Quite gusty in Bilyana this morning. All eyes are obviously on ex-Iris, hoping that it moves South of here - we don't need any more heavy rainfall for the time being.

The last thing I would want is wind. Can you imagine how much damage could happen by falling trees in Cairns if you get some strong squalls now. I hope you don't get much.

Too soon to tell but looks like ex TC Iris will give all the good rain to the south? Thoughts? What are the probable scenarios? I know there is a thread on this, but I need easy-to-read terms smile

Ok, so I spent my long week painting. The sweat was everywhere, purely gross weather. When do we expect it to dry up (lower humidity) now that its early April?

Seems like once this passes she is done for the year, seems .....

After the last decent wet of 10/11 there were very dry years, I really don't need extremely dry years from here on, more likely than not tho, Australia being Australia

Don't count it out till the end of April DU. Still hopeful for a wetter than the past 2 years April up here.
I think Tinaroo will spill before the end of April too. That would be the perfect end to the wet season!!!

Extremely dry, apart from all the slopes springing water like someone turned the taps on down in the subterranean.
Five days without rain..went mad mowing the lawns real short last Saturday and my comment in diary (yes, pitiful I know) - "Mowed the lawns - Heavens knows when they will be dry again."
The time when Iris was just a mere Tropical Low 340km east of Cairns.

7mm overnight.

Mostly from light showers started around 5pm. Very still here.

Monsoon still looks reasonably active to the north, perhaps good for a final hit in a week or two.

Models shifting Ex Iris crossing between Cape Flattery and Cairns. Access has her a bit further north and not really moving for 3/4 days.

Looks possible that Tinaroo will spill by the end of the weekend or sooner if the models get it right. Only about 6.5% to go.

33 degrees, 46% humidity, and a lovely cool breeze wafting through the doorway at regular intervals.

Blue skies with big puffy clouds to the north, darkish to the south. Did a load of washing but don't know whether that will bring any rain or not...

Get my car serviced in Atherton, early morning, and I *always* forget to have my hoodie accessible.

A typical trip to Cairns can involve having the aircon flat out on cold to flat out on hot, multiple times, as I travel through several different climate zones. grin

Had a nice Storm cell pass us by about 9-10 last night C@28 which originated just North of you , some lovely bright flashes and distant rumbles from it and we just caught the back end of it as Angel Peeese as it headed off towards the Carbine Tablelands after 10 pm.
Had some very steamy days over the last week here as well, very still and opressive which is making me think the Wet is not over yet, would hate to be on the Coast North of Mossman lately seeing as it's April already.

Nothing exciting out here. Just nice temperatures and a comfortable amount of humidity. (Not looking forward to low humidity at all.)

Caught the edges of something a couple times, enough to bring the laundry in twice, but not really wet anything.

4mm of fairy pee yesterday arvo , has done nothing to help the situation ..

cheers

SOI continues to climb, kind of after the event really. Maybe its staying damp in the future, somehow I doubt that

Had some very cool nights the last couple, bit of a desert weather system earlier on in the week with very hot days and cold nights but more of an Autumn set up over the last couple of days now with the humidity dropping off heaps and cracked lips setting in type nights.
Wouldn't be surprised if we get a decent lot of rain before Winter set's in though with X Iris looking good for another incarnation.

Very autumny here too last few days. Had to put on a light sweater last night.
Not looking forward to cracked lips and dry skin although the change in weather will be nice.

Yeah quilt back on the bed last night. Lips getting that dry feeling. Weather is beautiful though a little breezy in the arvo at the moment.
Looks like we could get a little rain over the weekend and into Monday. Only need a little to keep the pastures growing and a little to spill Tinaroo. 5.8% to go!!!!

Certainly starting to cool a little at night.

Looks like Sunday may be a little wet around the region. Might be the last decent drop for a bit?

Stars are starting to look nice and crisp in the night sky now. Dry air above. I think we can finally call the wet season officially over. All in all it was a pretty good one(apart from the travesty that was December), but lets not speak of the cyclones wink

About to get a quick shower to wet, (dampen) my 2 loads of washing.
Also, ran around with a bit of poison to bowl over some weeds just before dark. It's had well over 6 hours, so maybe not all in vain.

Yeah Scott, neighbour reckons it bucketed down for a couple of hours. I see the BOM’s gauge must be out in Sth Mission. Big falls in and around Tully Heads as well. Mate just told me he has had 155mm since 9am. Still solid rain here atm.

Scott, slowed down a bit now. Probably another inch, too dark to see and in me pj’s mate. Staying inside.

There has been a lot of rain through that Euramo section. A little surprising really. The amounts I mean.

We do well this end out of the Easterly flow, not so good out of the SE flow. I wonder if Hinchinbrook has something to do with it?

Yeah I reckon being on the leeward side of a 3600 foot mountain could have that effect Sf...

The bonus is that even when the tradewinds are blowing 15-20 knots you can still find some fishable areas around the Family islands Dunk and the northern end of Hinchinbrook island....

Sometimes during mackeral season I make the mistake of seeing that its pretty flat off Clump point and head north to the fishing grounds off the Barnard islands only to run into quite nasty seas and have a bugga of a trip home at 10 knots or less into the Sou'easter that's skirted around the eastern side of Hinchinbrook.....its sometimes made even worse if the fish schools have been at the closer and flatter bait grounds off Dunk island that day..lol

77 mm here for the 2 days..

