Scone 41.2 in 1998 the Hunter region max record holder (If the Jerrys Plains 42.8 also in 98 is excluded. I think Blair Trewin commented about Jerrys Plains stats somewhere in the dusty WZ annals). Tocal has a 41 from 83

I think the NWlies will come eventually, even if it may not even be until the mid afternoon. Although I am slightly doubting 40C as well, the hottest part of the airmass won't hit til the arvo. Temp is plateauing at 31C here so far.

Looking at the models though it should be an easy 40-41C across the basin at around 4pm ish.

Btw tomorrow should be pretty warm too. Pretty hard to tell what the exact temp will be but should be around mid-30's if the very weak easterly sea breeze does not make it through. Forecast of 37 seems about right for Penrith.

Sydney's West got off to a slow start because of inversions. The NW'er is also off to a slow start, although it's blowing 20-25 knots at Bellambi (where it's 32 degrees).

It's around 30-32 at most Sydney sites, with sea breezes trying to get going right on the coast. I think the NW'er will win out.

I think the NWer will definitely win out Steve. Sea breezes may get going but at some point in the afternoon they will get wiped out by the strong westerly/NWly.

Anyway, they're off now, Richmond at 34.7 has warmed 6 degrees in an hour. Penrith still lagging behind on 30 but catching up. The flags on the Harbour Bridge (and looking out the window) show a brisk NW'er.

Hitting 40 somewhere in Hunter this arvo a shoe in I think Derek. Maitland leading the pack. Partic as that Nor wester picks up and forces the aloft heat down.

Lol I am glued to watching this event unfold. Too damn hot to be out in it. Got the fans running cranked up. Coldies in the fridge. Stats on tap. Pure Bliss he he

Yep, the old Richmond RAAF weather station that closed in 1994, 400 metres from the current one, often gets forgotten.
Hence the blip in January this year with the BOM's tweets about Penrith.
The current Richmond RAAF's March record is 40.0C from 1998.
Things have just started to take off again here, after a steady last hour, Williamtown the first past 37C. (a fair way to go there though to catch the 1983 record)

With not even a hint of westerly in Sydney yet the temp is just under 40 at Holsworthy. I think the Richmond record is under serious threat now. Which is extraordinary and downright freaking scary for this late in March

Quite breezy outside with the NWer at 39.00 degree's at Bankstown. Could probably be the most breezy hot day all season as the other hot days were relatively still in comparison.

Looking at the forecast the only plus is the rain coming mid week. Still struggling to see the signs of autumn aside from the later sunrise and sunset as end of the forecast we're up to 27 degrees.

I'd like to see more widespread rainfall across the state and continent. Until that occurs I will struggle to see a huge shift in patterns.

By and large looking at the rainfall forecast the rainfall across the country seems to predominantly teeter around the edges or be sporadic rather than any widespread falls from or in the interior parts. Quite sad looking forecast rainfall maps to be honest.

Can't say that necessarily bodes well for a cool down throughout the continent, either. Guess we'll wait and see.

Green Cape actually has a new all time record for any month, 37.4 (old and new sites). I suspect that the data does have gaps, and 1993-1999 are missing.

The car thermometer was showing 38 a little while ago. That's consistent with readings around Sydney. I think that 40 might be a bit too far off OH now. So far it has peaked at 37.7 and may go a bit further. As mentioned, Holsworthy has passed 40, a couple of other Sydney sites might.

I see live NRL (Brookvale) in the TV schedule. It's probably not a great day to be playing NRL.

Drove from Bexley North to Chatswood and back on freeways between 11:30 and 2:30pm.

Going there car thermo was 36-37C most of the way.
Coming back 40-42C (with the 42C at Kingsgrove)
4-5C increase during that period.

Suspect my car thermo is still about 2C too high in the heat.

Badgerys Creek joins the basin 40's club.
40 might be a bridge too far in Hunter now.

