Hello Fellow Weather Fanatics:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE......HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
June..13..90F/32.2C..75F/23.8C..---
......14..87F/30.5C..74F/23.3C..---
......15..88F/31.1C..66F/18.8C..---
......16..88F/31.1C..71F/21.6C..0.20"/5mm
......17..91F/32.7C..71F/21.6C..---
......18..88F/31.1C..74F/23.3C..---
......19..91F/32.7C..71F/21.6C..0.05"/1.2mm

Overall, quite a warm and sticky week (last full week of Spring). The raintotals were from heating-type showers; the total on the 16th was aided by a stationary front washing-out to our north and the rain on the 19th (no rain in forecast) was from a cell which formed right over town and--on radar--appeared to be moving from east-to-west (opposite of normal). Some of the days had a good deal of clouds in the sky, but this did little to abate the warm/humid conditions (lower-elevation locales had maximums in the mid-to-upper 90sF/35-37C). The showers were refreshing as they happened, but when the sun popped out afterwards, it was more miserable than before. Needless to say, I tried to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the days. BTW--as of the 19th--Mena's avg. max. for the date is 86F/30C with avg. min. of 65F/18.3C; sunrise on the date was 6:04AM with an 8:32PM sunset. It looks like the final death toll from the flash flood which hit Camp Albert Pike (extreme SW Montgomery County) will stand at 20 (sadly, about half that number were children).
We're starting to get into the time of the year where most days are "carbon-copies" of each other, without too much variation in maximum/minimum temperatures.
Today is the Fathers' Day holiday in the US and tomorrow (Monday the 21st) is the beginning of Summer in the NH (I'll hate it as the daylight will slowly be decreasing here, but that'll be good news for your Aussies/Kiwis).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for much the same with warm/muggy mornings and hot afternoons (temperatures similar--or maximums just a tad warmer--to this past week) with very minimal shower chances.

Wishing ALL a Mighty Fine Week~~~Wet Snow

Warm (& Muggy) Greetin's Folks:
Here's a little perspective:

The final death toll from the (June 11) flash flood at Camp Albert Pike (extreme SW Montgomery County) will stand at 20.

According to Arkansas Climatology Highlights, the last time that many folks perished in a weather event in Arkansas was on March 1, 1997 when 25 perished statewide in a tornado outbreak. The last time that many folks perished in one location in Arkansas was on May 15, 1968 when a twister devastated Jonesboro (Craighead County), killing 34 in the town (44 dead statewide).
So--as you can see--it's been quite a while since Arkansas has experienced such a deadly weather event. (Arkansas went from the 1968 event [see above] to the 1997 event [see above] without having double-digit twister fatalities.)

Kind Wishes~~~Wet Snow

We've been seeing the news from the floods over here, just incredible rain rates. The camping group really had no warning. With everything else that has gone on recently, aka BP debacle or the Oklahoma floods, you guys are in it up to your necks. Such a tragedy that rocks whole communities.

Late June Greetings Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE......HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
June..20..92F/33.3C..73F/22.7C..---
......21..93F/33.8C..72F/22.2C..---

......26..92F/33.3C..73F/22.7C..---

A fairly warm, muggy & completely dry week--only the 3rd dry week of the year. Summer in the NH officially arrived on the 21st and it really does feel like it as Heat Indexes have been flirting with the 100F/37.7C-mark. Again, a number of the days had the typical fair-weather cumulus clouds, but these offered little relief. Just missed some T-showers on the 24th as a stationary front was near my area. The shower cells to the west and south gave quite a bit of cloudcover, but as the cell motion was (more-or-less) east-to-west, all I got was to hear some thunder rumbles and enjoy some cooler outflow breezes. I suspect that if the hotter and dry conditions continue, the County Judge will put Polk County under a countywide burnban before too long. As I've said before, I do like the warmer temperatures, but the humidity really saps my energy. I finally put the rainguage--on the 22nd--up at my new house (atop a board in my front yard) but have yet to record anything in it.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for very good T-shower chances on Monday as a front approaches with slightly cooler--but just as muggy--temperatures. Could use some rain as the flowerbed is starting to need some wet relief.

Wishing ALL An Amazing Week~~~Wet Snow
P.S. I've seen where Phoenix, AZ hit 113F/45C earlier in the week.

