I have a new car thermometer record for April:

OH has now hit 35.0, the Airport 36.8, maybe a bit more to go.

The change has reached Bellambi, a little before 2:00PM. Only about 12-13 knots.

Yeah but getting stronger now to the south - gusting over 20 knots in Kiama and temp steadily dropping - coastal areas south now are low 20's. Expect arrival of stratocu soon.

The change is just arriving here. It's getting quite blowy.

OH maxed at 35.4, smashing the old April record of 34.2 set in 2016 and the first ever 35 recorded there in April. The Airport finished at 36.8, also over a degree above its old record.

Records seem to be mainly on the coast, places normally affected by sea breezes. Inland locations like Bankstown, Richmond and Camden, finished a degree or two short of their records.

The SE change came through here at about 14:55, the temps are gradually dropping from about 34, winds are what I'd call moderate, ie around 30kmh.

Yep, and quite emphatically so.
Will be interesting to see how much of that heat comes over here by the end of the week.
No records locally here today.

Yeah it was always bound to fall sooner or later. And not really surprising that it did so in a period of unusually long lived heat in inland areas. Speaking of which, Bathurst has another 30C on the list for the month, the 5th one. It's also averaging 29.9C so far.

Two of the Bathurst Ag 30s earlier in the month turn out to be suspect - it seems the maximum thermometer wasn't reset.

Before today if someone told me they thought 40 was a possibility in Sydney area in April, I would have told em to get there head read. But now, given that even hotter air from WA and SA might arrive Friday, I think 40 could happen in Sydney somewhere.
P.s Adelaide broke a record at West Terrace site. Records back into the 1800 hundreds

The BOM doesn't think it'll get any higher than 34C.

Knot were you Canberra's Weather in a previous life?

Interesting note there Blair - re the Ag Station.

Also several days fell agonisingly short of the magic 30 degree mark, 2 @ 29.6 and 1 @ 29.5 smile

Agreed mate.
I too, was surprised at how weak the April records were. I suppose this just goes to show what an unprecedented heatwave this is for April.
I've also wondered today whether the repositioning of the AWS at OH played any part in today's record being broken so easily. I suspect that it had little to do with it as the wind regime was primarily westerly so the old station would have been just as exposed to the hot temps. There wasn't even a hint of a sea breeze all day.

I'm not going to mention the unmentionable, but I find it really concerning how many heat records are constantly being broken these days.

When was the last time we broke a cold record? A record low monthly average temperature, a record coldest day etc......

All the records these days just seem to be heat related.

Sydney OH hasn't recorded a below av month since 2011 I think Homer.
You are right. It is a one way street as far as records go.
Could be the unmentionable. Could also be recovery from a cold period that takes centuries. Hard to know given how short records are.

Is Obs Hill using the new site yet? If so, today is particularly impressive as the comparison showed the new site to be cooler in westerly winds than the old one.

No, the old site is still the 'primary' site.