Gets dry real quickly. Last rain was 11mm on 28th March. Nothing since then.

Water restrictions since last year:
https://msc.qld.gov.au/water-and-waste/water-information/water-restrictions/

Be interesting to see if we make it through this coming Dry.

Dry Season before last the creek dried up, the first time in 30 years, or 60 years, depending on who you talk to. That was an awful dry season. We haven't had a good enough Wet Season to properly flush the creek and replenish the water table since Yasi.

Sorry to hear that mate, the situation sounds dire out that way.
Hopefully the underground bores can be filled from trickle down water through the rock layers.

It is like someone flicks a dry season switch at the beginning of April each year up here. 21 days since any real rain now. Fired up the sprinklers in one of the paddocks this morning. Have to beat the wind.

BoM saying the MJO will continue to weaken as it heads east and becomes indiscernible before it reaches Australian longitudes,- but to my untrained eye it looks as if it's doing OK at the moment.
Also, in the last week or so, is the fastest I've seen it move for a long while.
Time will tell.

Extremely nice weather here at Utchee, a few days of rain totalling 77mm, fog in the mornings and so redolent of autumn down south....without the thought of the six months of a hard, cold, wet winter.

Just under 10mm last night, Aloomba apparently over 20mm. Shows how quick those showers fade after coming in off the coast.

Yeah it was pretty crazy RF. My neighbours, who have lived in the house for over 40 years, said it was rare for the the river to get that high. They did say it has been higher though and where I took the pics I shared here I would have been at least 2m under water.

According to NOAA, as of Mon 16th April:-

1.) The MJO remained active during the past week. It is now in RMM phase 2, emerging over the Indian Ocean.
2.) The GEFS forecasts the MJO to slowly propagate into RMM phase 3 and then weaken during the next 2-3 weeks.
3.) In sharp contrast to the GEFS forecast, our constructed analog statistical model forecasts the MJO to continue propagating around the globe without significant weakening.

So for us in phase 5,- take your pick.

Fridge door was a little ajar in G'vale last night, noticeable coolish this morning

SOI remains very high (for this time of year) - fore teller of what the MJO might be worth when it arrives? What date range is MJO phase 5 active in our area?

Looks like we are moving into that winter weather where you wake up and think “why would I live anywhere else” . Boring from a forum point of view but brilliant.

Wonderful big roiling puffy clouds earlier this afternoon.
With other sort of rainy clouds going the opposite direction, disintegrating after dropping on the rest of you. grin

Made for a nice pleasant day, not too warm at all.

Mornings are cooler for longer.

Picked up around 5mm this afternoon from the odd short, sharp shower. Take it while we can as the next week looks pretty dry.

Flanny shirt on at 9pm last night, and again tonight.
When I went to bed at 4am, I dragged the doona out of it's summer time storage bag,- and glad I did.
It's not even May yet. Global warming, my arse.

Surprised here too.
Good pruning/gardening weather yasterday and forgot to bring out the doonas from the container so...4am this morning finds me searching for fresh batteries for the flashlight and dragging them in.. can't take another cold morning. Almost expect frost!

Yeah, I know, spoilt up here, weatherwise.

Never look forward to the Dry Season winds. But I've got a little bit of windbreak growing along the bottom fence now in the hope of slowing down the whirlwinds.
Bit dry at 22% humidity, not real keen on that, I like it over 75% grin

A tad over 10 here this morning at 7, think I might have to upgrade the old mercury instrument for a flash new digital know it all to the . one so I can compare humidity etc. I know the RH was/is low though as the old lips start to sting and form scales and my Winnie Blue Rolly's get a bit harsh on the throat if left open.
Makes for some Beautiful day's though huh ?

I just drove up from NSW through western QLD over the weekend...no surprises that the first rain we hit was 1700km's into the trip about 1km out of Tully..

My 17 year old son also experienced his first ever household fireplace fire after a couple of 7c NSW nights last week...it was my first one in 25 years as well..I also cut up a load of Ironbark for my oldies and was a bit embarrassed that I had to teach my son how to use a handheld blocksplitter..poor bugga had no clue..!

Looks pretty damp over the Featherbeds right now.

I saw a home made splitter once where the bloke hooked 2 hoses up to the hydraulics of his tractor to drive a 2 foot ram in a frame setup made up of RSJ offcuts.
One push on the lever handle and bingo, a stack of firewood in 10 minutes.

That would take the fun out of it Hickory...I hadn't realised how much I missed the whole process of cutting the logs up in the paddock ,splitting them, loading them on the ute and then stacking them up ready for the fire....

Ron ,We had a slow combustion stove when I was a teenager so I spent a bit of time on the chainsaw and splitter too...when I saw my son trying to use the splitter ..it got me thinking about how different his life is these days to what my upbringing was growing up around farms....bit sad to think how much time he wastes on social media.....I do try and teach him some basic skills but he see's it as me trying to exploit him for free labour.....ungrateful sod..lol..

Fluctuating between drizzle and sun today..looks like the pattern for the week ahead..