Exactly right Steve.
My son's football trial (soccer) scheduled for this morning was cancelled yesterday. Sensible decision.
I cannot believe there is no duty of care these days in these situations. It is insane to be playing an NRL match today in these conditions.
I do not think it is being alarmist to suggest that it will take someone to die before this insanity is realised.
This has more to do with the TV broadcasters and the billions they pour into the game than any issue of player welfare.
I'm listening to the RL radio coverage atm, (2MMM) and they are discussing that there hasn't even been a drinks break announced at the half way point of each half and how crazy that is. They just reported the temperature at Brookvale as 38 degrees. Probably correct considering Terrey Hills is currently 36.8 at almost 200 mtrs asl.

Crazy stuff.

They are highly trained athletes Homer, they have been training all summer for this. I do agree they should have drinks at quarter time though.

Agreed they are elite athletes. Still not convinced it is in the athletes best interests. And you know me......I'm no PC advocate.
Ultimately, I'd be shocked if they don't at least have the half/half drinks breaks.

Continuing the sporting theme it looks like a trophy for hottest temp in the Hunter today goes to Williamtown with a respectable 38.7.
Holsworthy Def the trophy in Sydney. But nothing for the record books . Unless a very late upset in the heat race

That's really interesting and that it occurred today of all days. Obviously most other times there's a southerly change before the heat can build or winds are too northerly (off the ocean). It's also likely the only place on the NSW coast that has not achieved 100F.

The rain event is still on, but it's now mainly North from about Wyong, including the lower Hunter, Myall and Port Macquarie areas. Forecasts for the Central Coast northwards include the 'T' word for Tuesday. Newcastle is up for 60-130 mm, Cessnock around 35-90, with most rain on Wednesday.

In Sydney, it now just looks like showers over a few days, adding up to about 15-35 mm.

Maybe there'll be some 'spillage' further South. We'll see.

----

I think today's results are in: the 40 club includes the Airport (40.5 - highest in Sydney), Badgery's, Bankstown and Holsworthy. Camden, Campbelltown and Richmond got to 40 rounded but no cigar.

OH finished at 38.4 (101.1F), only the third 100F after March 9, the hottest March day since 2004 and the hottest for the second half of March since 1940.

The hottest in the State looks to be Bourke at 41.0.

Doesn't look like any new records in Sydney.

No March records broken around here, seemed to run out of puff around 2pm when things normally taken off.
Tomorrow could still be very hot for the Upper Hunter though, places like Singleton and Scone may get a second shot.

Not really caring about 'records being broken'. It is oppressively hot for those who don't have air-con at home. Also I agree, 20 min drinks breaks should have been ruled in during the NRL match.

Looking forward to the cooler temps tomorrow and for the rest of the week. This is pure hell.

You are not wrong there, and even having the aircon on all day is not that much fun either, esp when it has been on for nearly the whole of summer, bar a few brief reprieves.

I personally think it's quite pleasantly warm outside now. The wind has dropped completely and sun has gone down here. About 35C now.

The temp may well drop quite quickly here with the lack of wind and dry air.

Yeh records are kind of incidental to the actual heat experience. But they are still a big focus because it is a record breaking thing that makes the event a significant event.

Of the long-term sites that I track closely, the only March record was Point Perpendicular, with a late-season record for Richmond. Will be interested to see how the fire danger index at, say, Bega compares with historical records - hopefully will be able to check this out tomorrow.

Waited down at Cronulla way beaches for the sea breeze.
A nice cool 22C under the water.
Surf was awesome at Elouera Beach
Beach fisherman were catching a good feed for dinner with the hardly any breeze at their backs as the sun went down.
About 8:15pm at South Cronulla there was a light puff of cooler wind from somewhere.
Possibly just a Northerly puff coming from across the water.
Got home with the SW change not far behind us.

Haven't checked my March records but nothing special here either - 38.4 was my high. Bitterly disappointed I couldn't crack 40. The painfully slow climb by 2pm made it evident that the air mass just didn't have the guts to break records.