Hi Wet Snow, like the look of those temps, although I don't think I could cope with the high humidity.

Warm here as well, temps in the mid 70's with plenty of sunshine.

When was the last time Mena reached 40C/104F?

PS, best wishes for a happy July 4th weekend coming up.

Folks:

It's 6:09AM Tuesday here. Around 4AM, a line of heavy T-showers hit. I was woken by extremely loud/close thunder. For the next hour or so, the extremely close lightning and very, very loud thunder were relentless (I can't remember it being like this--for so long a time--in a long time). Some lightning flashes illuminated my bedroom. The power went off just after 4AM and only came back on near 6AM (which doesn't happen that often here). I've copped an inch/25mm rain in that time as well. Hopefully, we won't have such scary lightning for a while.

This week was noticeably cooler than the previous one; thanks to a very late-season Canadian cold front which was strong enough to pass through in the early AM hours of the 29th (bringing very close lightning/very loud thunder for an hour straight). The cooler conditions and lower humidities along with pleasant NE breezes made the rest of the week quite refreshing. Rain on the 3rd was from the northward-moving remnants of what was ex-hurricane Alex (my area was on the eastern edge of the shower activity; the showers [and day] felt tropical as there was no thunder/lightning with the rainfall, but with very little wind). The rain was good to see as it had been fairly dry for a while.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for more warm & muggy conditions with a daily risk (20-40% chance) of more T-shower activity (as another cold front will approach the area).
It's 3:32PM on Sunday the 4th of July here and we have muggy conditions with temperatures not far short of 90F/32C.

Wishing ALL an Awesome Week~~~Wet Snow

This week was fairly muggy with frequent showers and a fair amount of cloudcover. Showers on 5th & 7th were of the daytime-heating variety (moist atmosphere from the last couple of stalled fronts). A Pacific cold front which became stationary gave the rain on the 9th & 10th. It was thought that the remnants of Tropical Storm #2 (TS2) would drift northward and interact with the front (a "double-whammy") and giving heavy (enhanced) rainfall totals. This didn't happen as the remnants of TS2 continued drifting westwards through Southern & Central Texas (causing flooding rainfalls in those areas). Often the showers were brief and giving way to p/c skies and sunshine, making it more unbearably muggy than it was before.
Kind of a strange Summer so far: The warmest (thus far) maximum (94F/34.4C on June 22, 23 & 24) was barely into Summer (arrived on the 21st) and Mena has failed to reach a maximum of at least 90F/32.2C since June 28th--almost 2 weeks ago! That said, the Heat Indexes have been well above 90F+/32.2C+. (I've also copped 3"/76.2mm rain since June 28th). Oh well--this time of year--I'm Very Thankful for all the wet relief that we do get. At least the somewhat cooler temperatures make it a bit more pleasant for yardwork, and I like to take long walks through the neighborhood.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued warm & muggy conditions with fair chances (20-30% or so) for showers, especially early-week.

Wishing ALL a Most Pleasant Week~~~Wet Snow

Greetin's Friends:

Well, after nearly 3 weeks of warmish and mostly cloudy & showery weather, the heat and clear skies returned today (Thursday the 15th) as we finally had our 1st 90F+/32.2C+ maximum of the month (KENA reported the temperature at 5:40PM as 92F/33.3C; by this time last year, we'd already had 10 days in July with tops of 90F+/32.2C+). Mena had gone 17 straight days with tops below 90F (including a maximum of only 79F/26.1C on the 3rd).
The cooler temperatures and showers were nice, but--humidity notwithstanding--I do like HOT summers.

Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Mena's tops should be well into the 90sF--with Heat Indexes over 100F/38C+--for the next number of days.

