New topic to discuss the games over the next 11 days.

We have basketball in Townsville over next week, hoping to get to a game or two.

Question for those who watched the opening ceremony (i was at work), who sung the national anthem? been trying to find a video.

Yer was trying to find one for you but there's not much out there due to licensing requirements I'd imagine.
From memory it was just a choir, but the main focus was on all the different cameos from people singing it from around the state...

IMO it was a fantastic ceremony - best Ive seen since Sydney Olympics imo....

I'm heading up there on Sunday - looking frwd to checking out several sports.

The opening ceremony wasn't bad. No where near as good as Sydney but we wouldn't expect it to be. lol

The opening skit with the "surfers" that was pretty cringeworthy.

The hip-hop singer at the start was out of place in what was happening at the time, and his lyrics were indiscernible.

saw plenty of mixed reviews about the ceremony, saw a video of the national anthem, thought they did a great job with that. great idea to have people from all over the state involved in it.

Yeah we couldn't understand him. Jaryd Bleijie reckons the anthem was pre-recorded

Great result for Australia in the marathons this morning: 3 gold, 2 silver & 1 bronze.

However I really do feel for Scottish runner Callum Hawkins, who collapsed just 2km from home whilst in a commanding lead. I could tell he was in trouble before his first fall, as he was weaving all over the road and his rhythm was gone. He managed to get back up and struggled on for a few more hundred metres, but it was pretty obvious that soon after the second fall (on the bridge) he wouldn't be able to get back up and that his race was over. There's been criticism over the alleged slow medical response, but apparently at first he didn't want any, as it would mean he would be disqualified. In the end he was taken to hospital and thankfully from what I've heard seems to be in a good condition. What do others think about this? He was lying on the road for about a minute and a half before medical attention arrived. Should they have gotten there earlier, or was their response appropriate? I'm not sure myself. They can't have medics everywhere along the course, but maybe after his first fall they should have had someone ready to go immediately if he fell again. It's a shame it happened. It was distressing to watch and overshadowed what was a great day for Australia in the marathon events.

A minute and a half? Serious? I guess if there is a camera staring at him for the whole time it may seem like an eternity, but that IS a quick response in my book. Maybe a little different if it was an indoor or field sport though?

My wife and daughter scored tickets to the sport my daughter does and thoroughly enjoyed them.