BUT

The let down of no records was made up for with the mighty Sea Eagles giving Parra a flogging. smile There were some elite athletes out there at Brookvale Oval* but I didn't see any in blue and gold!

Still hot here in Sydney Town and winds are calm. Change should be through soon.

Twin changes. That's interesting and unusual. The SW'er is now on the Central Coast. The SE'er is working its way through Sydney. No big temperature drop yet, but it's windy and no longer feels like an oven outside when is was 33 with no wind.

It would be a strange temperature map on the coast. Pockets of heat like OH until a little while ago, places where one or both changes has arrived, places with sea breezes and areas experiencing inversions in calm conditions under clear skies (e,g, Cooranbong).

And, as I said earlier this week, we are only two weeks out of summer.
Sure, it's uncomfortable,

There's a few days left in summer by my reckoning. smile

If you Google "start of Autumn", for example, it'll tell you Wed. 21 March: the Autumnal Equinox.

I've been using the solstices/equinoxes (astronomical calendar) to mark the change of seasons for years; it seems a better overall fit to actual conditions than the (meteorological) calendar definition. e.g. "Indian Summers" in March.

The three weeks difference is quibbling, but I feel more comfortable using a geophysical marker than a (derived) administrative one.

Im pretty sure that's how northern hemisphere countries observe there seasons? e.g. America/ Canada / UK ? Unsure why we have never followed suit? However if you look at average temps for most capitals, the hottest 3 months are Dec, Jan, Feb.

The thing is also, this late in the season you know that it will probably be one of the last occurrences of major heat. I would be rather surprised if we saw any more 35+ degree days.

My top temp yesterday was 33.2c, it was a mostly calm day, one minute you would feel a Norwester breeze and the next it was a Noreaster it was that type of day.

South-west change coming through now.

Apart from the heat the surf was pretty good over weekend.

Four young people had to rescued by long board riders at Warilla Beach about 3.30pm.

What gets my goat going is that this Dad (if that's an appropriate term) who had muscles like he lived in a Gym and tats to rival an outlaw biker - in fact google drug king pin and you have a match, brought his 3 daughters (looked about 9 to 16), down to the beach and setup and swum just 150m from the flags.

The surf was smaller in afternoon, but a long period ground swell. All Ok for first 30 minutes on a sand bar just metres from a nice rip, a couple of sets and they are off the bank in the rip and sailing out at a rate of knots. Severely in trouble, the rip was like a set of rapids.

I was actually there at that time and did not see it!! Agreed the surf was brilliantly clean there and a nice mixture of left and right handers.

Stormy we could be on mate. Models are tightening up a bit around the Hunter. Could finally be the runoff rain we have been waiting for. I will take the full 200 please.

A pleasant 27c here, a lot of dust in the air around here today, visibility not the greatest, winds have been light and mainly westerly, shouldn't be too long before it becomes a sea breeze.

Today marks our 9th March day of 30 or more. That is 3 times as many as the long term average.

A slim possibility it might scrape 30 tomorrow as well - just mind boggling.

March last year we had 1 day of 30 - made up for it this year shocked

Should be a pleasant night of 10 or 11 tonight, house is warm though so we won't really notice the cool night.

Got quite breezy again this afternoon.

Meteorologist David Brown from Ch 7 is calling this event the 'autumn break', substantial rains will affect large parts of E NSW followed by a bigger system early next week.

In Sydney's East today, it was a sunny, pleasantly warm day with sea breezes from about lunch time. It was cloudy when I got up but that was just thin marine layer left over from the Southerly, which quickly burned off. It reached 34-35 in the outer West, 31-32 in the Middle ring and only 28 at OH.

Anyway, that's it with heat for the time being, probably for the season for major heat.

Long Road Home has set up a separate thread for the upcoming rain event, so we won't be extending this one.

Got to 33C today, a warm and muggy day.
Had to go into Newcastle during the middle of the day (Adamstown), was around the 30C mark, but humid.
Aircon is going on as per usual, until this mini heatwave ends.