This week was much warmer than the previous one--especially from the 15th onwards. After a cooler spell to start Summer, the heat & mostly-sunny skies returned on the 15th. Rain for the week was mostly due to heating thundershowers (enhanced by Low-pressure to our south). Heat Indexes for the week were a bit above 100F/38C+. Again, a number of the days started out cloudy, giving way to partly-cloudy to mostly-sunny skies by the early PM hours. A number of locations in Arkansas were near 100F/38C for maximums for the week. We were again in the "do-nut hole" on the 16th: Persistent T-showers just to the East of Mena (moving slightly SE) commenced about 5PM and dropped heavy rain; around 8PM, T-shower cells were just to the West of Mena (moving N-S). All I got was some cooling outflow breezes, but I did get a good light show while sitting outside just after 8PM (from the Easterly cells). Mena finally caught the edge of a T-shower cell (moving NW-SE) just before dawn on the 17th. I do like the heat, but the humidity made it pretty tough for any yardwork/outdoor activity until the later evening hours--any cloudcover provided little relief. Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued hot weather (high Heat Indexes) with not much in the way of shower chances.

Wishing All a Most Relaxing Week~~~Wet Snow

Yet another hot, muggy--and totally dry--week. Heat Index readings were in excess of 100F/38C+. Again, some of the mornings started out cloudy, giving way to partly cloudy/mostly sunny skies in the late AM or early PM hours. The early mornings and late evenings are the best (coolest) times for any outdoor chores. Again, any breezes or PM cloudcover only offered brief relief. Otherwise, it was a typical Summer week here. Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued hot and humid conditions with fair chances for T-showers throughout the week (especially early-week as a cold front approaches and the remnants of a Tropical Depression are to our south. We could do with some rain as it's getting fairly dry here). For this period--July 18-24--Mena's average maximum is 90F/32.2C, with average minimum of 68F/20C.

Wishing ALL a Mighty Fine Week~~~Wet Snow

Early August Greetings Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE......HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
July..25..96F/35.5C..72F/22.2C..0.90"/22.8mm

This week had "tropical-like" showers the first half with more heat and humidity with dry conditions the latter half. The combination of a cold front to our north and the remnants of Tropical Depression Bonnie to our south caused the spotty shower activity early-week (the last few cold fronts approaching Arkansas have either washed-out near my area or retreated NE as a warm front). Most of the showers hit us from the south--which is an unusual direction for us. The rain made things cooler while it was happening, but when the sun popped back out, it was more humid and sticky than before. My area (& much of Arkansas) continues to be in a Heat Advisory (started the 29th-at least this coming Monday) as Heat Index values will be between 105-110F/40.5-43.3C (some spots in Arkansas may have Heat Indexes above 110F/43.3C+). Mena had their hottest day of the year with that top of 97F/36.1C on the 31st (Leola, in Grant County, saw 104F/40C for a maximum). I am enjoying the warmth (minus the humidity) as much as I can, as it'll get cooler soon enough. As the dome of High pressure has a firm grip over our area, the forecast for the upcoming week calls for continued hot & mostly dry conditions (with more elevated Heat Indexes). For this past week--July 25-31: Mena's avg. max. is 91F/32.7C with avg. min. of 67.7F/19.8C.

Wishing ALL A Most Excellent Week~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Congrats to Aussie golfer Stuart Appleby for shooting a 59 (only the 5th-ever 59 on the PGA Tour) today at The Greenbrier tournament in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Hello Again Weather Friends:
Looks like it's fixing to get Really Hot here:

It's just after 9:15AM Monday here (and already 82F/27.7C). Just heard on KENA that Mena's forecasted maximum for today (and Tuesday) is 104F/40C (with Heat Index values around 108F/42.2C), which would be Mena's hottest temperature since August 31 & September 3 in 2000 (also 104F/40C). I can only imagine if we--at our higher elevation--do get that hot, how much hotter some of the lower-elevation towns in Arkansas will get!

Aaaaahhhhh, the Good Ol' Summertime~~~Wet Snow

Folks:

Well, Mena did hit 101F/38.3C for a maximum yesterday (Monday). Among the regular reporting stations in Arkansas, the "hot spots"--all hitting 107F/41.6C--were Fort Smith (Sebastian County; which tied the Record High for the Date, set in 1896), Leola (Grant County) and Eudora (Chicot County). Even the RAWS at Compton (Newton County; elevation 2,365FT/721M ASL) topped out at 100F/37.7C. I expect quite a few spots had Heat Indexes of 110F+/43.3C+ and more-of-the-same is expected for today (Tuesday, now 1:53PM). At 12:12PM today, KENA reported Mena's temperature at 95F/35C.

Kind Wishes~~~Wet (& HOT) Snow
